Injury to Insult: Hurt Iraq War Veteran Angers Oakland Protestors2

JCFHSAPM

According to an article out of the Washington Post, anti-Wall Street protestors showed in full force one day after an Iraq War veteran was critically injured after a clash with police. The story comes from the Associated Press, and describes the veteran’s injuries as serious including a fractured skull.

Police have begun to show force in cities such Oakland and in Atlanta where SWAT was deployed in response to protests. Some areas of Oakland have been deemed off-limits for overnight use, as police attempt to prevent tents and other permanently occupied areas from becoming unsafe or unhealthy.

Despite clashes between Oakland police and protestors, AP reports that, “demonstrators in other cities have built a working relationship with police and city leaders.” It remains to be seen how long such cooperative efforts will last both on the side of the police and protestors.

Libyan Rebels Linked to Execution of Gaddafi Supporters3

JCFHSAPM

Even though there has been an international effort to stem retaliatory attacks in a post-Gaddafi Libya, the BBC reports that more than 50 bodies of Gaddafi supporters have been found in Libya. According to the article, the Gaddafi loyalists were executed at Hotel Mahari in the city of Sirte.

(BBC)

Human Rights Watch have called on Libya's new government to investigate the killings.4

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported that some of the victims had their hands bound signifying their capture/surrender and their subsequent execution about a week ago. An AFP reporter who saw the bodies stated that, “Many of the victims suffered bullet wounds to the head.” This comes amid reports about the graphic accounts of Gaddafi’s capture and death at the hands of Libyan rebels.

According to the BBC, “Libya's new rulers have denied any involvement in abuses and have urged Libyans to forego reprisal attacks.” An investigation into how Gaddafi died is being led by the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC).

An Unofficial List of Occupy Wall Street Demands Surface5

JCFHSAPM

A forum post on the Occupy Wall Street website claims that an unofficial list of demands is floating around and being promoted by Fox News and Mises.org. The list contains 13 demands.

The most notable demands are as follows: “(1) restoration of the living wage...raise the minimum wage to twenty dollars an hr; (2) institute a universal single payer healthcare system; (3) guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment; (4) free college education; (6) one trillion dollars in infrastructure spending now; (9) open borders migration; (11) immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all...And I don't mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period; and (12) outlaw all credit reporting agencies.”

Despite this unofficial list, OccupyWallSt.org claims to not have any official demands. However, some have questioned the protests in general citing a lack of unity and conflicting mission statements from the various protestors interviewed.

Greece in Serious Trouble: Warning Signs Were There6

JCFHSAPM

A New York Times article written by Landon Thomas Jr. and Stephen Castle tell of a draft report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that should have served as a warning for Greece’s impending debt crisis. The report from mid-2009 is said to have underlined the consequences of Athens defaulting on their loan, which at the time seemed unconceivable.

According to the article, Greek officials complained to the IMF, which then redacted some of the harsher conclusions of the report. Thomas Jr. and Castle argue that, “The reversal at the I.M.F. was just one small piece of a broad pattern of denial that helped push Greece to the brink and now threatens to pull the euro apart.”

(AP)At a 2010 meeting in Brussels were, from left, Jean-Claude Trichet, former European Central Bank president; Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany; José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president; Prime Minister George Papandreou of Greece and President Nicolas Sarkozy of France.7

Months after the IMF report, Greek Prime Minister George A. Papandreou’s stated that the previous government was deceptive by disclosing the size of the government’s debt to be only 6% of its economy. It was in fact closer to 12% of Greece’s entire economic output.

As a result, fears of a Greek default, as noted by the IMF report, have grown. In fact, according to the article, “Greece’s problems have worsened so much that they threaten to rip apart the euro and the decade-old 17-country monetary union.” It is uncertain what effects Greece’s debt

crisis will have on the United States. However, if the rollercoaster trading on the stock exchange is any indication, it will not be good.

More Strikes and Protests Amid New Greek Move to

Avoid Default9

JCFHSAPM

According to an article from BBC News, there has been increasing tension between the Greek government and its

citizens. This is amid Greece’s new austerity move to prevent defaulting on the country’s debt.

As a result of the government’s measures, protests and strikes have broken out. This includes a 24-hour public transport strike and air-traffic controllers walking off the job in efforts for workers to retain their full pensions and civil service posts. According to the article, the Greek government has done so in order to receive up to 8 billion euros in much needed aid.

(BBC Video)Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos: "Miracle" in Greeks' hands.10

The moves by the Greek government have not resonated well with Greek’s citizens, despite the government’s intensions to remain in the Eurozone by any means necessary. The BBC reported that the head of the Athens chamber of

commerce and industry, Constantinos Michalos, has implied that the current government has no compass. He later went on to say he was not surprised by the revolts and riots stating, “People are going to revolt for sure - how can you milk a cow when it hasn't been fed?”

Riots in Zambia Stem from Slow Election Results11

JCFHSAPM

The BBC reports that riots have broken out in parts of Zambia, Africa over slow poll results. According to a BBC reporter, “the anger has been prompted by a ban on the media from announcing results not verified by the electoral commission.”

