Page 9: Http://jodeeluna.wordpress.com/2012/11/04/10024/artroom_window960

Biggest contributions: inheriting a disposition and environmental trigger factors

Family history Obesity Impaired glucose

tolerance

Physical inactivity

Older age Specific ethnicities

cases

High blood pressure

More common in older people

Men and women are at equal risk

Page 11: Http://jodeeluna.wordpress.com/2012/11/04/10024/artroom_window960

Indications:o Increased thirst for

sweetened beverageso Increased urinationo Increased appetiteo Fatigueo Slow-healing infectionso Dry and itchy skino Numbness in hands or

Page 13: Http://jodeeluna.wordpress.com/2012/11/04/10024/artroom_window960

Diagnosis

Mainly done over set of three blood tests

Requires positive result of one test and confirmation by a second positive result on different day

Blood test at routine check-up

Eventually sent to hospital for further testing

Page 14: Http://jodeeluna.wordpress.com/2012/11/04/10024/artroom_window960

How is the Disease Treated?

Treatment has changed

over time due to new technology

Continue with doctors’ visits, dental examinations

and eye examinations

Daily foot inspections

Keep up with current

immunizations
