Conductor: Mark Elder Piano: Francesco Piemontesi

WEBER: Overture Oberon BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No.5 WAGNER: Lohengrin Preludes Act I and III WAGNER: Die Meistersinger Suite

The concert opens with Weber’s magical overture, Oberon, before the exceptionally expressive pianist, Francesco Piemontesi, performs Beethoven’s ‘emperor of a concerto’. Then we hear two contrasting preludes from Lohengrin – the first, serene, and the second, energetic. In a glorious climax, Sir Mark guides us through the intimacy and ceremony of Wagner’s great comic masterpiece, Die Meistersinger.

The Planets by Holst had its first performance one hundred years ago in 1918. Vaughan Williams’ ‘Pastoral Symphony’ was written during the war but not performed until 1921. Our spoken narrative reflects on the approaching end of the war from a Hull perspective using images and sounds with pre-recorded contributions from John and Jane Godber.

The Serenade to Music was written for Sir Henry Wood’s Jubilee in 1938, 80 years ago. Sir Henry was conductor of our orchestra for 16 years from 1923 to 1939.
