The IT landscape is changing quickly. Today’s customers

are moving away from their traditional infrastructure

approach, towards a workload focus and IT that leads

to better business outcomes such as Mobility and

Analytics. At the same time these customers are

looking for lower cost, more efficient delivery models

driven by Cloud, Hybrid IT and IT-as-a-Service.

To achieve this organisations are transforming their

core digital delivery, moving away from legacy,

siloed compute and storage, toward virtualisation,

convergence and now hyper-convergence, with the

aim of simplifying operations, accelerating business

agility and freeing up IT to innovate.

As businesses of all shapes and sizes embrace

the fast-changing IT landscape, this Azlan thought

leadership paper investigates the drivers and benefits

of hyper-convergence and the contribution it’s

making to IT transformation.

SILOED, LEGACY ARCHITECTURES ARE INHIBITING BUSINESS GROWTH

COMPLEXITY IS STIFLING IT EFFICIENCY AND INNOVATION

ORGANISATIONS ARE PUSHING THE USE-CASE BOUNDARIES

INTEGRATED SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY HAS EVOLVED

HYPER-CONVERGENCE IS THE INDUSTRY’S FAST-GROWING RESPONSE

64.5%CAGR 2014-19, IDC

The integrated systems technologies underpinning hyper-convergence: VMware,

VMware Horizon and Citrix XenDesktop, have matured as virtualisation, virtual desktop

infrastructures, private and hybrid cloud have become widespread. At the same time the

clustered, scale-out architecture driving many of the benefits of hyper-converged systems

are now at home on familiar, affordable x86 systems.

Hyper-converged systems, integrating compute, storage and storage networking into a

single-software or appliance, are the industry’s response to these shortcomings. Interest

is so strong, hyper-convergence now represents one of the fastest-growing IT sectors,

with IDC2 (2016) forecasting growth at 64.5% CAGR through 2014-19, almost $5bn

globally.

“Many organisations, according to Gartner, have server virtualisation rates that exceed 75%, demonstrating the maturity of the market.”

Originally built to support traditional applications and

business processes, legacy infrastructures are proving

too costly and rigid for today’s dynamic demands. In older

environments deploying applications and servers, adding

capacity and provisioning storage is taking weeks instead

of minutes. Separate silos of compute, storage and

SAN, dedicated to individual applications and business

units are now unfit for purpose in this age of IT agility.

IT teams are overstretched managing and supporting

disparate systems, whilst overprovisioning and ageing

systems are driving up power costs and consuming

too much space in the datacentre.

The administrative burden of traditional IT is

inhibiting efficiency and innovation. Running a

multitude of platforms requires an equivalent

investment in the IT skills and resource to deploy,

configure and manage them. Add the complexity

attached to procurement, licensing and support

across such disparate systems and its clear

there must be a more cost-efficient alternative.

The business case for hyper-converged is extending

as organisations explore new uses. More and more

virtual workloads are moving into hyper-converged

environments including mission-critical applications,

NoSQL, Hadoop. Increasingly, a wider range of

virtualised workloads including mission-critical

and cloud-native applications are being run on

hyper-converged infrastructure, as well as distributed

NoSQL and Hadoop-based applications.

Hyper-convergence is perfect for highly virtualised environments; deploy new systems

and manage firmware and driver updates in just a few clicks, makes it easy to keep

virtual machine sprawl in check.

The simplicity of hyper-convergence allows IT departments to invest less time managing

core infrastructure and more time enabling self-service for their customers.

Single point of contact for support, speeding up time-to-resolution

Scale-out architectures and ‘pay-as-you-grow” pricing mean hyper-converged systems

can be scaled and reconfigured without impacting application performance and without forklift

upgrades.

Move data easily across systems, sites and cloud.

Common management tools eliminate multiple consoles, less time spent faultfinding

and fixing.

50% lower acquisition costs than a similar scale up shared storage solution.

More compute from less technology, reducing footprint and physical

parts to manage.

SMBs are looking at hyper-convergence as a replacement for their entire datacentre

environment, enterprises see it as part of their strategy and a means to drive

economy of scale.

Page 7: HPE - Hyper Convergence without the Hype Thought... · 2016-08-22 · are now at home on familiar, affordable x86 systems. Hyper-converged systems, integrating compute, storage and

With IT consumers perpetually seeking simplicity,

performance, innovation and reduced costs it’s inevitable

that hyper-convergence will become established as a

mainstream strategy over the coming years. The early

adopters are already enjoying substantial financial and

operational benefits and the ecosystem of applications

and data solutions attached to hyper-convergence is

growing daily.

Virtualisation is now a mature technology, with some

saying the market is reaching saturation point.

What’s clear is that customers will be looking for

solutions that extend the benefits of this proven

approach, and hyper-convergence provides

them with a simple, logical next step with

pre-established use cases.

Hyper-convergence bridges what Azlan terms

the ‘Core’ and the ‘New’. Core because it’s

built on familiar HPE technologies including

ProLiant, OneView and StoreVirtual making it

easy to integrate into existing environments

and skillsets. New because it opens doors

to the innovations that will drive IT in the

coming 5-10 years including cloud, hybrid

IT and self-service business models.

Customers are looking for innovation,

something hyper-convergence

delivers and enables, but they’re

also looking for a safe investment

path. HPE Hyper-Converged

solutions meet this key business

need. They’re built using proven

HPE components and they

form a highly achievable next

step on the road to fully

composable infrastructure

solutions, offering the

ultimate in flexibility and

business agility from a

100% programmable

infrastructure.
