SYBILL TRELAWNEY (V.O.) *3D*...approaches... *3D*

INT. KITCHEN - 4 PRIVET DRIVE - MORNING *3D*

(1/11/1981)

Close-up shot of an extremely boring tie. The camera zooms out to *3D*see the reflection of VERNON DURSLEY, a man in his early 20s, inthe kitchen mirror. The mirrored version of Vernon smiles to *3D*himself. He picks up his briefcase and walks over to his wife, *3D*PETUNIA DURSLEY, also in her early 20s. The kiss on the cheek he *3D*gives her is viewed through the mirror. Petunia notices the *3D*

mirror and looks at herself and Vernon through it, smiling. A  *3D*CLATTER and a splatter... *3D*

TELEVISION - JIM MCGUFFIN *3D*(CONT’D) *3D*

Viewers as far apart as Kent, Yorkshireand Dundee have been phoning in to tell

me that they’ve had a downpour of *2D*shooting stars! Perhaps people have beencelebrating Bonfire Night early - it’snot until next week, folks! *2D*

Finally, he decides to talk to Petunia *3D*

VERNON DURSLEYEr - Petunia *3D*

Petunia doesn’t look up, but replies. *3D*

PETUNIA DURSLEY *3D*Yes? *3D*

VERNON DURSLEY *3D*You haven’t heard from your sister *3D*lately, have you? *12b/7*

Petunia stops everything she is doing and replies rudely. *3D*

PETUNIA DURSLEY *3D*No. Why?

VERNON DURSLEYFunny stuff on the news. *3D*

(He motions his hand *3D*towards it.) *3D*Owls, shooting stars, and there were alot of funny-looking people in towntoday. I thought, maybe, it was something *3D*to do with, you know, her lot.

Petunia sniffs, in away of reply, and continues to prepare *3D*dinner. Vernon looks a little scared to say his next sentence *3D*

VERNON DURSLEY (CONT’D)Their son, about Dudley’s age now, *3D*

wouldn’t he be, what’s his name again? *3D*

Howard isn’t it?

PETUNIA DURSLEY(Still making dinner) *3D*

Harry. Nasty, common name, if you ask me.

Camera starts to zoom in on Vernon, which is horribly unsettled

VERNON DURSLEYYes I quite agree. *11/7*

We pass through the window... *12a/7*

EXT. PRIVET DRIVE - MIDNIGHT *3D*(1-2/11/1981)

...and all turns to night. The cat is still sitting on the brick*12a/7*fence. It is stiff and looking in one direction. The camera thenshows that the road is deserted. It slowly lays to rest on one of *3D*the street lamps. *11/7*

POP. Pause. Then a different POP as the lamp extinguishes. *3D*

The camera cuts back to the cat, which is now moving its head. *11/7*The lamp nearest the brick wall extinguishes with another pop. *11/7*The camera then cuts to an elderly man (ALBUS DUMBLEDORE) *3D*standing in the once deserted street, he is putting away anobject which looks like a cigarette lighter (Deluminator). *11/7*

Dumbledore sits next to the cat on the fence and, after a *3D* moment’s pause, turns and speaks to it. *3D*

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREFancy seeing you here, ProfessorMcGonagall.

The camera turns to see that the cat is transforming into a womanin her late 50s (MINERVA MCGONAGALL), wearing a cloak. *11/7*

MINERVA MCGONAGALLHow did you know it was me?

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREMy dear Professor, I’ve never seen a catsit so stiffly.

MINERVA MCGONAGALLYou’d be stiff if you’d been sitting on abrick wall all day.

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREAll day? When you could have beencelebrating? *3D*

MINERVA MCGONAGALL(Angrily)

Oh yes, everyone’s celebrating, allright. Even the Muggles have noticed *3D*something’s going on. *3D*

McGonagall points to number four, Privet Drive. *3D*

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREYou can’t blame them. We’ve had preciouslittle to celebrate for eleven years.

Pause. McGonagall seems angry *3D*

MINERVA MCGONAGALL *3D*A fine thing it would be if, on the veryda y Yo u- Kn ow -W ho s ee ms t o ha vedisappeared at last, the Muggles foundout about us all. *3D*

(Pause) *3D*I suppose he really has gone, Dumbledore?

