The Nebraska Soybean Board recentlyfunded a soybean trade mission to China,March 19-31, 2010. The purpose of this tripwas to provide farmer leaders a better under-standing of the Chinese economic growth andhow that influences the demand for soybeansand soy products.

China is going to be the growth market forsoybeans for the next decade. They will likelybe the major soybean importer and a smallerimporter of soybean meal because of theircrushing capacity and their demand for edi-

ble oils. However, even a small demand forsoybean meal could be significant forNebraska soybean producers.

While in China, the producers had theopportunity to visit and introduce Nebraskasoybeans to importers, crushers, and endusers in three of the most important import-ing regions in China. During these meetings,the Nebraska soybean producers gave pre-sentations that described the current state of

A University of Minnesota-backed research team hasembarked on a three-year,$500,000 study to determine howchanging landscape in NorthDakota's prairie pothole regionaffects the health of bees andtheir ability to pollinate cropsnationwide.

It's a pressing issue, and notjust because North Dakota'shoney production _ perenniallytops in the nation _ depends onrobust bee colonies.

`Òur bees are in trouble,'' saidMarla Spivak, a professor ofentomology at the University ofMinnesota and the leadresearcher. ``They are in poorhealth nationwide,'' and num-bers have declined sharply.

Many factors have cut deeplyinto bee populations over thepast several years, affecting bothnative bees and honeybees,which are not native to the U.S.The mysterious and widespreadcollapse of colonies _ documentedin a 2007 PBS series ``Silence ofthe Bees'' _ has put at risk near-ly 100 crops that are dependenton bee pollination.

Largely because of changes inland use, ``There aren't enoughflowers for bees, which affectstheir nutrition,'' Spivak said.`Ànd some of the flowers outthere are contaminated with pes-

ticides, which poisons bees andleaves them nutritionally com-promised.''

Bees also have their own dis-eases and parasites, in particu-lar a mite called the Varroadestructor, blamed for wide-spread ``bee colony collapse'' inthe U.S. and elsewhere.

`Ìt lives up to its name,''Spivak said. `Ìt's probably theprimary bee pathogen problem,and it's a double hit because itsucks blood, which weakens thebee, and it transmits virus.''

In the North Dakota study,``we want to look at landscapeeffects on bee nutrition and thefunctioning of its immune sys-tem,'' she said.

Zach Browning, a beekeepernear Jamestown, N.D., and pastpresident of the national bee-keepers association, will providebee colonies to be placed in``resource rich'' and ``resourcepoor'' landscapes, Spivak said.

The richer landscapes willhave an abundance of the flowersthat bees like to forage on, suchas willows, maples and othertrees that provide vital earlyspring protein.

``Then they get a lot from wildmustards and other early bloom-ing flowers,'' she said. `Ìn sum-mer, there's clover and alfalfaand many plants we dismiss asweeds. In the fall, they go to

In October of 2009 and again in Januaryof 2010, groups of Ukrainian farmers cameto Iowa to see what farmers here weredoing for corn and soybean productions. InMarch, Iowa State University ExtensionAgronomist in west-central Iowa MarkLicht traveled to the Ukraine to offer rec-ommendations and learn about crop pro-duction in the foreign country.

Licht, who lives in Carroll with his wifeand two sons, helped coordinate the Iowavisits and said, "They were planning onhaving someone (visit) from the UnitedStates...and were looking for people whohad previously worked with the groupsand that could travel on short notice."

He said, "it was a great opportunity" anddecided to go.

Licht traveled to the Ukraine under theUnited States Agency for InternationalDevelopment (USAID) funded Farmer-to-Farmer program, which provides volun-tary technical assistance to farmers, farmgroups and agribusiness in developing andtransitional countries to promote sustain-able improvements in food processing, pro-duction and marketing.

"They were really interested in soybeanproduction," Licht said. "My farmer hostswere gracious and hospitable. They werevery inquisitive and asked a lot of goodquestions."

While in the Ukraine, Licht visited eightfarms in the central and north-centralpart of the country, an area three to fourtimes the size of Iowa.

He described the landscape as a mix ofprairie and forest not unlike Iowa; furthernorth in the country was more forestedand further south more grassland. Thesoils were productive with high organicmatter, he recalled.

The crop mix includes more cerealgrains such as wheat and barley as well assunflowers and canola. Corn and soybeansare a relatively recent addition to the rota-tion. Some farms Licht visited will beplanting soybeans for the first time thisseason. To a lesser extent farms in theUkraine grow sugar beets, alfalfa andpotatoes, too. Some field peas are grownfor livestock feed, Licht noted.

Farms are, however, fairly specializedLicht said. About half the farms he visitedwere crop farms alone, others had an empha-sis on livestock production and producedcrops to support that primary enterprise.

They were "typically diversified from acrop standpoint," Licht added, as mostused a four to five crop rotation system.

Many farms were left-over collectivesfrom the Soviet era and are investorowned.

Another big difference between theUkraine and the United States is that theUkrainian government has placed a mora-torium on the sale of agricultural land.Even extremely large farms - Licht visitedone that was 370,000 acres, more farm-land than most Iowa counties have - mustrent much of the production acreage.

In one case, a 2,500-acre farm had 300landowners, with each landowner the farmdirector entered into a five to 10 year leaseagreement.

The large farms, Licht continued, arecommercial enterprises and have manage-ment or professional staff includingaccountants, veterinarians and agrono-mists in addition to laborers as well asside enterprises such as oil processing orused equipment sales.

