1. As a part of the Chamber’s workforce development efforts, the Chamber in collaboration with Union County Public Schools and South Piedmont Community College, hosted the first Earn It in Union County Job Fair. The job fair connected graduating high school seniors and members of the public with businesses open job positions. In addition to networking and learning about available job opportunities, attendees had the opportunity to have their resume reviewed by members of the Union County Human Resources Association.

2. Women In Business (WIB), initiated in 2012 grew membership by 10% in 2016. This dynamic program continues to provide leadership development, networking opportunities, referrals, and meaningful information specifically for women. In addition to the quarterly luncheons, the WIB Steering Committee also hosted a professional development event called, Develop Your Professional Swag. This evening event featured three dynamic women speakers followed by a panel discussion.

3. As part of the Public Policy program, the Union County Chamber:• Hosted a Public Policy Luncheon to inform members about the “Connect NC” bond referendum. This $2 billion bond package

was an investment in the state’s university system, community colleges, state parks, National Guard, and numerous water and sewer systems. The bond package included funds for South Piedmont Community College, UNC-Charlotte, and our local agriculture community. The Chamber worked locally with South Piedmont Community College and UNC-Charlotte for passage.

• Hosted a Public Policy luncheon in April featuring Union County Manager Cindy Coto to provide a “State of Union County” to Chamber members and guests.

• Hosted a Public Policy luncheon in September featuring members of the Union County Delegation from Raleigh. State representatives Dean Arp, Craig Horn, Mark Brody, and State Senator Tommy Tucker gave updates from the 2016 legislative session and provided insight to upcoming legislative issues affecting Union County businesses.

4. As part of the Shop Union County program, the Union County Chamber:• Grew the Lunch Mob program to introduce Chamber members to restaurant members throughout Union County. The

Chamber invites members to the local eatery—no formal program or agenda, and the restaurant provides a discount to the attendees. It is an informal way to network with other members and to support a local Chamber restaurant member.

• Hosted the Union County Business Expo. This year, the Chamber chose to hold a traditional business expo instead of the back-to-school expo of recent years. Over 52 exhibitors participated representing a variety of business segments. In addition to business exhibitors, South Piedmont Community College, SCORE, and Union County were represented to provide educational materials for business owners.

5. The Chamber grew the new Young Professionals of Union County (YPUC) program, which now has over 110 members and is only in its first year. This program held its initial kickoff event in November, 2015. This new program provides professional development, opportunities to network with other young professionals, mentoring, and a community service component. In 2016, there were quarterly luncheons, networking events, and informal socials. In addition, YPUC volunteers held two community service events.

6. The Chamber’s Environmental Health and Safety Roundtable was formed to meet the specific needs of EHS professionals in Union County, its purpose to provide opportunities for networking, benchmarking, and sharing best practices. The group includes EHS professionals from leading industry, healthcare, and government. The EHS Roundtable also hosts quarterly breakfast events to share information with the business community, focusing on small and mid-sized businesses. In 2016, the EHS Breakfast events included information about OSHA audits, the STAR and SHARP Safety Programs, the National Safety Council, and a panel discussion featuring EHS professionals from Charlotte Pipe and Foundry – Plastics Division, Goulston Technologies, RSC Chemical Solutions, and Union Power Cooperative.

7. In an ongoing effort to offer value to Chamber-member businesses, the Chamber introduced a new affinity program in collaboration with FSI Office/AOPD. This program offers deep discounts to members of the Chamber and supports a local Chamber-member office supply company. Discounts are offered to all members including the smallest businesses.

8. In 2016, the membership growth of your Chamber reached an historic high with over 630 member businesses and organizations, representing over 24,000 employees.

The foundation of a strong community is a healthy business community. We are fortunate in Union County to have a diverse, vibrant business community consisting of small and large retail/service businesses, a varied agri-business community with deep historical significance, and a manufacturing concentra-tion other communities envy. A prosperous business community provides jobs for our residents, a tax base to build and maintain our infrastructure, income to support our quality of life through contributions to our nonprofits, and support of our educational institutions.

The foundation of a healthy business community is a dynamic Chamber of Commerce. YOUR Chamber is the cornerstone of the business community providing opportunities to connect with others, providing professional and personal development opportunities, collaborating with community partners to meet the challenges businesses face, advocating on behalf of our members, and acting as a primary resource for our members. The work of the Chamber is crucial to the success of our members, and ultimately to the success of our community.

This year was a great success! In 2016 your Chamber implemented new programs, enhanced existing programs, and created even more opportunities for our members to “make connections” throughout the year. Membership in your Chamber grew to a historic level this year, attendance at our events continued to grow; members utilized the Chamber as a resource for their business, and grew their businesses leveraging the connections made through the Chamber.

We continue to solidify the Chamber’s role as “The Business Connection in Union County”. We provide solutions to the common challenges all businesses face and differentiate our services based on the business segments we serve. We achieve this by doing what we do best—making connections.

