    F G '• How is HPV spread?

    • HPV is spread from direct s+in!to!s+in contact during sexual activity. includ

intercourse and oral sex• both opposite sex and same sex partners can spread the disease

    • Is HPV a concern for you?

    • 3I of cervical cancer is caused by strains 2J and 2K

    • 3I of genital warts are caused by strains J and 22

    • 'nyone can become infected with HPV

    • 'bout 9I of all sexually active people become infected with the virus at s

their lifetime ! many people with HPV infections do not have any symptomscarry the virus and infect others

    •  1here are no routine tests to detect HPV infection

    • How is HPV prevented?

    • 5ale and female condoms can reduce. but not eliminate the ris+ of HPV infdelaying sexual onset and limiting the number of sexual partners can help ris+ of getting HPV ! the HPV vaccine. called ardasilM. protects against fo

HPV# strains J. 22. 2J. and 2K ! the HPV vaccine is free only for females froupwards

Pathogenesis• HPV is a double!stranded /0' virus. which infects s>uamous epithelia. including th

mucosae of the upper respiratory and anogenital tracts

    • HPV infection occurs at the basal epithelium"

    • :nfection with one type of HPV does not prevent infection with another type

    • HPV viruses are classiNed as either high!ris+ or low!ris+ types depending on thei

    with the development of cancer

    • 5ost HPV infections are asymptomatic and result in no clinical disease

    • urveillance of HPV is complex due to the high proportion of asymptomatic infectio

variable presentation of the di4erent viral types and the long period between infec

    disease"

    • 1he most common clinically signiNcant manifestation of persistent genital HPV infe

    cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. or C:0"

ymptoms and 1reatment• People with HPV may experience no visible signs or symptoms or may have warts in p

cannot see ,such as the cervix-"

    • enital warts are raised or at growths that are usually esh coloured or whitish in ap

    • enital warts usually do not cause itching or burning"

    • :f left untreated. genital warts may disappear" However. HPV infection remains and w

    reappear"

    • HPV is often diagnosed through a visual examination of genital warts" :n some cases.

necessary" 1he presence of HPV on the cervix is detected through a Pap smear"

    • !ere is no treatment for t!e virus itself" but t!ere are treatments for t!e p

    Prevention

Practice abstinence• Have a mutually monogamous relationship

    • Qse condoms every time" But since HPV is transms+in to s+in and condoms do not cover all a4ecteareas. even condom users may get HPV

    • et the HPV vaccine to lower your ris+ of HPV inand diseases related to it

HPV and Cancers• exually transmitted HPVs fall into two categories#

    • Low!ris+ HPVs. which do not cause cancer but can cause s+in warts ,technically

condylomata acuminata- on or around the genitals or anus" Ror example. HPV tycause 3 percent of all genital warts"

    • High!ris+ or oncogenic HPVs. which can cause cancer" 't least a doDen high!ris+ have been identiNed" 1wo of these. HPV types 2J and 2K. are responsible for theHPV!caused cancers"

    • Cervical cancers are caused by HPV infections HPV types. 2J and 2K. responsible forpercent of all cases

    • HPV also causes anal cancer. with about K9 percent of all cases caused by HPV!2J"

    • HPV types 2J and 2K have also been found to cause close to half of vaginal. vulvar. acancers

    • HPV infections have been found to cause cancer of the oropharynx. the base of the ttonsils"

    • Other factors may increase the ris+ of developing cancer following a high!ris+ HPV in 1hese other factors include the following#

    • mo+ing

    • Having a wea+ened immune system

    • Having many children ,for increased ris+ of cervical cancer-
