● Questions and Answers

The HP SNMP Proxy Agent is software that can be installed on a desktop client PC to enableHP Web Jetadmin to discover and manage locally connected (e.g., USB) HP printers and scanners. The HP SNMP Proxy Agent functions by exposing management objects through the client PC'sMicrosoft SNMP service. A simple PC-Connected printer discovery in HP Web Jetadmin can discoverlocally attached printers. HP Web Jetadmin can then gather additional printer information such asremaining toner levels, page counts, and status through the proxy.

Features

The HP SNMP Proxy Agent includes the following functionality:

● HP Web Jetadmin will query the HP proprietary and standard management objects in thesupported devices. Different devices offer varying levels of support, but many devices exposetheir model name, engine page count, supplies levels, serial number, etc.

● HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 Service Release 2 (SR2) supports only reading of information from PC-Connected printers, not writing.

● HP Web Jetadmin detects status changes in a PC-Connected device by polling or manuallyrefreshing the device; traps are not supported for PC-Connected devices.

● A PC-Connected device will not appear in HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 until a successful discoverycompletes.

● The HP SNMP Proxy Agent 10.2.4 and HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 SR2 support multiple PC-Connected (e.g. USB) devices on a single desktop client PC.

● New: The HP SNMP Proxy Agent 10.2.4 adds support for some HP Officejet Pro devicesthrough the HP Officejet Basic Driver - IT Professional Use Only driver package.

● New: The HP SNMP Proxy Agent 10.2.4 adds support for many operating systems and devicessupported by the HP Universal Print Driver 5.0.3 for Windows.

● HP Web Jetadmin can perform discovery using IP Broadcast within PC-Connected discovery. The IP Broadcast packet used is an SNMP query. This discovery method will yield limitedresults. Some systems and many networks block IP Broadcast traffic for security and overallmanagement reasons. The workstation or server to which the IP Broadcast is directed musthave an SNMP service that responds to these packets. Other discovery methods such as IPRange and/or Specified Address Discovery are encouraged in a comprehensive and scaleddiscovery plan.

System Requirements

The HP SNMP Proxy Agent is supported on the following Microsoft Windows operating systems:

● Windows XP Professional (x86)

● Windows XP professional x64 Edition

● Windows Vista Business (x86)

● Windows Vista Business (x64)

● Windows 7 Professional (x86)

● Windows 7 Professional (x64)

● Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition

● Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition

● Windows Server 2008 Standard (x86)

● Windows Server 2008 Standard (x64)

The Windows SNMP Service must be installed, configured, and running to allow queries from theHP Web Jetadmin server:

● The SNMP Service Properties Accepted community names must include public with READONLY rights.

● To enable a configuration to be modified, you must also choose and configure a READ WRITEcommunity name.

● Configure the SNMP Service Properties to Accept SNMP packets from any host or from yourHP Web Jetadmin.

NOTE: Microsoft does not include the SNMP Service component feature with the home editions ofWindows. The exact mechanism for installing the SNMP Service varies with the Windows version. InWindows 7, use the control panel’s Programs and Features tool, invoke Turn Windows featureson or off from the sidebar, and enable the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) feature.

Firewall settings must permit HP Web Jetadmin to query the proxy agent using SNMP (UDP port 161should be open).

NOTE: Not all versions of Windows will automatically enable UDP Port 161 when you install theSNMP Service. If the SNMP Service is running but cannot be accessed from a remote machine, yourPC’s firewall may be blocking SNMP traffic.

Installation

You must install Microsoft’s SNMP Service prior to installing the HP SNMP Proxy Agent.

You may install the HP SNMP Proxy Agent either prior to or following the installation of your HPprinter’s driver.

Two modes of installation are available:

● Standalone installation: This will be the standard (non-silent) installation which takes inputfrom the user in the form of responses to the GUI dialog boxes. Use the command msiexec /i“HP SNMP Proxy.msi” (or just double-click the MSI).

● Silent Mode Installation/Network Installation: The silent mode of installation is provided for“push” based installations without using the GUI. use the command msiexec /i “HP SNMPProxy.msi” /qn.

Supported Printers

The HP SNMP Proxy Agent 10.2.4 supports many devices supported by the HP Universal PrinterDriver 5.0.3 for Windows and many HP Officejet Pro devices supported by the HP Officejet BasicDriver - IT Professional Use Only driver. A complete list of tested printers can be found in thewhitepaper titled Discovering PC-Connected Printers in HP Web Jetadmin.

Questions and Answers

Question Answer

Why doesn’t HP Web Jetadmin discover my locally attachedprinter?

The following troubleshooting steps may help analyze thisproblem:

● At the HP Web Jetadmin server machine, verify basicnetwork connectivity with your PC client (substitutingthe IPv4 address of your client’s PC for IPAddr): pingIPAddr.

● At the HP Web Jetadmin server machine, you can use a3rd party tool such as net-snmp’s snmpget to verifya successfully installed, configured, and running SNMPService and firewall on the client PC (substituting theIPv4 address of your client’s PC for IPAddr): snmpget-v1 -c public IPAddr 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0

● At the HP Web Jetadmin server, you can use a 3rdparty tool such as net-snmp’s snmpget (substitutingthe IPv4 address of your client’s PC for IPAddr):snmpget -v1 –c public IPAddr1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.4.3.13.1.0

If SNMP and the proxy agent are functioning, the agentresponds with an INTEGER value greater than zero orNO SUCH NAME if the proxy agent has not beensuccessfully installed.

● The registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard\HP SNMP Proxy\PrnId identifies the proxieddevices on the client PC. If your device does not appearin this list, try restarting the SNMP Service or rebootingthe PC. If the device is installed, powered-on andworking (e.g. you can print to it) but still does not appearin this list, its driver may not implement an enterprisedevice management interface.

Question Answer

After I run a PC-Connected printer discovery and the locallyattached printers are discovered, how do I know which onesare PC-Connected printers?

Discovered PC-Connected printers will be displayed in thedevice lists with the rest of the networked printers.

To have a device list that shows only those devices that werediscovered as PC-Connected devices, enable a filter throughView > Preferences > Device Filters, select PC-Connected Devices.

To display a PC-Connected Devices column on any devicelist that shows which devices are PC-Connected (the valuefor the PC-Connected devices will be Yes while otherdevices will show no value), go to the device list and right-click in a column header. Select Customize > Advanced. Then you can add the column PC-Connected Devices todisplay on the device lists.

Can I generate reports using HP Web Jetadmin Reportsfeatures on my locally attached printers?

Yes, reports should be possible on PC-Connected devices.Of course, the data that can be collected will differ fromdevice to device.

What happens when the IP Address of my client PCchanges?

HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 SR2 will find the proxied devices atthe PC’s new IP Address following the next successfuldiscovery.

Can I use any version of HP Web Jetadmin to manage PC-Connected printers?

The HP Web Jetadmin SNMP Proxy Agent 10.2.4 requiresHP Web Jetadmin 10.2 SR2 for full functionality.
