World Human Rights Day Statement

1

The human rights are an intrinsic part of our daily existence. They are the principles that are keeping us alive and in the future they will be our purpose when we start to work as doctors. However there isn’t a single day that passes in which we don’t take them for granted and unfortunately we don’t realize how privileged we are compared to the majority of the world’s population: 21 million are modern day slaves1, 783 million people do not have access to clean water2, almost 2.5 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation3, an estimated 10 million are stateless4 and 22,200 children under 5 years die each day due to poverty5. The list of underprivileged people is never-ending and the net effect is always to decrease the quality of life and increase the amount of global health problems. Often the cause of these problems is the belief that human life can be sacrificed for the upholding of an ideal. Conflicts occur because people are obstinate or narrow minded, unable to co-exist with someone who appears physically differently or behaves culturally different to the majority, or because they use a belief as an excuse to exploit others or dominate others based on political ideologies, cultural beliefs, religion, gender and gender identity, orientation, race or ability. As IFMSA we believe that a medical student is not training to become any doctor, but that he or she is training to become a good doctor. A good doctor

treats their patient with respect and dignity. The level of care for the patient will not be affected by who they are. A human being will always remain a human being in whatevercircumstance and the diversity of the human race just helps break the monotony of ourprofession. If we lose this value then we lose the very reason we are enrolled in the course.

By adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the international community has taken on itself to ensure that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood, and today after more than six decades we IFMSA members want to express that we reaffirm and repeat our commitment to promoting, protecting and insuring its fundamental principles and values being acted upon through our actions and education worldwide.

Turning this vision into a reality requires both the persistent protection of such rights, increasing the awareness that they are fundamentally ours and giving space for active participation as global citizens. Setting aside a day to commemorate, educate and reflect on the principles that form the UDHR means celebrating the rights we exercise everyday as human beings, and acknowledging that enjoying those rights carries with it the responsibility of promoting these rights for all people.

For the past 31 years our Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace does not just celebrate this event but it acts upon the principles that lead to the creation of the UDHR

throughout the entire year. Our actions depend on the target groups but whatever the project organised we are directly or indirectly contributing to the reinforcement of the UDHR in the community. On this special day I invite members worldwide to join in our efforts to promote the UDHR and to continue working on SCORP projects throughout the year. The World Human Rights Day League of Extraordinary SCORPions has created this manual as an easy to use tool to guide you in activities that can be organized at the local and national level to commemorate this special day.

Messages from the League ofExtraordinary SCORPions

The moment we believe that we are all born free and equal, understand it and respect it, this is the moment we will find human rights covering the whole world. It’s a beautiful dream we all have and share but only dreaming is not enough. Stand for human rights not only in one day but make it a daily change in your attitude and make a real change. Only then the dream can be true and find everyone enjoying their rights and respecting the others’ rights.

Mohamed SHOUMAN, IFMSA-Egypt.

Favourite Human Right: We are all born free and equal. That’s the main reason I joined SCORP & started working on Human Rights.

me very sad. This still affects a significant part of the world. I strongly believe an honest day’s work should result in an honest day’s pay. So my message to you, is keep up the good work keeping the issue of human rights at the fore, and only collectively we can make promote a world that is fairer and equal.

Favourite Human Right: #4: No one should be subjected to slavery or servitude. The idea of slavery and servitude in the 21st century makes

Waiken CHEN, MMSA-Malta.

Favourite Human Right: Right to Education; it has been said “Knowledge is power.” This is especially true when it comes to Human Rights. Education gives an equal platform from which we can advocate and demand for our rights. My dream is of a fairer world, a peaceful world. That is why I joined SCORP. The policy makers did their job in passing the Human Rights Declaration. It now remains for us to raise awareness and implement this declaration. This is why I celebrate the World Human Rights Day…in the hope I will reach others with the message of their rights and together we will reach even more people and make an informed world aware of its rights. Then will we truly achieve a free and fair world!

Sally MACHIARA, IFMSA-Kenya.

Favourite Human Right: Equality For all. I want to request you all to not ask, for once, what other human beings can do for you-ask what you can do for them,

for humanity. I believe pretty words alone can’t change the world and things that don’t change go extinct. I believe that every human being deserves to be lifted out of shadows of vice, hatred and disapproval and I for once not only want to be a spectator, but to be the change. Remember “anyone might be us and any day might be today.” So let’s join hands, raise our voice and be heard!

