Wehavewatchedhim,overthepastsevenyears,growfromawilling,ifhesi-tant,youngmantoaconfident,talentedanddiligentrabbi—onewithstrengthofcharacterandacompassionthatisdeepandintelligent.

Jasonhasakeenmindandusesitwell—nevertoshowoffandalwaystoclarify.Heisastraightshooter,withoutguileorpretence,butwithclevernessandhumour.

BlossomTemple,Jasonhasusedhisheart,innatecuriosityandsenseoffun,whileremainingaseriousJewwhothinksabout

God,wholearnsTorahandwhohashiseyeonthevulnerable.

Jasonisalwaysworthlisteningto,whetherspeakingtoouryoungfamiliesandchildrenintheReligiousSchool,

preachingtoandteachingadults,orvisitingthesickathomeorinhospital.Infact,Ihavenoticedthatwhenheapproachesthepulpit,allearsareopenandalleyesareonhim.

Jasonisalsoanimpressive,lov-inganddevotedhusbandandfather.Indeed,HillaryRosenbergandnowJasonandHillary’schildren,BenandTalia,havebecomeabelovedpartofHolyBlossomTemple.Wewillmissallfour,knowingthatthetieswillremainstrongbetweenTorontoandTampa,Fla.

Thecongregationtookabraveandboldstandin1936—tomovecon-fidentlyintothefuturewithabuild-ingthathasservedusformorethan70years.We,thecurrentgeneration,havethisverysameobligationtoourchildren,ourgrandchildrenandourchildren’sgrandchildren.Wemustrenewourcongregationanditsphysicalspace.Wemustnowmoveforwardwiththesameboldnessandthesameconfi-denceofourforefathers,andendorseaplanthatcarriesusintothefuture—afuture,withGod’shelp,thatwillbeevenbrighterthanourillustriouspast.

Thestarshavealignedforus.Wehaveunprecedentedfinancialcommit-ments,conditionalontheproject’sgoingahead.WehaveapartnerinTheLeoBaeckSchoolDaySchool,whichhasanurgentneedandwhichisbothawillingandcapablepartnerinthisproject.WehaveadesignbyDiamondandSchmittArchitectsInc.,whichisbreathtakingandtransformative.Wehavealargegroupofvolunteerswhobelieveintheprojectandhaveinvestedthousandsofhourstogetustothispoint,andhavecommittedtocontinuethatinvestmentinordertocompleteaprojectthathasgalvanizedsomanyofthem.Mostimportantly,wehaveaneedtorenewoursynagoguecommunityasourforebearsdid75yearsagoinmakingthecourageousmovetoBathurstStreet.

Overthepastfourmonths,wehavelistenedandlearned.WehavestrivedtohearallpointsofviewontheTemple’srenewal.Wehaveheldthreecongrega-tion-wideTownHallMeetings,whichwereattendedbyverylargenumbers.TwoSpecialBoardMeetingshave

toaffirm,youwillseewehavelistenedcarefullytothosewhohaveexpressedconcernaboutthefinancialrisktothecongregation.

AmeetingoftheMembersofHolyBlossomTemple(the“Congregation”)willtakeplaceonThur. June �1, �007, at 7.30 p.m.,inthePhilipSmithCongregationalHall,HolyBlossomTemple,1950BathurstStreet,Toronto,Ont.,forthefollowingpurpose:Toconsider,andifthoughtadvisable,approvethefollowingresolution:

“Beitresolvedthat:(a) TheBoardofDirectorsofHolyBlossomTempleisauthorizedto:

(i) proceedwiththedetaileddesignspecificationsphaseoftheTemplerenewalproject,onthebasisofthedesignproposalthathasbeendevelopedbyDiamondandSchmittArchitects(includingtheconstructionofanewschoolbuildingandanewcongrega-tionalhall,thereorientationoftheMainSanctuaryandthecreationofanewcentralcommunitygatheringspace),submittedtotheMembersofHolyBlossomTempleforreviewinDecember2006andapprovedbytheBoardofDirectorsonApr.26,2007;and

Ninemonthsago,wekickedoffour150thyearwithaServiceinourSanctuary,fullofpompandceremony,followedbyarollickingoutdoorpartythatattractedhundredsofTemplemembersofallages.Weex-pectourclosingeventtohavethesameemotionalimpactthatweexperiencedlastSeptember—appreciationofourpast,prideinourpresentandanticipa-tionofourfuture.

fifty yearsago,ontheoccasionofHolyBlossom’s100thAnniversary,theTorontoSymphonyOrchestrahonouredtheTemplewithaspecialconcert.InOctober1956,underthedirectionofWalterSusskind,theopeningconcertoftheseasonfeaturedpianistGlennGould.Ahalfcenturylater,theTSOisonceagainhonouringtheTemple.

