Welcome to your June edition of your Hucclecote Link. It’s a month for celebrations this month...we are celebrating our 5 years of publishing the Hucclecote Link, so a big thank you goes out to everyone who helps to keep this local business alive, that includes the businesses that advertise in the magazine, my team of distributors who get the magazines through your door and to you the reader for using the businesses in the magazine and so helping to keep them in business. During the past couple of years where we have constantly been surrounded by doom and gloom about the economy in the local / national papers, I would like to think we are proof that actual-ly these hard times have shown that people do value local businesses and do use them, which will all go towards doing our bit to help our local economy. If you have enjoyed receiving your Hucclecote Link over recent years and have used some of the businesses that are in the magazine, perhaps you could forward me a few words about what it is you like about the magazine or some comments about the businesses you have used in the magazine. Maybe there is some-thing that you would like us to feature in future editions of the magazine, we are always interested to hear your views and comments so please just drop me a line (my address in at the bottom of the index on page 34) or email me at : [email protected] All comments received by 30th June will go into a draw and the winner will receive 2 tickets to Cineworld. This month also see the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, giving us all an extra bank holiday...how will you be spending yours? If you are still looking for ideas over that weekend, The Hucclecote Community Association are hosting a Diamond Jubilee Celebra-tion Event on Saturday 3rd June from 1.30pm with a parade from Hillview school followed by activities in King George V playing fields, all are welcome and there’s no admission charge.
www.twitter.com/@Sarah_Gerken - we would love to connect with you - perhaps you know of another event happening over the Diamond Jubilee, if so feel free to post it on our Face book page. Congratulations goes to Mrs E White for winning last months Sudoku competition.
competition is on page 27. Have a great month Sarah.

Dave’s top tips
I often get asked, “Where can I source my materials or even get some design ideas”? Maybe you are looking at some options for an upcoming bathroom-remodeling project. The reply is usually to source the basic materials locally from a few of the big chain stores so if you should under order, then obtaining a few more tiles or fixings becomes less hassle. However the information about differing designs and options to your pro-ject can be limited by the experience of the staff that, “will be able to give advice on their own products”, but may have limited knowledge in other brands or available op-tions to your project. With this in mind, and after the huge success of the “Dave’s top tips” editorial over the past years I have decided to help bridge the gap somewhat. I have created a website at www.dstevens999.co.uk with information not only about us, but also with a host of online tips including some very informative and humorous video tutorials. Along with allowing advertisers on the sidebars you should see some content aware advertising from other companies. For example, if you are reading a page about bath-rooms, then you should see adverts displaying baths or taps. You may not get an ex-act match at these early days, but expect things to become more streamlined as the site is used. We hope you enjoy using the site and find its content useful and informative and do keep coming back as new tutorials and tips are being added frequently. Regards
Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you.
Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee how ever that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Ladders account for more than a quarter of all falls from
height with, on average, 12 people a year dying from the
fall and over 1200 suffering major injuries.
If you have to use a ladder around your home, prevent such a fall from happening by
following these hints and tips:
climb with your arms straight and your body upright.
Do not lean away from the ladder or stretch in such a way that your centre of gravity it out-side the line of the ladder. Keep yourself positioned so that your belt buckle (navel) re-mains between the uprights.
Make sure that the ladder is in good repair. Ladders should be regularly checked to ensure they are in a safe and workable condition. If you spot any defects, the ladder should be taken out of use immediately and replaced. Use a ladder that is long enough for the task to avoid excessive reaching and make sure you place the ladder at a safe angle (75°). Use the 1 in 4 rule, ie place the base 1 unit out for every 4 units up. Use the top 4 rungs of a ladder as hand-holds only. If you try to stand on them and grab something like a gutter for support then you may fall. Fit a stand-off to the top of a ladder and hold it away from overhanging eaves to allow you to work on the gutters. On soft ground stand a ladder on a board to stop it sinking, screw batten to the board to prevent ladder from sliding outwards and tie/stake it. If a ladder is in one position for a lengthy job, tie it to sturdy pegs driven into the ground on each side of uprights to prevent it slipping. Never climb a ladder with your hands full – instead raise and lower tools and other items in a well balanced bucket tied to a length of rope. Finally carry out the ‘3 Rung Ladder Test’ – with the ladder set up, climb 3 rungs and jump up and down, then lean out to each side to check that it won’t settle.
Remember, ladders should only be used for low risk, short duration work.
Don’t take risks - if you are in any doubt call Bright Sparks on 01452 521112.
We will be happy to provide a free, no-obligation quotations and NO job is too small.

April meeting of Hucclecote TG gave us an insight into the workings of Riding for the Disabled, when Mo Begg, Centre Manager for the Cotswold Group, came to talk to us and to receive a donation from TG, collected through the year. Mo explained how by chance she applied for the job as manager of the centre based at Cheltenham Racecourse- a complete change from her previous career and it was obvious how enthusiastic she is about her job and the centre. The Cotswold branch of Riding for the Disabled was founded in 1965 and at first the ponies were borrowed, for half days at a time, then with some money from The Jackie Bruitton Fund , the group now has 14 ponies, living in field shelters, looked after by volun-teers, and they provide 200 rides/week. The ponies are very well trained before they give rides, and there is a hoist for wheelchair bound riders, which they have to get accustomed to also. The riders have Physiotherapy advice about stretching exercises on horseback to help with posture and balance. There are awards given for the young volunteers, and young riders and adult riders for progress, also proficiency and endeavour awards, so a lot of encouragement for riders and volunteers to improve. There are also riding holidays in Wales twice a year, and a proposal to build an extension of a ‘warm room’ and extra seating, these plans being dependent on donations as the charity receives no Government or official funding. The June meeting of Hucclecote TG will take place at Hucclecote Community Centre on 21st of June at 7-30 pm when we will be visited again by an old friend- Mrs. Susan Marshfield, who will tell us how “ Strange Things do Happen”! All members and visitors are very welcome.
Hucclecote Horticultural Society
Our 2012 plant sale is on Sunday 3rd June as part of the Jubilee celebration event on the King George V playing field. Come along and support us, and other groups taking part, and pick up some bargains by way of plants and garden equipment. Our June meeting – on the 28th - is all about Bonsai – Vanessa Watson will be taking us through the ins and outs of growing and manicuring these tiny trees, which in shape and col-ouring are just like their much bigger brothers. We saw some recently at a flower show, and they were truly amazing – looking at a photograph with the right background it would be impossible to work out that it was a 1 foot not a 100 foot tree that was in the picture. June will also see the Society visiting Wisley, the home of the RHS - again a great opportuni-ty for us to pick up hints and tips, as well of course as a few plants. On 26th July we will be having a visit from Alan Harvey, whose topic will be Cacti and Suc-culents – probably those colourful and ornate ones that we can grow in our own conservato-ries, rather than the giants we used to see in the John Wayne films. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694.