Favourite Human Right: hard to say, but I would choose Right to Education. I think a good and public Education is the basis for development of every society. It’s hard to

explain to people that they should respect and defend Human Rights, their freedom, their equality and their justice if they haven’t been taught about that. As we say in my Local Committee “No puedo cambiar el mundo, pero sí mi micromundo” which means “I can’t change the world, but I can change my microworld.” Let’s work towards that!

Paco Lopez Pinero, IFMSA-Spain.

Favourite human right: NO discrimination, I believe that everyone has to be treated equally no matter his colour, race, gender, social class or even disability.

Khogali Elfaki OSMAN,MedSIN-Sudan.

Favourite Human Right: Everyone has their own worth as being hum an. Although people are so different like different race, different thought, different mindset or

different in their ability, everyone can stand in the Earth as a human being. So the message from me is please respect each other because we are all the same as humans. We each want peace, happiness and standing like one human the same as you.

Patcharida MAHATCHARIYAPONG, IFMSA-Thailand.

Favourite Human Right: Definitely hard to decide since they are all connected and necessary to human beings all around the world without expectations. They are the application of the humanity of the true human nature. This is why I joined SCORP in the first place. The loss act of humanity that is the main reason we are suffering from these violations around the world against our rights which is supposed to be not given but rather not taken from us. Humanity is part of us all. Losing it as person and especially as a doctor is a crime to yourself and the humans you will be rather treating. You will be fixing them like a mechanic fixes a cold engine. It’s a dream, but a reachable one if we all believe and stand for the base of our rights; our humanity! “To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.”

Lubna AL-ABDALLAT, IFMSA-Jordan.

Favourite Human Right: Definitely #28. A fair and free world It is not only right of a single person, it is right for all of us, for the entire world. In a fair and free world, every

other human right can be achieved and observed. We can do this together. Not only on this date, 10th of December. Every time we have a chance to fight for human rights, we have to do it, because giving up is not our style. We have one goal, one dream and we will achieve it no matter what – a world full of fairness, freedom, tolerance and human rights. Spread the green!

SCORPion Mobilisation

Tag every project, action, photo, or activity with our awesome World Human Rights Day 2014 hashtag: #privilegehumanity. Let’s spread it around the world!

Why did we choose this hashtag for the campaign? Whoever you are and whether you like it or not, we are all essentially human beings. We are all people with a beating heart of emotions, with dreams and aspirations, capable of thinking and deciding, living and reaching our potential through our talents and decisions on a daily basis. We are all people who have the privilege to be called ‘human beings’ and with this title of ‘human beings’ we are all able to exercise... our rights and freedoms with the moral responsibility to respect the others and fight the belief that some groups of people are inferior to others. We need to be the human allies that ensure the boundaries are respected. We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past generations and we cannot contribute to the vicious cycle of society in labelling and marginalising fellow human beings.

What is your privilege? Your rights, human rights, they aren’t just a piece of paper written years ago. They are alive the same way you are alive. They are a intrinsically part of you, whether you know that or not, and that’s how important and beautiful your rights are. They are your own privilege in this life on this earth!! so let’s break the silence, spread

the word and spread the green!

Public OutreachT-shirts – For any activity to be carried out remember the colour that defines our Standing Committee: Green. Wear your SCORP shirts, any green shirt you have, or create green ribbons for those who don’t have.

Facebook Profile Picture – With the favour of our friends from TurkMSIC we are happy to present you http://hrd.turkmsic.net/ where you can modify your Facebook profile picture according to WHRD2014 and contribute for propagation also in this way.

Flash mob – Follow the tutorial which we prepared for you via this link. Observe the moves, the music chosen, the purpose (to catch attention in public spaces another choice: SCORP workshops) and logistical tips on how to organise one. Submit videos to [email protected] and [email protected] who will create a joint video showing various scenes from the numerous participating countries.

Choose your right song:Use a fast rhythm song to have the feeling of energy. Tone of the song can increase the feeling of participation. The song should be a well-known one. The proposed song in the tutorial is “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen.

Choreograph the dance steps:Show and raise your hands up. Make sure to keep it synchronized so that people who pass by will easily notice what you are doing.

6

Recruit people:Tell them the details and objectives of our campaign including the benefits of joining the activity.

