Case study of a developed city: Glasgow Look at why the site and situation of Glasgow is

important

Recap on the different urban zones

Focus on changes in the inner city and suburbs

Case study of a developing city: Mumbai Housing and traffic in Mumbai – problems and

solutions

You need to be able to compare the problems in Glasgow and Mumbai and evaluate the successes of the solutions in both

Site and Situation

Think back to S3 and 4.

What are site and situation?

Site: The characteristics of the actual point at which a settlement is located and that would have been of major importance in the initial establishment of that settlement and it’s subsequent growth

Situation: refers to the location of a settlement relative to it’s surroundings (other settlements, rivers, communication lines, relief etc.)

Group Task

Collect a satellite image of Glasgow, an OS map and an atlas.

Why do you think that this site was chosen for Glasgow?

Use the 3 sources to help you discuss the question in your groups.

You need to be able to identify reasons as well as give reasons for them

Hint: look at maps showing relief, natural resources and main transport routes

Some ideas to get you started

Supply of fresh water found in a river valley or near the source of a stream

Flat land is easy to build on, room for expansion and fertile soils are ideal for farming

Close to a source of fuel e.g. coal, wood

Dry points where the land is firm and dry (unlikely to flood)

Defensive site providing protection from potential enemies e.g. high point, in a meander

Copy them into you jotter next to the correct feature from the list below:

Raw materials River Clyde

Homework

You need to be able to account for the site and situation of a named city. Use your notes to answer the following question:

For a named city you have studied, explain the ways in which its site and situation have contributed to its growth.
