HRT® – HYDROCARBON RECOVERY TECHNOLOGYSALT WATER DISPOSAL – PRODUCED WATER MANAGEMENT

A combination of factors in recent years has led to increased attention to water management in the oil and gas industry. Some of these factors include: limited water resources in certain areas, development of water-intensive technologies to better exploit unconventional plays, excessive transportation/disposal costs for water, a changing regulatory environment and a public push for sustainability and conservation relating to water as a resource.

The industry is taking a renewed approach to tackling its water management challenges. One of these challenges in particular is the fact that produced and flowback water streams must often be treated prior to disposal, reinjection, or reuse. The capital and operating costs associated with most treatment systems can be very high. The need for economic management of produced and flowback water is critical.

Salt water disposal wells are a vital part of the oil and gas production process. Their ability to accept and dispose of flowback and produced water make them a viable choice in

handling water disposal needs within the industry. And while a Salt Water Disposal Well may appear easy to operate and maintain, many challenges exist for well owners.

Well owners invest a large sum of money in drilling the well, constructing the facility, and operating the deep well injection pumps. Solids carryover through the facility can damage the deep well injection pumps and also plug the well formation. Pump repairs can be costly, and acid treatments or other repairs done to the well can not only be costly, but cause operational outages and loss of revenue.

Salt Water Disposal facilities can also suffer from lost oil recovery due to oil carryover or short retention time. Residual oil may be sent down the disposal well, causing loss of revenue and possible damage to the well formation.

    ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY

Pentair’s HRT™, or Hydrocarbon Recovery Technology, is a 2-stage system employing high performance particle separation with advanced coalescing technology to remove free and emulsified hydrocarbons as well as suspended solids from liquid streams. HRT’s robust design is scalable and modular, suitable for both new capital projects as well as placement in existing operating units. Each system is designed to address the specific operational constraints of the application.

    HRT STAGE 1: Particle Separation

The HRT-PS vessels first remove particles from the stream, capable of separating suspended solids as small as 0.5microns with a staggering 99.98% efficiency. The particle-free water then passes on to the organic separation stage.

HRT STAGE 2: Organic Separation (Hydrocarbon Recovery)

The HRT-OS vessel(s) then separates the hydrocarbon from the water by agglomerating free oil and emulsified sub-micron droplets into large droplets as the oil/water mixture passes through the advanced Liquiform media. The larger droplets, according to Stoke’s law, will have a settling velocity exponentially faster than in their original sheered state. This causes immediate separation of oil and water and allows the hydrocarbon to be trapped and bled off as low BS&W, sellable product.

Pentair’s HRT™ provides Salt Water Disposal operators dramatically improved solids control and increased recovery of higher quality oil. The HRT™ effluent water is much cleaner than it would be using conventional treatment technologies with particles removed at 99.98% efficiency and free/emulsified hydrocarbons reduced to less than 5 parts per million, protecting the environment, avoiding costly fines for poor effluent discharge quality, and/or protecting the SWD from occlusion caused by the

unintentional injection of agglomerated oil and solids. In recovering the maximum amount of free and emulsified oil at non-detect levels of BS&W, HRT™ will also generate profits, improving the bottom line.

All of this is achieved at an operating cost of just pennies per barrel of water treated. In the right conditions HRT quickly pays for itself and becomes a profit center, recovering more value in oil than the cost to operate.

    BENEFITS

Clients using HRT® on Salt Water Disposal systems have experienced operational, environmental and economic benefits, including:

    • Operational flexibility• Elimination of energy requirement• Elimination of need for chemicals• Minimal operational intervention• Improved process control• Improved effluent discharge quality• Maximized product recovery• Compact footprint • Modular design• Infinite turndown• Increased Reliability

Conventional Treatment relies on energy, chemicals, steady flow rates, and retention time to achieve its results. Loss of gas infusion or chemicals; changes to the incoming flow rate or incoming oil content; or upsets in the upstream process cause conventional systems to operate less efficiently, allowing more oil to bypass the system. Pentair’s HRT® system operates with no energy, no chemicals, and can operate at a steady state when changes to the incoming flow rate or incoming oil levels occur. This ensures the highest level of oil recov-ery under changing operating conditions.

How much oil are you throwing away? Oil is a valuable commodity. Even low lev-els of oil can add up to significant dollars. Treatment systems that allow oil to pass, even at low levels are costing you money. The chart below is based 10,000 barrels perdayofproducedwatercontainingresidualoil.Asmallamountofoilun-capturedcan add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Pentair’s HRT® system ensures the highest recovery of oil and the maximum profit for your operation.

TSS or Total Suspended Solids, is the amount of solids contained in a production stream. These solids can damage a well formation, damage pumps and valves, cause significant maintenance outages, and even lower the value of the recovered oil. Pentair’s HRT® system removes the TSS for pennies per barrel ensuring a low maintenance, highly efficient operation with maximum uptime.