JoinusontheeveningofSun.June17,2007,atRoyThomsonHall,whentheTSOwillpresentaspecialconcertinhonourofHolyBlossomTemple’s150thAnniversary.Theconcert,precededbyagala

Thesongcontainsphrasesfromtheleft(“Wedon’thavechildrenforunnec-

essarywars”);theright(“There’snopeacewithArabs”);thereligious(“Nofear,Mashiachishere”);thesecular(“Drafteverybody”);

andthehumourous(“Deathtoextrem-ists”).Thechorusisbasedonthebumpersticker“Howmuchcrueltycanweswallow,”whichwascreatedbyanimalrightsactivistsbuthasmanypossibleinterpretations.

Grossmanselectedhip-hopbandHadagNachashtocomposethemusic,

andthesongbecameabighit.Grossmanwasaprominent

proponentofaceasefireduringthefinalweekoflastyear’swarinLebanon.Ironically,hisson(atankcommander)waskilledinthelastambushofthewaraftertheceasefirehadbeenannounced.

GrossmanwasthespeakerattheannualYitzchakRabinme-

morialceremonythispastfall,wherehe

madeanimpassionedpleaonbehalfofpeacenegotiations.

this past march,HolyBlossomTemplerenewedawonderfultradition,asmembersofthe2007ConfirmationclasstraveledtoIsrael.Thiswasthefirsttripofitskindin25years.ThestudentsexperiencedtheexcitementandhistoryofIsrael,andrealizedtheimpactthatIsraelhasonthemasyoungJews.

ThesupportprovidedbyTemplemembershelpedmakethistripapos-sibility.Inthepast10years,congregantshaveestablishedanddonatedtoseveralendowmentfundsrelatedtoyouth,

educationandIsrael.ThesefundsallowustobroadentheexperiencesofourTempleyouthandtoencouragestudentstobecomeknowledgeable

andcapableJewishcitizens.Campisanotherquintessentialexperi-

enceforouryouth.Asthesummerseasonapproaches,ourTemplecommunitylooksaheadtohelpouryoungmembersattendCampGeorge,inParrySound,Ont.,theprimarycampingdestinationforReform

JewsinCanada.OursupportwillhelpyouthspendtheirsummerscreatinglifelongmemoriesandenrichingtheirJewishidentities.Todonatetocampscholarships,pleasecallJaniceFeuer(ext.265),attheTemple.

TheOliveBranchBookAwardwasdesignedtoencourageJewishchildrentoreadJewishbooks.StudentsinGrades3to6haveread,andreadsomemore,andwilldecidewhichbookdeservestheAward.

OurTanachTournamentteamwasthemostsuccessfulteaminthecompe-tition,andwonallthreeroundsofthecity-wideTanachTournament,anoff-

a r e m a r K a b l e c o N g r e g at i o NBut,leavingHolyBlossomTemplealsofillsmewithaprofoundsenseofregret.Ihavespentnearlyeveryday,sincedecidingtotakeapositionelsewhere,acutelyawareofwhatIwillbeleavingbehind.HolyBlossomtrulyisaremarkablecongregation,onewhichhascapturedmyhearteversinceIfirstcamehereasaninternsevenyearsago.

members,youngandold,fillourSanctuaryforSukkot,Pesachorotherholidaycelebra-tions,ondaysthatmanyothershulsare

allbutempty.SundayafterSunday,thatsameSanctuaryisfilledwiththevoicesoftheTempleSingers,whogivetheirtime,talentandpassionceaselessly.AndcountlessmembersshowhowtheycareforourTemple,comingouttodebatethefutureofourcongregationatourrecentTownHallMeetings.

Everymonth,wefillthePhilipSmithCongregationalHallwithahundredortwototsandparents,whowelcomeinShabbatwithjoy,goodfriendsanddeliciousfood.Avastarrayofadulteducationofferings,morelikelytobefoundinanadultstudycentrethanasynagogue,isofferedyearlyandattractsworld-renownedspeakers.Members,withoutrewardorrecognition,visit,

shopandcookforothermembersinneed—peoplewhotheyhavenevermetbefore.IcouldliterallyfillthisBulletinwithstoriesofhowthisTemplemakesmeproud,everydayinwhichIamapartofit.