This was a great year for YOUR Chamber and our members. Yet as I look to the future, I am confident the best is yet to come.

Wishing you the very best,

Pat KahlePresidentUnion County Chamber of Commerce

2016 Programs & EventsAs a first-year member, it has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the Union County Chamber of Commerce. As a small business owner, it is refreshing to be affiliated with a group that is so passionate about growing and developing businesses within the chamber. Not only have I seen the direct impact to my business, but the biggest return I have gained as a member of the Union County Chamber of Commerce has been my expanded network. I have been fortunate enough to be a part of other chambers before but never have I seen such a more dedicated staff that is always working to create new ways to help chamber members grown and become engaged in the community. The programming the chamber provides creates an opportunity to each business to get involved at a level they are comfortable with and also has subset groups like the “Young Professionals of Union County” and “Women in Business” that help round out a robust offering for chamber members. This chamber is defiantly doing something different here in Union County and I am proud to be a member and I will continue to be a member as long as they will have me. Marcus A. Each year the first Friday in October is designated as National Manufacturing Day. For the third year, the Union County Chamber of Commerce facilitated a week-long celebration of manufacturing in Union County under the brand, Make It in Union County.

The purpose of the week’s activities was:to increase awareness of the positive benefits of manufacturing in our community, to promote manufacturing as a top career choice, and to thank manufacturers in Union County for the jobs they create, the taxes they pay to support the infrastructure of our county, and the thousands of volunteer hours and dollars they contribute to local charitable organizations.

The Chamber reached out to community partners and manufacturers to create a Manufacturing Awareness Task Force. The Task Force was led by the Chamber and included representatives from Union County Public Schools, South Piedmont Community College, and local marketing experts. The communications plan included a significant presence on social media, constant updates to the Make It in Union County website, speakers in area high schools, field trips to local manufacturing facilities, and various communication methods directed to students in the area high schools

Union County Public School Guidance Counselors and Career Development Coordinators toured Charlotte Pipe and Foundry – Plastics Division and Scott Safety prior to the big event to learn about manufacturing and about the activities to be held during Manufacturing Awareness Week.

Speakers from various manufacturers across the county spoke to local high schools reaching over 1,500 students and educators. Almost 200 students toured seven manufacturing facilities. Over 200 students, parents, educators, and members of the community attended tours of five manufacturing facilities.

A Manufacturing Showcase Event was held at South Piedmont Community College with over 20 table top exhibits featuring local manufacturers, Union County Public Schools and South Piedmont Community College. Students could use a welding simulator, see 3-D printing at work, use marshmallow shooters made of pvc pipe, see videos about manufacturing processes, and talk with leaders from local manufacturers.

The week’s activities culminated in a Manufacturing Celebration Breakfast attended by over 125 manufacturing executives and community leaders. This year’s keynote speaker was NC Apprenticeship Council Chairman Roger Collins (Siemens Energy) who spoke about apprenticeships, workforce development and the needs of the manufacturing community.

During Manufacturing Awareness Week 2016, over 2500 people were reached through the schools, speakers, tours, field trips, open house events, manufacturing showcase, and the breakfast event. Even more received information through Make It in Union County’s website and various social media sites.

An important business segment to our community is small, locally-owned businesses. These businesses are the backbone of our community and your Chamber. In 2016, the Chamber focused on enhancing our services offered to small business owners throughout Union County.

The purpose of this initiative is:

• To increase awareness of the importance of supporting locally-owned businesses and keeping sales tax revenue in Union County to support the infrastructure of our county

• To promote Chamber-member small businesses• To provide support and access to resources for small business owners• To thank small business owners for their investment in our community, the jobs they create, the taxes they pay that support

the infrastructure of our community, and the thousands of volunteer hours and dollars they contribute to local nonprofits.

The Chamber recognized small businesses during National Small Business Week (May 1-7, 2016) with significant presence on the Chamber’s social media sites. In addition, small business owners were invited to a Small Business Breakfast Event to hear from Success Coach James Pagano. James provided specific strategies small business owners can use to help them work “on” their business instead of “in” their business.

The Chamber celebrated Small Business Saturday (November 26, 2016) with a significant presence on the Chamber’s social media sites for over two weeks leading up to the big day. The Chamber hosted a social media contest with a prize for shoppers who patronized locally-owned Chamber-member small businesses. In addition, the Chamber team visited small business members throughout the county delivering Small Business Saturday marketing supplies in advance of the event.

The Chamber announced plans to create a Small Business Roundtable to meet the needs of small business owners throughout Union County. The Roundtable will provide opportunities to network with other small business owners, benchmark, and share best practices. In addition, this group will provide feedback to the Chamber to ensure the Chamber is meeting the needs of its small business members.

In 2017, the Chamber plans to roll out a new Small Business Initiative called, Small Business Spotlight. Each week the Chamber will feature a small business Chamber-member in a video on its website and social media sites.