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREIt certainly seems so. *3D*

Pause.

MINERVA MCGONAGALLYou know what everyone is saying? About *3D*

 why he’s disappeared?

Dumbledore says nothing. *3D*

MINERVA MCGONAGALL (CONT’D)What they’re saying is that night You- *3D*Know-Who turned up in Godric’s Hollow. He *3D*

went to find the Potters. The rumour isthat Lily and James Potter are, are, that

they’re dead.Dumbledore bows his head, McGonagall gasps.

MINERVA MCGONAGALL (CONT’D)Lily and James, I can’t believe it. *3D*

Dumbledore pats McGonagall on the shoulder.

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREI know, I know.

MINERVA MCGONAGALL

(Sniffing) *3D*That’s not all. They’re saying he triedto kill the Potter’s son, Harry. But, hecouldn’t. *3D*

(Pause) *3D*No one knows why, or how, but they’re *3D*saying that when he couldn’t kill HarryPotter, Voldemort’s power somehow broke, and that’s why he’s gone.

Dumbledore nods.

MINERVA MCGONAGALL (CONT’D)It’s, it’s true? After all he’s done, allthe people he’s killed, he couldn’t killa little boy? But how did Harry survive? *3D*

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREWe can only guess, we may never know.

Pause. *2D*

ALBUS DUMBLEDORE (CONT’D)Hagrid’s late. I suppose it was he whotold you I’d be here, by the way?

MINERVA MCGONAGALLYes. And I don’t suppose you’re going to

tell me why you’re here of all places?

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREI’ve come to bring Harry to the only *3D*family he now has left. *3D*

McGonagall is confused, but not for long, as Dumbledore looks up *3D*at 4 Privet Drive, and McGonagall is suddenly shocked. *3D*

MINERVA MCGONAGALLYou can’t mean the people who live here? *3D*You couldn’t find two people who are less *3D*

like us. Harry Potter come and live here! *3D*Dumbledore speaks reasonably calm. *3D*

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREIt’s the best place for him. His aunt anduncle will be able to explain everythingto him when he’s older. I’ve written them a letter.

MINERVA MCGONAGALLA letter? Really Dumbledore, you thinkyou can explain all this in a letter? *3D*

Dumbledore still looks at the house and does not reply. Pause. *3D*

MINERVA MCGONAGALL (CONT’D) *3D*How is the boy getting here, Dumbledore? *3D*

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREHagrid’s bring him.

MINERVA MCGONAGALLYou think it

(Pause) wise to trust Hagrid with something asimportant as this?

Dumbledore turns on McGonagall, but speaks calm. *3D*

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREI would trust Hagrid with my life.

MINERVA MCGONAGALLI’m not saying his heart isn’t in theright place but... *3D*

Suddenly, a RUMBLE is heard.

MINERVA MCGONAGALL (CONT’D)

What was that?

McGonagall and Dumbledore get of the brick wall and look down thedeserted street. The rumble is getting louder. When McGonagall *11/7*finishes her search, she looks to Dumbledore, who is looking atthe sky. A giant motorbike is landing. On the motorbike is RUBEUS *11/7*HAGRID, an extremely tall man (half-giant) in his early 50s. He *3D*gets off, carrying a bundle of blankets.

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREHagrid. At last. *11/7*

Hagrid looks down at the blankets. A 1-year-old Harry Potter is *1a/8*sleeping inside them. Dumbledore addresses Hagrid.

ALBUS DUMBLEDORE (CONT’D) *11/7*No problems, were there?

RUBEUS HAGRIDNo, sir - house was almost destroyed, butI got him out OK. *3D*

Dumbledore and McGonagall observe the baby. It has black hair and *11/7*green eyes. On its forehead is a cut, shaped like lightning. *11/7*

MINERVA MCGONAGALLIs that where...?

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREYes. He’ll have that scar forever.

MINERVA MCGONAGALLCouldn’t you do something about it,Dumbledore?

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREEven if I could, I wouldn’t. Scars cancome in handy. *3D*

(Pause) *3D*Well - give him here, Hagrid - we’dbetter get this over with.

