It was a real honor to finally be old enough (7th grade) to join the Senior Choir in m y home church. It wasn’t a large choir, but it was a very good choir, as far as church choirs. go. It was exciting to have ‘my own’ choir robe, with my name in it. I felt so ‘grown-up’! (And I have sung in, and/or directed and/or accompa-nied church, school, college and community choirs ~ without exception~ for each of the 44 years since!)

Even as a little 7th grader singing for the first time in the Senior Choir at church, however, the irony was not lost on me: one of the pieces it seemed that the choir sang all the time had as its refrain: “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord. It is a good thing to give thanks until the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, a new song, a new song, a new song!” The piece was so familiar that I had the alto part memorized even before joining the choir. It was a very old song - tired and worn out - that proclaimed that we should sing a NEW song. Didn’t make any sense!

As a youth, hearing the same thing over and over again made it seem old, maybe even trite. But now that I am an adult, it seems different now. There is comfort in hearing familiar things again and again.

We are fast approaching a major holiday season: Thanksgiving, Advent, and then, Christmas. One of the things that we enjoy as we celebrate these holidays is hearing some of the same things over and over again. And eating some of the same foods … how could we think to celebrate Thanksgiving without turkey and pumpkin pie? Unfathomable!

We will undoubtedly hear familiar words again this year in this holiday season. It certainly IS a good thing to give thanks unto our Lord … whether or not we have new music with which to give thanks. We can never say it enough ~ ~ giving thanks to God has to be at the core of our Christian life-style. When we give God thanks, we are acknowledging the Providence of God, and our dependence upon God. We are recognizing that God’s grace is given to us freely, not dependent upon our works, or on how good we are. It is God’s unconditional grace for which we must give thanks!

Saying “thanks” to God is a start. But just saying thanks sometimes seems like no more than merely acknowledging a gift - sort of like signing for a package. What is important is that we LIVE our thanks. As we make our preparations to celebrate “Thanksgiving” in our homes, let us keep in mind that truly being thankful is not rel-egated to an expression of thanks one day of the year. It is an attitude for each day. We are called to “thanks LIVING” not just “thanks GIVING”.

We haven’t got much for which to be thankful? The author of the words quoted above was a pastor during a major outbreak of plague in Europe. He presided over 5,000 funerals in his city, including his wife’s. Sometimes he had over a hundred funer-als in a week! How could he be thankful? How can WE not be thankful?!?

“Community Thanksgiving Sampler”

The pastors of the “Inner-Village” Churches are shar-ing in a Thanksgiving Service for our community called a “Community Thanksgiving Sampler”. all are invited to the First Presbyterian Church (35 state street) at 7 p.m. on monday, November 22nd. The service will include a special time for children, too - - ALL are invited!

The offering of our Community Thanksgiving Service will be split between the Clothing Closet and the Community Food Pantry. We are asking folks to bring FOOD (non-perishable items), and/or ‘WINTER-WEAR’ (hats, mittens, scarves, warm socks, coats, etc.), and/or just plain cash.

A time of fellowship will follow this service.

The Outreach Committee will again be collecting bears and other stuffed animals, both new and like new, during the month of November. They can be put on a designated table in the Fellowship Hall until November 13th and at that time they will be moved to the lounge area on the second floor – outside the elevator. We will have a “blessing of the bears” on

Thanksgiving Sunday (November 28th) and they will be delivered on Monday, November 29th. They will be donated to the women’s prison min-istries in Albion. We appreciate all donations – thank you!

The BUMC Annual Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by the Outreach Committee will be held on Saturday, November 13th in the Fellowship Hall at 5 p.m. There will be a sign-up sheet post-ed on the office window to sign up for a dish to pass. Turkey, stuffing, potatoes & gravy will be pro-vided as well as rolls and drinks. So, please sign up and plan to attend -- lots of food, fellowship and fun. See you there.

