In a nut shell! Aborigines are believed to have first discovered the Macadamia Nut on Bauple Mountain around 30,000 years ago, and called it the Baphal nut. The Mountain became a sacred place and the tree and nut part of their traditions and food. The first recorded history was 1858 when the nut was discovered by British botanists who named the genus macadamia. The nut is the only indigenous native export from Australia. Wild trees over one hundred years old are believed to still grow on Mount Bauple. A conservation collection of the original trees at Inman Road at Tiaro opposite the Recreation Reserve is under the care of the Fraser Coast Regional Council and aims to protect their genetic diversity.
DID you know? The Mary River is home to platypus and some of Australia’s rarest species including the:
Mary River Turtle - Found only in the Mary River, it is Australia’s second most endangered freshwater turtle. In the 60s and 70s it was sold in pet shops as a “penny turtle” and was only formally described as a new genus and species in 1994.
Australian Lungfish – This ancient fish or “living fossil” is only found naturally in the Mary River and nearby Burnett River systems. This ‘vulnerable’ species can wriggle over ground and can live for more than 100 years. It makes a small bellowing sound when it surfaces every 30 to 60 minutes for a breath.
Mary River Cod – This large cod is one of Australia’s most endangered fish. Natural populations are now only found in the Mary River system.

Bauple, Gundiah and GlenwoodBaupleFollow the tourist drive from the Bruce Highway to Bauple and BaupleMountainwhere the famous Bauple Nut or Macadamia Nut, as it is known around the world, was first discovered. Stunning MountBaupleNationalPark is currently closed to the public, but is accessible for scentific study.
Explore the history of the area at the BaupleMuseum. Operated by the Mt Bauple and District Historical Society, is open seven days from 9am to 4pm and is set within extensive gardens with picnic tables and free BBQs. Exhibits include old photographs, family histories, war records, a rare coin collection and antiques and collectables. Three examples of original ungrafted Macadamia Nut trees are located across from the Museum.
Go nuts at Macadamia House and experience all things Macadamia as well as fabulous pizzas and Sunday brunches. Services at Bauple include a service station, store and post office.
The BaupleCommunityShed at the Bauple Recreation Grounds is a welcome rest area.
GundiahLocated 7 km off the Bruce Highway, Gundiah comes from the aboriginal word for goodbye. It is home to the Prince Alfred Hotel, built in 1896, while the Gundiah Community Place is the centre of community activities. From Gundiah you can return to the Bruce Highway or continue to MunnaCreek, on the Woolooga Road.
GlenwoodThe hub of the Glenwood area is the Glenwood Community Hall and GlenwoodPark, about 1 km off the Bruce Highway from the Arborten Road turnoff. The shady areas bring a variety of wildlife into the park including kangaroos and goannas. Facilities include a service station, a general store, a BBQ area, shelter, playground and sports oval. The Glenwood Lions BotanicalGardens is also a refreshing picnic spot.
Great Sandy Strait and Tuan State ForestTuan State ForestTo the south of the Tiaro area via Glenwood and Anderleigh Road is the TuanStateForest. Kauri Creek is a favourite with fishermen and nature lovers. The estuary supports coastal wetlands of sea grass, mangroves and salt marsh.
