Today’s CIO mandate: Do more with lessCIOs are constantly being asked to do more with less. Although the complexity of managing enterprise applications is escalating, smaller budgets and fewer resources make it difficult to meet the demands of today’s global enterprises. New technologies—such as mobile devices—are fueling user demands, but current IT budgets are being used to maintain applications on old technology (PCs), with no additional budget left to support new initiatives. For companies looking for an alternative, Gartner research reports that thin-client computing can save enterprises as much as 40% over traditional PCs.

Market leaders create a best-in-class solutionHP has extensive industry knowledge and experience managing thin-computing environments, which we have cultivated to create Thin Client Management Services. We have leveraged our relationships with market leaders—Citrix and AppSense—to create a fully integrated, thin-client solution that provides better security and lower costs than PCs.

•Citrix Presentation Server—Supplies the software that provides fast, secure access to full-featured applications over any network

•AppSense Management Suite—Ensures the security and scalability of the server-based computing farms and enhances user response times and overall performance

Thin client devices produce eco-friendly outcomes•Reduces the physical footprint of users’ workstations

•Decreases power consumption, heat output, and CO2 emissions

•Meets ISO 14001 and ROHS certifications

•Uses the mandatory recycling process to reduce landfill waste

A better solutionCompared to PCs, thin-client devices and management services enable clients to:

•Lower hardware acquisition, support, application deployment, and energy costs

•Deploy software to a few servers instead of numerous desktops

•Eliminate the potential for lost, stolen, or corrupted data

•Enable rapid, highly efficient deployment of new applications or upgrades

•Increase user satisfaction by decreasing the need for service desk and site support interaction

When deployed in scale, a thin-client architecture driven by centralized servers in a traditional SBC model can offer functionality similar to that of desktops with local processing—but with significant power savings.

“Green Benefits Put Thin-Client Computing Back On The Desktop Hardware Agenda,” Forrester, March 10, 2008

From the data center to the desktopThe powerhouse behind our thin-client management solution is the HP data center, which runs the applications, delivers a display to the users, and securely stores the end user’s data. Managing applications in the data center creates a flexible yet secure IT infrastructure. All your applications reside in one centralized location, simplifying upgrades and patches. And because information never leaves the data center, we can help you prevent theft and loss of your critical business data.

Thin Client Management Services centralizes your applications—delivering them from the data center, not the desktop. While the software functions the same way to the end user, the IT organization benefits from lower costs, stronger security, better performance, and increased flexibility and scalability.

Get more value from your applications•Lower total cost of operations—On average, thin

clients save more than $1,000 per seat a year in maintenance costs

•Improved enterprise agility—Server images are standardized, providing a cost-effective way to manage systems, rapidly deploy new software, and add new users

•Increased security—Thin clients have no local storage or disk drives, so sensitive data remains on the server, and security can be managed centrally

•Decreased service support—A thin-client device has fewer moving parts, resulting in fewer service calls

•Improved refresh cycles—Thin Client devices have a longer life cycle than PCs (five to seven years versus three years for a PC)

•Automated high availability—Users are automatically routed to the least busy server. If a server goes down, users are immediately redirected to another server.

Put your mission-critical applications in our hands•HP has a long-standing relationship with best-in-class

vendors Citrix and AppSense

•HP has more than 13 years of experience providing Thin Client Management Services

•We are one of the largest Citrix deployers in the world, with more than 300 certified Citrix technicians deploying and managing over 250,000 seats worldwide

•HP received the 2009 Citrix Ready Solution of the Year Award

•We are recognized as a Leader in Gartner’s 2009 European and North American Magic Quadrants for Help Desk and Desktop Outsourcing Services

•HP offers market-leading technology: ranked #1 in technology hardware and #1 in distributed management software

•HP was ranked #1 in “Global IT Infrastructure Outsourcing” by Forrester Research (March 2009)

Centralized application managementIn this transportation client’s previous IT environment, applications were installed locally. This drove up IT costs as a result of periodic hardware upgrades, and installing and configuring software updates on each desktop.

EDS, now HP, developed an efficient, robust, and secure thin-client management solution to meet the client’s requirements. First, we created a proof of concept and then installed it at the client’s corporate headquarters. Applications can now be accessed through thin-client devices.

The result: Management is centralized in the data center, support costs were reduced, data security enhanced, and the most recent version of applications are delivered to end users for full performance.
