SecureCare 1 is is the premier provider of the Emergency Push Button Service in StatenIsland. SecureCare 1 has partnered with the JCC to make available the Push Button andother vital services to those who want to continue living independently and safely intheir own homes. We know that 35% of those over age 65 will fall in their homes at least once a year.

The consequences of such a fall are often serious and long-lasting. If you live alone orare home alone part of the time, the Push Button Service (also called a medical alert, emergency response, PERS system) can ensure that help will be on its way in minutes. SecureCare 1 clients know that in addition to helping in an emergency, we are there forthem at all other times as well. The SecureCare 1 concept started in Israel but its unique model has universal appeal

and now serves seniors in Amsterdam, Berlin and Tokyo. Here in the USA, if you live inthe NY/NJ metropolitan area, we can install the Push Button Service in your home. You’ve already joined the JCC family--now join the SecureCare 1 family and play it

chai life volunteer program

Why should you volunteer? The answer generally can be answered in one of two ways: You might want to become involved in productive and meaningfulactivities or volunteering may be something that responds to aninterest you may have. Sometimes both of these answers can betrue.

There is a two-fold benefit to volunteering: the organizations gain valuable talents fromindividuals who share their expertise, talent and time, and the individual gains a feeling ofsatisfaction and pride in giving back and making a difference. This exchange is a win for both.Getting up in the morning and helping someone else is a very special thing to do. It really makesyou feel great. The little things that you might think are easy can make such a difference inanother person’s day.The JCC is establishing a database for volunteer opportunities within our agency and through-out the Staten Island community. Projects are either short term or long term. What a wonderfulway to meet new people, share your talents and gain some new ones.

Are You...• A retired adult who wants to share your expertise?• A mother or father with child-free time who wishes to reconnect with the work force?• A volunteer who is willing to donate your artistic or other talent?• An individual with sports background who is willing to serve as a coach?• A High School student performing Community Service?• A College student needing an internship during your school break?• An individual who wants to work on an intergenerational program?• An individual who would like to be a docent at one of our wonderful cultural events?

DocentsWe have a wonderful group of adults who are the friendly faces who welcome you as youarrive at the J.

Take the Next Step...We have many varied opportunities. Call Orit and she will be happy to help you find the Volunteer position that meets your needs.

Remember that the gift of time and energy is a wonderful way to spend part of a day.

Family FitnessProviding fitness programs for families andchildren is a step toward overcoming teenobesity and the tendency to live a sedentarylifestyle in our society. Changing exercisehabits should be a family effort. Parents havethe power to model healthy behavior for theirchildren. Our classes create an exercise ex-perience for parents to enjoy with their youngchildren and teens which gives parents an op-portunity to set a good example for their chil-dren. Instead of setting the standard that asedentary lifestyle is normal it ingrains in chil-dren that exercising is normal. Exercising to-gether brings families together providingthem opportunity to have meaningful con-versations. It facilitates bonding between par-ents and their teens. We have chosen a variety of fitness classes

including Yoga, Kickboxing, Bootcamp andZUMBA. These are all challenging, yet non-weight bearing and appropriate for all ages. With a fusion of Latin and international musicalong with dance themes that create a dy-namic and exciting atmosphere-ZUMBA is theall time favorite.

ssPersonal TrainingFunctional training is a classification of exer-cise which involves training the body for theactivities performed in daily life. Functionaltraining has its origins in rehabilitation. Phys-ical therapists developed exercises that mim-icked what patients did at home or work inorder to return to their lives or jobs after aninjury or surgery. Thus, if a patient's job re-quired repeatedly heavy lifting; rehabilitationwould be targeted towards heavy lifting, if thepatient were a parent of young children, itwould be targeted towards moderate liftingand endurance; if the patient were amarathon runner, training would be targetedtowards re-building endurance.Functional training involves mainly weight

bearing activities targeted at core muscles ofthe abdomen and lower back. It attempts toadapt or develop exercises which allow indi-viduals to perform the activities of daily lifemore easily and without injuries.Functional training may lead to better mus-

cular balance and joint stability, possibly de-creasing the number of injuries sustained inan individual's performance in a sport. Thebenefits may arise from the use of trainingthat emphasizes the body's natural ability tomove in three anatomical planes of motion. Incomparison, though machines can often besafer to use, they restrict movements to a sin-gle plane of motion, which is an unnaturalform of movement for the body and may po-tentially lead to faulty movement patterns orinjury.Ask one of our personal trainers to show

you some functional exercises!

