    Tiger Hill

    "If one does not wake up to see the sunrise at Tiger Hill the tour will remain incomplete". Tiger Hill (2S90 metres, 8482

    feet) is 13 km away from Darjeeling town and commands one of the most spectacular views. It is here that one encounters

    nature at its magnificent best. Four of the world's highest mountains all 8000 metres high towering over us at an incredibly

    close distance present a sight one can never forget. The contrast between Everest and Kanchenjunga is very much

    marked. Kanchenjunga is remarkable for its imposing bulk and massive proportions while Everest soaring above a series

    of valleys and ridges, is more graceful and majestic. Snowy ranges occupy the space between the two. The entire ranges

    of Bhutan, Sikkim and Nepal are visible but the panorama is completely dominated by Kanchenjunga and its neighbouring

    peaks. The changes in the colour of the mountaions as the sun rises, is surely to be noted.

    Senchal Lake

    A scenic place near Tiger Hill. This place has popularly come up as a picnic spot among the tourists. The lake supplies

    drinking water to Darjeeling Town.

    Chowrasta

    Chowrasta in Nepali means a place where four roads meet. The promenade is also popularly known as the "Mall". Situated

    on the upper riedge of the town Chowrasta truly reflects the charm of this hill station. One will invariably find locals relaxing

    on the benches, gossiping and lazing around the square. A walk around the Mall road provides you a panoramic view of

    the glistening Kanchenjunga towering over the rolling mountains. The roads leading to Chowrasta are dotted with glittering

    shops filled with garments, curios & local handicrafts, information centres, studios, cafes and restaurants and also an

    arena for pony rides.

    Dirdham Temple

    Dhirdham temple is modelled on the lines of the famous Pashupatinath temple of Kathmandu and was built In 1939. It is a

    minute's walk from the Darjeeling Railway Station.

    Ava Art Gallery

    A mere two kilometers from Darjeeting town, the Gallery is situated along the National Highway-55 and houses unique artand embroidery works of Mrs. Ava Devi.

    Rock Garden and Ganga Maya Park

    Situated at a distance of about 12 kilometers (approx) from Darjeeling town the garden has been constructed with rocks

    and boulders as the name suggests. One can also visit the Gangamaya park, about two kilometers from the Rode garden.

    The park boasts of a small boating facility and one can enjoy the serene and cool atmosphere of the place.

    Observatory Hill

    Also known to the locals as the "Holy Hill", it is Just a few minutes walk from Chowrasta and is situated on the highest ridge

    of the town. The Mahakal temple atop the hill is a revered place for the locals and visitors will be surprised to find a Hindu

    priest and a Buddhist monk sharing a common altar.

    Japanese temple and the Peace Pagoda

    The Nipponzon Myohoji Buddhist Temple, was set up In 1972. The Peace Pagoda provides the perfect place to rediscover

    the serenity in your life and commands a stunning view of the hills.

    Lloyd's Botanical Garden

    Donated by an English gentleman named Lloyd during the early century, the garden has a rich collection of plants

    collected from across the globe. Located below the Motor Stand, the forty-acre Lloyd Botanical Garden is beautifully

    decorated with laid out terraces, green houses, ponds and walking paths.

    Ghoom Monastery

    Built in 1875 by Lama Sherab Gyatso, this ancient monastery is said to have been blessed by the renowned Tomo Geshe

    Rimpoche of Tibet. The speciality of this monastery is that it contains the statue of the 'Future Coming Buddha' known as

    Maitreye Buddha. The Monastery has also preserved some of the rare handwritten Buddhist manuscripts. You could visit

    the monastery on your return journey to Darjeeling from Tiger Hill.

    Druk Thupten Sangag Choting Monastery (Dali Monastery)

    This monastery a situated at Dali, about 4 kms away from Darjeeling town. This is one of the most famous monasteries

    belonging to the Kargyupa sect. The pioneer of this monastery was Thuksay Rimpoche, who died In 1983 and his

    incarnate is reported to have been born in 1986 at Ladakh. This monastery is the headquarters of Drukchen Rimpoche XII,

    the supreme head of the Kargyupa lineage.

    Tashi Dargyalingh Monastery or the Tamang Ghumba

    The Tamangs are a sub community of the Gorkha / Nepali and mostly belong to the Nyingmapa sect. Established in 1926

    this is one of the oldest monasteries of the community.

    The Mag - Dhog Yolmowa Buddhist Monastery (Aloobari Monastery)

    Situated on the Old Military Road commonly known as the Aloobari road, the Mag-Dhog Yolmowa Buddhist Monastery was

    founded by its, Ven. Sangay Lama, the head priest who originally hailed from Nepal. The construction of the monastery,

    coincided with the beginning of the First World War in 1914. The monastery was therefore named Mag-Dhog or warding off

    the war and is dedicated to the cause of world peace. The statues of Lord Buddha depicting different forms and the statue

    of Padma Sambhava at this religious place are stunning. The paintings on the wall are said to be done with the help of

    herbs and are an amazing work of art. Other interesting features of the monastery are the valuable ancient scriptures lying

    Inside the monastery.

    Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

    The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was set up following the successful ascent of Mount Everest- he highest peak in

    the world by the local hero Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edumund Hillary on 28 1953. The oldest mountaineering

    institute in the country carries out various mountaineering courses every year. Apart from Tenzing. legendary mountaineers

    like Nawang Gombu (the first man to climb Everest twice) and Lattoo Dorjee Sherpa have helped build the reputation of

    this pioneering institute. The institute is presently under the purview of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India and its

    museum is worth a visit.

    Shrubbery Park

    The park has been recently renovated by the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council and is now a major attraction In town. One can

    also witness different cultural programmes organised by the DGHC, Department of Culture and Information every evening.

    The park is situated close to the PNH Zoological Park but tourists are advised to visit the park during the evening.

    Tukvar Tea Estate (Puttabong)

    Tukvar Tea Estate is one of the first commercial tea gardens to be established In the Darjeeling region famous for its tea.

    This estate started operating in the 1850s and used seeds raised in government nurseries. Following the experimental

    stage, commercial production started in 1856 and the estate grew rapidly.

    Tukvar is a village in Darjeeling distnct where the Puttabong Tea Garden is located. The area under tea plantation is 437

    Hectares while the gross area is 892 Hectares. Local taxies can be hired to visit the estate and also to see the

    manufacture of teas on weekdays.

    Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

    Established on 14th August 1958 the zoo was dedicated to the memory of Padmaja Naidu, former Governor of West

    Bengal on the 21st November I975. Considered one of the best zoos in the country, it is the only centre that breeds the

    tibetan wolf in captivity. Breeding programmes for the endangered red panda, snow leopard and the Siberian tiger are also

    carried out at PNHZP. The zoo is open on all days except on Thursdays and other national holidays.

    Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre

    "Our way may be hard and long one, but I believe that the truth and faith must ultimately prevail. - His Holiness the DalaiLama.

    After His Holiness escaped from Tibet, thousands of Tibetan refugees came to reside in India. Darjeeling too became a

    home away from home for the Tibetans in exile. To rehabilitate the community a ten-member committee was formed in

    Darjeeling to organize a rehabilitation centre which was known as Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre'. The centre was

    established on October 1, 1959 and the residents of the centre are today known for their handicrafts. The centre makes

    excellent carpets, woollen goods, woodwork, etc.. which are famous across the globe.
