Our industry is undergoing a time of rapid innovations. It can be a challenge staying current on new technologies, products and product updates. You never want a customer to ask about a product you’ve never heard of. That’s why HPBExpo is on my schedule, each and every year. By attending HPBExpo for more than 20 years, I’ve been able to stock the latest products on my floor and stay a step ahead of my competition.

HPBExpo is North America’s largest indoor-outdoor products show. It features more than 375 manufacturers displaying their newest innovations. It’s a chance to see and touch new offerings—an experience you can’t get over the Internet or in catalogues and brochures. I usually come home with four or five new products that we begin selling immediately.

Attending HPBExpo gives you an opportunity to meet hundreds of manufacturers, many whom are no longer just a voice on the other end of the phone. You also meet hundreds of other retailers in an informal setting where you can swap stories about what’s working and what’s not.

HPBExpo has more than 40 educational offerings to help build technical and safety knowledge, sales and management skills, and manufacturer-specific training. We look forward to the New Product Pavilion and First-Time Exhibitor Pavilion each year. This is where we find new, cutting-edge products for our customers.

And there’s the fun stuff too, like the tailgating event, Big Green Egg Cook-Off, the Attendees’ Choice Awards and the annual VESTA awards. Not to mention, the host city for HPBExpo 2016 is my hometown of New Orleans! The convention center is in walking distance of everything—the French Quarter, the River Walk, and the all-night bars and restaurants. Don’t miss this chance to experience HPBExpo and the abundance of the Crescent City. Register for HPBExpo today.

HPBExpo 2016

Education

Each year, the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Education Foundation brings you a wide variety of education sessions over 2 1/2 days

at HPBExpo. Starting on Wednesday, March 16, the 40+ sessions are rich with Technical, SHL and Elective CEUs for those that are NFI or CSIA Certified. Business, safety, health, liability, technical and troubleshooting classes will all be offered. Manufacturers are invited to present product-specific information in our Manufacturer Specific Training Program. NFI Review classes are offered for those preparing to take the NFI Exam or anyone with an Education Passport that wants to brush up on the basic technical information that is so easy to forget.

This year, we are thrilled to bring back an HPBExpo favorite speaker—Ted Topping, president of Creative Insights, Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia. As a consultant, speaker and author, he helps consumer-facing companies improve the customer experience they provide. In seven sessions at HPBExpo 2016, Ted will help you look at your business from a big-picture perspective and propose ways that you can deliver on the crucial details that will make your business attractive to customers. Topics for his classes include:

• Keeping your service department profitable • Managing your time • Motivating your employees • Practical ideas you can put to work today • Making the transition to management

Ted’s classes are always ranked at the top of the list on HPBExpo course evaluations.

But don’t just stop there. Twenty other instructors will also be presenting relevant topics. There is nowhere else in the hearth industry where you can learn so much in such a short period of time.

NFI CERTIFICATIONThe National Fireplace Institute® (NFI) is the professional certification division of the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Education Foundation (HPBEF). NFI’s objective is to increase

public safety by establishing meaningful credentials for professionals involved in planning and installing residential hearth appliances and venting systems.

This is your chance to become NFI Certified at the hearth industry’s premier event, with review courses taught by some of the industry’s best experts. Benefits of becoming certified include:

• Increased employee confidence and retention—fewer complaints and callbacks

• A competitive edge over your competition— more customers = more profit!

• A chance to lower insurance premiums• Respect from building and code officials• Possible recognition by state/local government

There are now thousands of NFI Certified professionals in the hearth industry. HPBExpo is your chance to add your name to the list.

NFI GENERAL INFORMATIONHow to Participate in the NFI Certification Program at HPBExpoAn NFI Certification package provides access to any one of the scheduled review courses and exams: review courses are offered Wednesday, March 16 and Thursday, March 17. Exams are offered Wednesday through Friday. Participants are not required to register for a specific day for review courses or exams. Be sure to register well in advance of HPBExpo to allow study time before attending the review course and taking the exam. Upon registration, the study manual will be sent to the participant via ground shipping service.

Confused about the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for New Residential Wood Heaters? Unaware of the looming energy conservation standards proposed for all gas and propane hearth appliances by the Department of Energy (DOE)?

Join HPBA’s Government Affairs staff at HPBExpo 2016 for two special meetings: one specifically for manufacturers and one geared toward retailers, distributors and reps.

For Manufacturers:Gas and Solid Fuel Hearth Appliance Manufacturer MeetingWednesday, March 16, 20168:00 am–10:30 am

The first half of this meeting is a must for all manufacturers of natural gas and propane-fueled hearth products (including outdoor products) while the second half will review the EPA’s NSPS.

For Retailers, Distributors and Reps:Earn CEUs* for an education course titled, “Government Affairs Review of Solid Fuel and Gas Hearth Products Regulations.” HPBA’s Government Affairs staff will provide you with everything you need to know about tax credits, glass-fronted gas fireplace safety and federal DOE and EPA issues and their impact on you and your customers.Friday, March 18, 20163:00 pm–4:30 pm

* Please note that you do not need to register for these education courses to attend this session.
