HPC Cloud is an easily accessible solution for those seeking to increase their compute capacity without preinvestment. It simply offload your current workload to a managed infrastructure, or you can use it to handle jobs requiring more advanced features like GPU hardware acceleration and high memory capabilities. What is HPC Cloud? HPC Cloud is an InfrastructureasaService (IaaS) provisioning customized clusters that gives users full control of the software stack and underlying infrastructure. It has a fast private, secure, internal and external network and multiple storage types to fit your specific needs. The HPC Cloud supports: Fast CPU cores in a single powerful node, and full multicore, multinodes for own use Flexibility to install any Operating Systems and software of your choice Unlimited data transfers for upand downloads GPU nodes for GPUaccelerated applications Functionality to run MPI (Message Passing Interface) or multithreaded applications Highmemory node for analyses that require large datasets to be loaded in memory Additional Services The following additional services are available on request. Consultancy SURFsara’s advisors consult you on optimizing integrating and sharing your workflow. For that we have expertise on virtual HPC Cloud infrastructure. Visualization Interactively visualize your results using the Collaboratorium, or we create visualizations for demonstrations and presentations for you. ‘SURFlichtpaden’ SURFlichtpaden enables you to create ultrafast connections between your own network and your private network on the HPC Cloud. Light paths provide security, reliability and guaranteed high capacity. Data Archive HPC Cloud is connected to SURFsara’s central archive, for longterm and secure storage of your data. UseCasesHere are a few examples to illustrate what HPC Cloud is used for. More references can be found on the SURFsara website.  UrbanFlood:early‐warningsystemsforfloods,UvA

BetterfloodprotectionthankstoHPCCloudTo predict  the  influence of  seasonal  and  global  changes on  the stability of  flood defense  systems, modeling  and  simulation  are necessary. UvA  uses  SURFsara’s  HPC  Cloud  for  these  activities: “The key  features  that make Cloud  technology very attractive  to the  UrbanFlood  project  are  flexibility  and  on‐demand  resource availability.  For urgent  computing  in  critical  situations,  the high performance aspect is also very important. That's why SURFsara's HPC Cloud is the best solution for us.”  Tweettextanalysis,MeertensInstitute

TwobilliontweetsusedasresearchmaterialsWhat  do  we  twitter  about?  Which  words  are  used  in  which location, in which context? This information is publicly available via the  twiqs.nl website.  The website  allows  researchers  to  create heat  maps.  These  geographical  representations  help  pinpoint where specific words are used frequently in the Netherlands. The SURFsara  Hadoop  cluster  provides  computing  power  and  the requisite storage capacity. Some calculations require a great deal of computing power, especially in cases where a researcherwantsto study theuse of  specific words over a  longer period of  time (such as a month). SURFsara is running the twiqs.nl website on the HPC Cloud, which is also being used to store tweets. The collected tweets  are  then  copied  to  the Hadoop  cluster, which  does  the actual computing. “These are extremely large calculations”, Tjong Kim  Sang  explains.  “Some  heat  maps  require  many  hours  of computing power”.HPC Cloud Technical Specifications Below is a summary of the technical specifications (August 2015).