Fit to a T SeminarDo you know your blood pressure? cholesterol level? weight? T-score?

That's right, T-score. If you had to thinktwice about what a T-score is - and no, it's nota golf term - chances are you are not alone. "Fit to a T" is the USBJD's (US Bone & JointDecade) response to the Surgeon General'sfirst-ever report on bone health andosteoporosis. In partnership with the PublicLibrary Association and the National Networkof Libraries of Medicine this education pro-gram is called "Fit to a T" because the T-scoreis the measure of a person's bone density andsusceptibility to fragility fracture.Osteoporosis is the most prevalent bone

condition among Americans with nearly onein two women, and one in four men, likely tosuffer from it in their lifetime. Osteoporosis isdebilitating, reducing a person's freedom ofmovement, and leads to high incidences of hipand spine fractures. Prevention education isessential to lowering the burden of disease. Although relevant and applicable to people ofall ages, the program is especially aimed atmen and women in the mid-40s to late 60s,as well as people who are highly susceptibleto osteoporotic fractures or have experienceda break. The goal is to reach people beforethey have a fracture, so they can take neces-sary steps to prevent bone disease and makechanges in their lives to alter the course ofthe condition.Tuesday, October 19, 7:00pm FREE

Holistic Wellness Program an Eastern and Western Approach to Body, Mind and SpiritA 6 week series A doorway to vitality In this series we will approach the body from both Eastern systems and modern Western sys-tems in addressing the proper use of the body in movement for sports and daily life. Througha synthesis of practices drawing from yoga, qi gong, performance enhancement techniquesand bio-energetics we will start our exploration of deeper body awareness and increasing vi-tality.Developing an awareness of the subtle energy (bio-electric energy, chi, prana) is key to cre-

ating lasting health, wellness, healing injuries and preventing injuries through proper move-ment in both sports and daily life. The ancient Greeks called it the kinesthetic body, the ancientTaoists the immortal body, the Yogis the pranic body and the Romans the vital body... learn tofeel it!It is repetitive stressful movements that cause harm instead of healing the physical body andit is the mis-use of our breath that creates disease in the body. When we can use our vital energy (chi) to move with us we increase our energy instead of

burning up energy. Learn the necessary tools for increasing awareness, with the ultimate goal of creating last-

ing health, wellness, vitality, energy, peace, and strength. Did You know that Qi Gong can create as much oxygenation and circulation in the body as

running.... while only standing!• Prevent Injury • Learn Pain Free Movement • Healing Stretches• Increased Energy • Increased Immunity • Restoration Practices• Reverse Aging • Build Strength • Build AwarenessFor more information contact the Sports and Wellness Desk 718.475.5210

Job Training and Job Placement ProgramUnderstanding a job seeker’s skills, abilitiesand interests is often the first step. The JCCthrough the ARRA (American Recovery andReinvestment Act) has recently employedspecialists who work to understand a jobseeker’s abilities, aspirations and prior expe-rience. We can help design an individualizedtraining plan that promotes the job seeker’spersonal and professional growth.By enrolling into our job readiness trainingprogram you will learn the "dos and don'ts"of the workplace – How do I dress for success? What do employers really expect of me? Howcan I stay positive and be dependable? Howcan I get along with others at work? Job seekers also learn how to write resumesand search for jobs as they continue to de-velop their educational needs that give themthe confidence they need to advance.
