Discussion leaders
• Choose a chapter from HCI Remixed. Present:– HCI remixed chapter– Chapter referenced by HCI Remixed– One contemporary/related paper (follow-up work, or a
paper from the chapter author)
• Choose topics today
• Present 3 possible readings (and why) one week before class– I can help with next week
How to do it well
• Provide context– Who are the authors?– What other work have they done?– Pull in related research, work before and after
• Use slides, videos, etc. as appropriate
• Prepare concrete discussion questions
Other tips

Memex, the “memory extender” (1945)
• Concept sketch for augmenting human capability
The owner of the memex, let us say, is interested in the origin and properties of the bow and arrow. [...] He has dozens of possibly pertinent books and articles in his memex. First he runs through an encyclopedia, finds an interesting but sketchy article, leaves it projected. Next, in a history, he finds another pertinent item, and ties the two together. Thus he goes, building a trail of many items. Occasionally he inserts a comment of his own, either linking it into the main trail or joining it by a side trail to a particular item. […]
As We May Think
• Burning questions?
As We May Think
• What was the impact of the Memex?
As We May Think
• What did he get right? What did he get wrong?
As We May Think
• Where are we now with respect to the memex? What is left?
Two papers
