The Landfall: June 2009June 2009June 2009June 2009
Welcome to another edition of “The Landfall”. We are in full swing of another terrific boating season and it started out great this past weekend in Smith-field at Smithfield Station Marina. This rendezvous was courtesy of the Virginia Beach Sail & Power Squadron and I would like to thank Cdr. Johnson of
Virginia Beach S&PS and all their members who attended for an enjoyable week-end (see pictures on page 4). There were three squadrons in attendance. We had a great barbeque and games during the day on Saturday, and a lot of fun at kara-oke on the docks Saturday night. The Sunday Brunch at Smithfield Station Restau-rant was attended by many of the weekend participants and afterwards, some of us took a leisurely stroll through
town to see the historical houses and structures.
The Reichard family has acquired another “boat” (in the form of a dinghy) that we were hoping to obtain some good practice there in the waters of the Pagan River for the upcoming dinghy poker run in Cape Charles this July. Unfortunately, the motor didn’t want to cooperate, but that didn’t stop Joshua from show-ing us that he has hidden rowing talents. He was more than willing to operate the dinghy with old fashion muscle and deter-mination. He even rowed me around the basin area for a fun
treat.
We will be “Crossing Paths” at the D/5 and D/27 combined Summer Rendezvous on July 23 – 26, 2009. Don’t forget to submit your reservations for this historic event. This is a rare op-portunity to be a part of a combined Summer Council outing and you don’t want to miss out! Check out the “Latest News” section of the D/5 website at: http://uspsd5.org/ for

On Saturday, 16 May 09, I attended a District 5 Regional Educational Meeting. I learned one thing for sure, USPS is continually updating and adding training materials to their inventory. I know most of our members say I’ve taken all the boating course that I want, well have you considered checking out what
is available in the USPS
Learning Guides.
You say, what is a USPS Learning Guide: They are generally short booklets that pro-vide useful information on a variety of marine-related topics. They are available from USPS Headquarters by calling 1-888-FOR-USPS or on-line via the United States Power Squadrons Ship’s Store. Shipping and handling cost will be added to the price be-low. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American
Express are accepted.
These same items are also available to USPS members at reduced rates through the
Squadron Education Officer. Do you see any topics that interest you? Let me know and I will order the
guides at a reduced rate. Just send me an e-mail with you interest.
I hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe boating season.

Safe, Responsible & Fun Recreational Boating
MissionMissionMissionMissionMinimize the loss of life, personal injury, property damage and environmental
impact while maximizing the safe use and enjoyment of U.S. waterways by recreational boaters. The Ves-sel Safety Check process is one of “prevention through education, outreach and volunteer compliance” helping recreational boaters to gain a respect for the boating environment.
The VSC Program also helps to achieve voluntary compliance with federal and state recreational boating safety laws, particularly with regard to the carriage of safety equipment while raising boater awareness about safety and environmental issues through voluntary contact by a Vessel Examiner (VE). VE discus-sions with recreational boaters is designed to motivate maintaining and operating their boats in a safe manner, taking boating safety courses to increase their knowledge and skills in boating, and promoting safe boating.

GRASS CUTTING
It is that time of year again, the rains have come and the grass is
growing. The last several years it has been increasingly difficult to
find volunteers to cut the grass and we have been forced to hire a
groundskeeper to keep the grass under control. Currently we have
someone that is cutting the grass every two weeks. If anyone
would like to make a donation in lieu of actually mowing the lawn, please contact either Sharen
Reichard or Laura Cole. All help is greatly appreciated.

The Landfall: June 2009June 2009June 2009June 2009
The Squadron is in need of volunteers to as-
sist during the conduct of the State Boating
Classes that are being held every Saturday
(with some possible Sundays) at BASS PRO
Shop in Hampton. I know what you are think-
ing; “I am not an instructor, what can I do”.
Well the answer is—A LOT! It is true that in-
structors are needed, but still needed are
people to assist with registration / setup /
interface with students / or just a friendly
hello to make everyone feel at home. This is a unique opportunity to get out on a regular basis and make
contact with the boating public and inform them of the unique opportunities that exist for them in the
power squadron. Our points of contact for this is both Arlene Anderson and Gaylord Lockett. For more
information or to schedule yourself a time to help, please contact either one of them.
At the USPS Annual Meeting it was voted and
passed to switch the total membership over to an-
nual billing . What this means to us is that we will
now submit our membership dues directly to Na-
tional and then they will deposit the applicable
Squadron and district dues into the respective bank
accounts. All current members will be assigned an
anniversary date of June , while new members will
be assigned an anniversary date based on the date
when they joined USPS. Additionally we now have
the option of using a credit card to pay our dues and
they can also be paid online. One important point to
remember is that if you choose to make a donation
to the Squadron in excess of the amount owed on
your dues statement, DO NOT mail this to National UNLESS you desire that donation to be applied directly to the National Headquar-
ters. I mention this because I know that some of our members, even though not required to pay dues, still make a financial contribu-
tion to the squadron, and if returned to National, it will be posted to the National Treasury and will not make it back down to the
squadron level.
