INTRODUCTION A problem facing the product development community is the selection of a set of conditions which will result in a product with a desirable combination of properties. This essentially is a problem involving the simultaneous optimization of several responses (output) which depend upon a number of variables or sets of conditions (input). Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is used for developing, improving, and optimizing processes. It also has important application in the design, development, and formulation of new products, as well as in the improving of existing product. The most extensive applications of RSM are in the industrial world, particularly in situations where several input variables potentially influence some performance measure or quality characteristic of the product or process. We are usually interested in finding the best setting for the process factors (input) to produce a product with best properties. Response Surface Methodology is designed to find the optimal settings for a set of input that maximize (or minimize, keeping in a range) the output properties. OBJECTIVES The objective of this course is to present a user-friendly optimization technique, and show the benefits of optimization in improving, developing a product to meet customer requirements and reducing overall cost.
