In North America a cat resides that is rarely seen. It stocks and hides in daylight, but is very active after dusk when the rabbits and mice are out. What is this astonishing animal? The Bobcat. Hi my name is Bobby the Bobcat and I believe that all Bobcats possess the most interesting hunting ways, out of the ordinary family life, bodies, solitary life and eyesight and hearing. A Bobcat stays close to the ground what is he doing? He’s stalking. (Me). One of my most miraculous skills is the way I hunt and how I hunt. I possess 28 teeth; I’m losing and growing them each day. My daggers (claws) and teeth help me when I seize my prey. The teeth bite, puncture and grip into my victim’s throat, and the daggers hold the body down. The best way to hunt is to prowl. We stalk, that means that we stay low to the ground and then pounce. Our feet possess special pads that help us be quiet when as we stalk. People call us ”patience masters” because we can sit still for a long time, so I look like a short tree and animals just roam by us and then… WE BOUND ( pounce) (about 10 ft away). About 20 to 30% of our attacks are victorious, but for this Bobcat it is 30 out of 30% (just kidding!!!!) . I Bobby the Bobcat, savor a numerous amount of animals such as rabbits, squirrels, rats, fish, mice, beavers, gophers and birds. We even devour white tailed deer, but our favorite food is the Snowshoe Hare. If we do “wolf down” a white tailed deer, we set it aside in our den because we can’t eat all of it! . Did you know that Bobcats snack on over 3,800 rats, 3,200 mice and 700 rabbits a year? If you add all of the animals up it equals: 7700. That’s a vast number! Sometimes we feel so ravenous, we stalk 6 to 10 times a day. Our whole life is spent mostly on hunting, and stocking.

Where's my Snowshoe hare?

Bobita and I are hunting, we just caught snowshoe hare and our mating time is almost up, the female Bobita will give birth soon. I mate with Bobita, she is an amazing female, and she is also exquisite!. Bobita and I mate in February or March, and only mate for 7 days . This is my 3rd year to mate with Bobita, delightful Bobita. I love her! . Bobita and I are only gazed at each and other during mating season. Bobacá (my mom) told me that Bobers (my Dad) cheated on her, she didn’t care. It’s not only males that cheat, it is also the females that cheat. After we mate for 7 days, Bobita travels to her den and waits for 62 days in then has her kittens. The nice thing about being the male is you do not have to play a part in rising up the kittens . The first year we only had one kitten and named him Bobby Jr (my favorite) . The next year we had three kittens and named them: Bobphers, Bobpita and Bobees (Bobita told me.). Bobcats can have a litter one to seven kittens. Unlike some animals kittens are born furry, clumsy and spotted. Kittens become weaned at one month old, that means cut off breast feeding . Our little youngsters, ( Bobphers, Bobpita and Bobees) learn how to hunt at only a few months old. At age eight or nine months Bobphers, Bobpita and Bobees depart on their own. I’ve either heard phony or true stories about the male Bobcat consumption the kittens. I would never do that! Ever!!!! (Their too cute!) . (Bobita is amusing!!)

You can’t see Bobby (me!) sitting in the sun waiting for a Snowshoe hare, (why can’t you see me?) because of my remarkable body. Our coat protects us from famished coyotes and wolves because it blends in with our surroundings. The coat is a reddish, brownish, golden color (tawny), it becomes greyer in the winter. Did you know that a Bobcat is named after its tail? It’s bobbed Bob + cat = Bobcat. The tail it looks like it got cut off, and is about four to seven inches.. Our whole body weighs about 11 to 30 pounds that’s about 3 times bigger then a house cat. We possess a digitigrade foot (it’s located higher on the leg) it’s the opposite of a bear, human, kangaroo and monkey. I will warn you right now that Bobcats are cute and tranquil, but are really vicious. . Bobers (My Dad) told me some hunters thought he looked like a cute kitty…. BAM, my dad roared like a mountain lion, and those hunters sprinted as fast as they could away. (Who knows were they set off to!!!!?) Did you know that Bobcats can sound like mountain lions?.

Bobby the Bobcat hear and peer greatly, Who knew that Bobcats could hear the sliest, petite sound? (I can give my self such good complements!! ). I might possess horrible sense of smell but can glimpse and hear astonishing. The tuffs on the top of my ears help me hear better. The tuffs acts like antennae, with a decoder. Did you know that if you shine a flashlight in my eyes it would reflect? Speaking about my eyes they’re a golden, brown color. My eyes work well at night, like dazzling flashlights seeing through the pitch blackness. If a human can see in a dim light a I can see 6 times dimmer. My mom, Bobacá told me that Bobcats would not be able to live if we did not have our eyesight and hearing because it all connects . Our eyesight and hearing help us hunt , and if we did not hunt as well we would die of starvation, then there would be less Bobcats……that means we will soon be, you know the word (Be gone for ever, only bone remains) that’s why our eyesight and hearing is so important.

Who’s there? I can hear you!

Bobcats mate then set off to their solitary life, alone, alone. I mating with Bobita. I possess my own territory, between 2 to miles or 40 miles, . To establish my territory I scratch trees, spray urine on trees and poop scat (I dig dirt in then put my poop on top of the dirt pile). My territory acquires a few rocky ledges, small caves and hollow trees, we like over hangs and boulder piles. Bobcats, like me mostly reside in the southwest desert, (It’s perfect for hunting!). Did you know that Bobcats live 6 to 8 years? Sometimes Bobcats can live 10 to 32 years? (That usually only happens in captive). Bobacá my mom and Bobers my dad are 5 years old, I’m 3. My mom said that I was born in 2005, how does she know that? Also what is 2005?.

If any thing happens to the bragging Bighorn, then vote for Bobby the Bobcat because of his unbelievable ears that can hear the sliest sound, the marvelous fur that blends in with the rocks and leaves, the immense 2 to 40 miles of square feet of territory, mating for 7 days, and the remarkable pads on the feet that help the Bobby the Bobcat be quiet when hunting. So join me in protest against the Bighorn Sheep. We need a better state animal! VOTE FOR BOBBY THE BOBCAT!!!