A contrast to Iowa which has, Licht said,"family farms, for the most part, whereowners are growers...and they make deci-sions on the fly.

"In the systems over there, the persondriving the tractor or combine doesn'tmake decisions," Licht explained.

This situation poses challenges for qual-ity control. For example, deciding when todo field work based on conditions becausethe person making the decision is not nec-essarily in the field to observe if the soil ittoo wet or not and the person operating

the equipment doesn't have the authority.One of the bigger challenges Ukrainian

farms face is getting capital to makeequipment and technology purchases.Producers import older, used equipmentfrom Germany, the United States andBrazil.

"Basically what they have is what wehad five years ago," Licht commented.

Their equipment has the capability toapply nutrients at a variable rate butthey aren't necessarily grid sampling,for example.

Farmers have, or can get, technology butcan't utilize it as well because of a deficitin satellite service.

"We have access to many, many moresatellites then they do," stated Licht.

Some of the regulations Ukrainian farm-ers have to contend with pose additionalobstacles.

The government has not banned the useof GMO seed but does require companiesthat sell the seed to be registered.

Many companies hesitate to registerbecause accepted regulations in the U.S.,such as not replanting seed, aren't asenforceable there and they are not willingto assume the risk of technology beingmisused.

Seed types, such as thosewith herbicide and pest protec-tion traits that are virtuallytaken for granted in the UnitedStates, are highly desirable butlittle used in the Ukraine.

Commodity groups, like theIowa Soybean Association orIowa Corn GrowersAssociation, are not as formal-ized in the Ukraine, either.

Something that stood out inLicht's recollection was the con-dition of the roads - not good. Hehas little sympathy left for thepeople in western Iowa who com-plain about their roads, Lichtjoked. In many places in the

Ukraine the roads are in "reallypoor shape" or virtually non-exis-tent.

"This (trip) gave me anopportunity to help a develop-ing country with corn and beanproduction," Licht said.

Many of the topics addressedwith the Ukrainian farmerswere no different from thosedealt with on a day-to-daybasis in Iowa: seeding rate,planting date, planting depth,and so on, though the recom-mendations were a little differ-ent to account for the slightlycolder climate. Licht comparedit to northern Minnesota orsouthern Canada.

Licht commented on the peo-ple he visited, "They reallywant to learn from us.

"We have things to learn fromthem...I liked to do it for betterperspective," Licht added.

The area was chosen in partbecause it already has been thesubject of detailed federal stud-ies of ecosystems, climate changeand land cropping patterns.

The study will be financed by a$500,000 grant from the U.S.Department of Agriculture. JeffPettis of USDA's AgriculturalResearch Service will participatein the study.

In the study's next stage,researchers will follow the beesto California for next February'salmond bloom.

Of the nation's 2.5 million com-mercial bee hives, 1.5 million areput to work pollinating almonds,said Ned ``Chip'' Euliss, a biolo-gist with the U.S. GeologicalSurvey who assembled the studyteam.

Bees get their protein frompollen, and as they collect it theypollinate apples, cranberries,blueberries, melons and muchmore, Euliss said. ``There arecertain crops possible onlybecause of bees,'' includingalmonds.

`Òur food security depends onbees,'' he said. `Ì've seen reportsthat value bees as a $15 billionbenefit annually.''

Euliss is a beekeeper himself,starting about eight years agowhen his wife found a bluebirdbox she had put up filled withbees, and she asked him toremove the intruders.

``The bees found me instead ofme finding the bees,'' Euliss said.

He operates about 400 hivesnow in the Jamestown area.

In addition to their criticalwork as pollinators, NorthDakota bees (and their commer-

cial keepers) produced 34.7 mil-lion pounds of honey in 2009,which was 4 percent below 2008production but still highest inthe nation _ nearly twice second-place South Dakota's 17.8 mil-lion pounds.

USDA figures showed thatCalifornia, which usually com-petes with North Dakota formost honey produced, fell to 11.7million pounds in 2009. Much ofthe drop was blamed on miteinfestations.

``We've always had problemswith mites,'' Euliss said. `Ì don'tremember the good old days.''

Last summer was cool and nota good year for bees, he said, butNorth Dakota still managed tohold onto its title as the tophoney producing state for thesixth year in a row.

Euliss said his experience tellshim that his workers prefer vari-ety.

`Ìt looks like in the landscapesthat have greater diversity offlowers, bees do better,'' he said.

Trucking hives with millions ofbees from North Dakota toCalifornia for the almond croppollination shouldn't be an issue,Spivak said.

`Ègyptians transported beesdown the Nile,'' she said.

She's hoping to demonstratethat with good nutrition here,the honeybees will arrive inCalifornia healthier and betterable to fend off parasites.

``They're important pollina-tors,'' she said. ``Many of ourfruits and vegetables _ a lot ofour diet _ is dependent on beepollination.''

While in North Dakota, theresearchers also plan to surveynative bee abundance and diver-sity. They also play an importantrole in pollination. Around theworld, Spivak said, scientistshave identified about 20,000types of bees.

`Ìt concerns me deeply thatour bees are in trouble andthey're crying out for our help,''she said. `Ànd they are in trou-ble for what we are doing _ theway we grow crops, the way weuse pesticide.''

Beyond their productivity, shesaid, ``they're fascinating crea-tures.''