(BBC)Protesters in one part of Kitwe set a market alight.12

the election, as people from the towns of Kitwe and Ndola flooded the streets to throw stones. Reports of a market being set aflame led the police to set up barricades and deploy riot police. The electoral counter center is also under guard.

Tourists Warned to Stay Out of Bangkok13

JCFHSAPM

According to the Daily Mail, parts of Thailand have become a no go zone for tourists following clashes that left 21 dead and over 800 wounded. As a result of the violence, a mass exodus of tourists from Bangkok has occurred.

(AFP/Getty Images)Aftermath: Anti-government protesters gather by an overturned armoured vehicle which was abandoned by soldiers during clashes on Saturday at Democracy Monument in Bangkok.14

This is the latest in a string of reports from around the world on increasing political violence. “Red shirt” protesters have demanded that the Thai parliament be dissolved in favor or new elections. The Daily Mail reports that bullet casings, pools of blood and destroyed military vehicles littered the streets.

Tourists have been advised not to visit the country and to exercise extreme caution if such visits are necessary.

Libyan Rebels as Power-Hungry Terrorists?15

JCFHSAPM

An article out of Russia Today questions the validity of the rebels’

cause. Following a NATO-led intervention in Libya to remove Muammar Gadhafi from power, civilian casualties have increased and many have questioned the need for NATO’s involvement and backing of the Rebels.

Russia Today reports that Salma, a Libyan citizen, spoke of the rebels as terrorists who told her that her daughter would be arrested for being a known Gadhafi supporter. Her brother was also threatened as the hospital where he works.

Many in the international community hope that there will not be reprisals for the supporters of Gadhafi’s old regime once the rebels are in control of the country. However, Salma’s story seems to point to sentiments of retribution rather than reconciliation stemming from the rebels leaving many to wonder just who are the rebels.

MATTHEWCHAPTER 24

1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.

2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

3 ¶ And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by

Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

25 Behold, I have told you before.

26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

29 ¶ Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all

the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

36 ¶ But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

42 ¶ Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?

46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;

49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;

50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Occupy Wall Street is Now Global17

JCFHSAPM

According to an article from Fox News Latino, the Occupy Wall Street protests have turned into a global movement. Generally, protestors have rallied in opposition to corporate

greed and inequality in response to the poor global economy.

In Rome, protests have turned violent. According to Elizabeth Llorente’s article, “Protesters there smashed shop windows and torched cars as violence broke out during a demonstration in the Italian capital.”

(AP)Can Latinos learn from Occupy Wall Street?18

In addition to Rome, many other cities have joined in. Protestors plan to gather in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square to show their discontent with the current state of affairs. New Yorkers are still camped out in a park property in lower Manhattan refusing to leave for cleanup. In Bosnia, “Hundreds marched through the Bosnian city of Sarajevo carrying pictures of Che Guevara and old communist flags that read ‘Death to capitalism, freedom to the people.’”

Reports also tell of protests occurring in Sydney, Tokyo, Manila, Hong Kong and Seoul.

It remains to be seen whether the protests will have any effect on Wall Street or any other financial institution. The majority of the protests have been mild thus far, but there are worries that they may turn violent, as they did in Rome.

Qaddafi Dead; Asad in Syria Next?19

JCFHSAPM

Anthony Shadid of the New York Times writes that the death of Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi may trigger greater opposition to Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria.

(Reuters)Residents celebrated in Tripoli Thursday after hearing a report that Col. Moammar Gadhafi had been killed in Sirte.20

The Assad family has been in power for four decades and is currently facing strong opposition. Assad hopes to hold onto his rule of Syria. However, this is now a more difficult task now that the Libyan rebels have succeeded in removing Qaddafi from power and killing him with international support in NATO.

According to an activist, “The focus of the world will now turn to Syria.” Protestors strongly believe they can follow Libya’s model for removing Asad from power. However, they are concerned about their movement’s loss of momentum and also what form of intervention they will seek.

Tea Partiers Label Wall Street Protestors as

Different21

JCFHSAPM

According to Kate Zernike, Tea Party activists appear to be opposites of the Occupy Wall Street protestors. The New York Times article points to the perception of participants in the Wall Street protests as being “unemployed, uneducated and uniformed.”

(HSAPM)An explicit statement by protestors spray-painted on the wall of a privately-owned Devonshire Street property a half mile from the Federal Reserve in Downtown Boston.22

In addition, conservatives and Tea Party activists have portrayed the Occupy Wall Street as a mob and even a “messy, indolent, drug-addled and anti-

Semitic,” bunch. However, according to Zernike, the only significant similarity between the two protests is their sudden, rapid emergence “driven by anxiety about the economy.”

(NYT)A supporter of the Tea Party movement expressing herself at a protest in Washington in 2009.23

One major difference, according to the article, is where the blame for the poor economy is placed. Tea Partiers blame the government, whereas the Occupy Wall Street protestors blame the Federal Reserve, banks and the wealthy.
