Configuring NTP multicast mode
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is an
application layer protocol in the TCP/IP
protocol suite. It is used to synchronize
the time among a set of distributed time
servers and clients.
As network topologies become
increasingly complex, clock
synchronization becomes more important
for devices on the entire network. If a
system clock is modified manually by
network administrators, the workload is
heavy and the modification is error-
prone, which affects clock precision. NTP
can solve this problem. There are several
NTP operating modes to perform time
synchronization, but NTP multicast mode
is useful when there are large numbers of
clients distributed in a network.
A simple network scenario is shown in the
picture.
We will assume that RouterA is locked to
a radio clock primary source; we will
show how to configure RouterA as NTP
multicast server and RouterB/RouterC as
NTP multicast clients.
