WHAT IS HUA PARAKORE ABOUT? WHAT IS THE HUA PARAKORE PROCESS? HOW WILL HUA PARAKORE AND THE RESEARCH BE PROTECTED?
Mauri Rangatiratanga Oritetanga Wairua Tikanga Whanau Karakia Kaitiaki Matauranga Tinana
Our kaupapa is to look at mahinga kai and some
of nga tikanga and kawa around mahinga kai.
We work to establish a kaupapa Maori framework
for Maori agriculture that can be used by whanau,
hapu, iwi and growers to identify and market healthy
Maori kai. It can also be used to further develop our
agricultural base in an environmentally sustainable
and healthy way.
The research asks the question, what is Hua Parakore?
That is, what constitutes pure or organic Maori kai?
“All matters concerning intellectual property that arise
during the project will be referred to the Roopu Taumata
for guidance. All knowledge in this project remains
the taonga of the participants. The original tape and
copies of the transcribed interviews are all taonga and
will be returned to participants.
In regards to the Maori Organic Standard that will be
developed at the conclusion of this project, Te Waka
Kai Ora, being the primary research collaborator in this
project, will be kaitiaki for the Maori organic standard,
on behalf of all Maori growers in New Zealand.
The implementation of intellectual property protection
mechanisms will be discussed with the two Advisory
bodies, Roopu Taumata and End User Group, who
will provide guidance and advice on appropriate
intellectual property measures.
- extract from IP Plan, Hua Parakore FRST Research Contract
From this process the research team will identify key themes and draft a kaupapa Maori framework for Hua Parakore. Confi rmation of this draft will be sought from the Roopu Taumata and End User Advisory groups and pathways for implementation of this framework by Maori growers will also be identifi ed. Once completed the research results will be disseminated by the research team, as agreed by the End User Advisory Group and Roopu Taumata.