The box for Matt’s Coats for Kids will be placed in front of the office window during the month of October and the pick-up date will be November 18th. Did you figure it out? The Canal Churches Consortium (CCC) is a group with members from all four churches that meet monthly as part of Christ’s one body. Their shared purpose is to form small groups that encourage spiritual growth while also forming strong support systems for members of the congregations and people in the community. Open communication and invitations to join together give us so many more possibilities than what we can accomplish alone.

BUMC Music NotesChildren’s Christmas ChoirAll children of our church are invited to learn a song to share with the congre-gation in December. We will sing “Every Little Angel” in church on Dec. 5th or Dec 12th. Practices will be short & sweet (15-20 min) after church on Sundays (first practice Nov 7th)... You will receive a CD & music to practice during the week. Please let Sally or Amy Enderling know that you are interested (so we will have enough CD’s made).

Cantata Choir Rehearsals have already begun for our annual Christmas Cantata. Please join us Wednesdays @ 7:45 in the fellowship hall for rehearsals. We will present “I Hear the Prophet Callin” during the worship service on Sunday, Dec. 19th.

Let's talk about.... sHaRINGSharing is both serving and giving. It's part of our “stewardship.” As

Christians we believe in dedicating what we have to GOD. What do we all have? Time, talent and possessions. The choices we make in sharing our time, talent and possessions measures our faith in Him.

You can share your time by serving as a leader, as a teacher and by participat-ing in church activities. You can share your talents and abilities by singing in the choir, answering the call for workers in any task, from working at the clothing center, to calling on people, to helping with minor building repairs. You can share your possessions by pledging and gifting to our church minis-tries, giving to UMCOR, the food shelf as well as your favorite charities.

A friend told me about a person who went to his Pastor and said, “Give me the task/job that nobody else wants to do.” What a marvelous way of sharing one's time and talent. Are we willing to undertake such a task?

Think about the impact we would have on each other, and on our church ministries if each of us were to say to Rev. Kit: “give me a task that will chal-lenge me, I want to share my time, talents and possessions with my fellow church members/friends for the betterment of Brockport United Methodist Church”.

Dear Members and Friends,

After 9 months our Pledges and Gifts are behind what was budgeted. In recent years our 4th quarter giving has been very good as people brought their pledges up to date and made special gifts during the holiday season. Again we seek your help. We hope you will consider an additional or special gift at this time, so we may start 2011 with a positive fund balance.

Your Finance Committee is currently developing a financial plan for 2011, which will be presented at a Church Conference on November 9th.

stewardship

Soon you will be receiving a Stewardship Letter asking you to make a pledge for our 2011 church programs. It is our hope you will prayerfully consider making the necessary pledges and/or gifts that will allow us to maintain our proposed church programs for next year.

The Pledge Card for 2011 will have a place for you to make a pledge/gift to our Major Repair Fund. You may recall the Trustees decided to budget $10,000 each year for major repairs, rather than having to make special fund raising appeals as major projects arise.

We have a fine history of supporting our church programs and maintaining our church buildings. Let us continue as we serve the Brockport community in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

UMW MITTEN TREE – Collecting mittens and hats to keep them warm. Hang them on the tree in the front entry.

STOCK THE SOCK – Collecting warm socks for men, women, and children. Place them in the big stockings on the stairs.

GIFT ANGEL – Purchase, wrap, and return a gift to help make a local child’s Christmas more merry Pick an “Angel” from the tree and don’t forget to sign it out on the “Angel” sign out sheet by the correct number (#). Return by December 13.

FOOD BASKETS – Collecting non-perishable Food donations to help local families have a nice Christmas dinner and stock their shelves too.

CASH DONATIONS – To help with any of these projects. We will do the shopping!

Please help in any way you can! If you don’t feel you can do it alone, go in together with a friend. Every little bit helps! If you are a family/person who could use some help, don’t hesitate to call the church office at 637-4240.