Let’s Dance:If there are 10-15 people in your group, you can teach them how to dance directly. But if there are many people who want to join your flash mob, divide your team into groups and appoint each group a leader to teach the dance steps. Practice privately first before you go public!! Make sure you’re all set for the day of the event!

What to prepare aheda of time?Confirm permission to use the place and put loud music in that area (preferably a written consent by the owners if it is a private space or the authorities/city council if it is a public space).

After conducting the flash mob and catching peoples’ attention, have material prepared to promote our message. These may include:

Giving people brochures which contain human rights information: fundamental human rights, important people, or issues involved in human rights and peace.Displaying a poster, piece of paper containing a motto, or short message which can grab interest.Taking a team photoAsking for evaluationOptional – but if it not too difficult to do – we recommend holding a small session talking about the human rights issue in society or the reason we should raise awareness on this day. This is to inspire

the members joining the flash mob dancing to get a better understanding of the impact of the project they are involved in. We may invite an external speaker or another relevant individual that would be appropriate to work with your team.

These are some suggestions for what you can do with our poster:

Post it on your Facebook timeline, SCORP fan-page, or your NMO website in celebration of WHRD.

Print the poster out on A2 paper (420 X 594 mm) and stick it on walls or windows of crowded places. For example in a cafeteria, elevator, your university bulletin board or even on your dormitory door. Any place that people pass by qualifies.

Make a series of important violation issues in your country including this poster as the head of the series followed by the violation cases. Let’s say you prepare 7 issues that you want people to consider. On 3rd December you will post this poster and the following day you will post the first issue. The next day you post another issue and so on until 10th December. It would be great to encourage people to express their opinion as a comment on the post so we can gather peoples’ opinion on each issue.

Activities for the Younger Generations This year we wanted to encourage SCORPions to organise activities that target children so they can grow up with a positive view on what human rights are. If you want to target children at school it is important to contact the school administration as early as possible. Otherwise try to attract children at the public outreach event you are already organising. Here are the

activities we recommend:

The Drawing TreeWhere: Go to a school in your city or to a children’s hospital. Remember to ask for permission early otherwise go to a public place where you expect children to be present like a playground if the weather is good.Materials:

Wall or a surface (white sheets) where you can create the tree;Big brown pieces of paper (or cartons);Sheets of papers of different colours (to make different leaves colours);Scissors, glue or another sticky substance to attach the tree trunk and leaves to creating surface;Colored pencils;Extra: pictures about the human rights to show as examples for the children;Camera to take pictures;

Preparation:Cut the brown paper or board to make the tree trunk and colored sheets to make leaves;Paint some examples earlier (or print them) so the tree will not be empty from the beginning

How to proceed with children:Tell them something about human rights;Ask them to paint something concerning a human right; or to write the name of each human right on a sheet; or to write or draw what human rights they have; Encourage them to be as creative as possible. Cheer on their imagination and beautiful creations

Wall full of handsMaterials:

Cards or pictures;Face paint and big white sheet OR many board pens and a white board;Extra: balloons – preferably green

How to do it: This is a game or like a fun test. You tell the kids about the 30 human rights. Write one word on each card that can give a hint about one of the 30 rights and show it to the kids If a child guesses it correctly have him or her make a print of their hand or thumb on the white sheet and write the word under it. If you have balloons you can give one as a prize for each correct answer. Foster their curiosity and excitement to know their rights!

Tales about Human Rights for children and novels/movies for young adultsA) Novels / Movies You can pick a novel that discusses a human right issue and start reading it from 1st of December until the 29th of December. Afterward organize a debate or discussion about the book and the right included in it. Similarly you can choose a movie with a human right themed issue and organize a grand movie night with popcorn. Here is a list to choose from:

World Human Rights Day 2014 ReportsIn order to keep track of the developments in our Standing Committee it is important to document the progress we are making. For this reason we are once again going to be collecting your success stories and uploading them onto the SCORP Database like we did last year. The reports are to be filled in by National Officers on Human Rights and Peace or National Projects Coordinators only. Here are some easy steps to follow to accomplish this task: Access the event report here. Fill it in and submit it to [email protected] before the 29th December The reports will all be uploaded on the 30th December. Check out last year’s reports here. This year we are hoping to have more reports filled in and uploaded to keep sharing the work and accomplishments of the SCORPions worldwide. Once they are uploaded in the section ‘2014’ they will be linked to the national pages inside the Database and help enhance the national profile of the participating NMO.