Harry is passed from Hagrid to Dumbledore. The three of them turnto face number 4, sadness over all their faces.

RUBEUS HAGRIDCould I - could I say good-bye to him,sir?

Hagrid bends down and gives baby Harry a kiss, then lets out asaddened howl. McGonagall pats Hagrid on the arm. Dumbledore *3D*

makes his way to the front door of number 4 and lays Harry on the *11/7*doormat. Dumbledore then takes out a letter and tucks it in *11/7*

Harry’s blankets. Dumbledore walks back and the three of them stand silently for a while, staring at baby Harry.

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREWell, that’s that. We’ve no businessstaying here. We may as well go and jointhe celebrations.

RUBEUS HAGRIDYeah, I best get this bike away. G’night,Professor McGona gall - ProfessorDumbledore, sir.

Still moping up his tears, Hagrid gets back on the bike anddeparts. *3D*

ALBUS DUMBLEDOREI shall see you soon, I expect, ProfessorMcGonagall.

McGonagall blows her nose in a way of reply. Dumbledore walksback out to road. He pulls out the Deluminator and clicks itonce, all the street lights come back to life. He looks back atnumber four, Privet Drive, where a tabby cat can now be seen,*12a/7*slowly departing.

ALBUS DUMBLEDORE (CONT’D)Good luck, Harry

PETUNIA DURSLEYDarling, you haven’t counted AuntieMarge’s present.

She points to the smallest present.

DUDLEY DURSLEY *3D*All right, thirty-seven then.

Dudley gets angry. His hands are both on the table. Harry takeshis plate to the kitchen and continues to eat there.

VERNON DURSLEYLittle tyke wants his money’s worth, justlike his father. ’Atta boy, Dudley!

He ruffles Dudley’s hair, but Dudley isn’t paying attention. Hehas just unwrapped a remote control aeroplane and has dived for *11/7*another present. None of the telephone conversation is heard. *3D*Harry just continues eating and Dudley rips the wrapping of a *3D*

cine-camera and a computer game. Petunia eventually comes back, *3D*both angry and worried.

PETUNIA DURSLEYBad news, Vernon. Mrs. Figg’s broken herleg. She can’t take him.

Petunia jerks her head towards the kitchen, where Harry is stilleating. Dudley finally looks up, his mouth open in horror; *3D*ripping the wrapping he had just been holding as he does so,showing a gold wrist-watch. P et uni a and Vernon hold a *3D*conversation, ignoring the children, mainly Harry. *3D*

Petunia looks at Harry for a second, eyebrows raised. She then *3D*speaks her next words slowly. *3D*

Suddenly a loud wailing noise is heard. Dudley has begun to fake *3D*cry.

MR OLLIVANER (O.S.) *12a/7*Good afternoon. *12a/7*

Harry jumps. So does Hagrid. The chair which is on makes a*12a/7*crunching noise. Hagrid quickly gets off it. *12a/7*

Mr Ollivander comes forward, old and pale and with long fingers. *12a/7*

MR OLLIVANER (CONT’D) *12a/7*I thought I'd be seeing you soon. Harry *12a/7*Potter. You have your mother's eyes. Ten *12a/7*and a quarter inches long, swishy, made *12a/7*

MR OLLIVANER *12a/7*Hold out your arm. *12a/7*

(Harry does) *12a/7*That's it. *12a/7*

The measuring tape measures from shoulder to finger, wrist to*12a/7*elbow, shoulder to floor, knee to armpit and round his head.*12a/7*While it does this, Ollivander searches for wands while saying: *12a/7*

MR OLLIVANER (CONT’D) *12a/7*Every Ollivander wand has a core of a *12a/7*powerful magical substance, Mr Potter. We *12a/7*use unicorn hairs, phoenix tail feathers, *12a/7*and the heartstrings of dragons. No two *12a/7*Ollivander wands are the same, and of *12a/7*course, you will never get such good *12a/7*results with another wizard's wand. *12a/7*

The measuring tape begins to measure around Harry’s nostrils. *12a/7*

MR OLLIVANER (CONT’D) *12a/7*That will do. *12a/7*

The tape falls to the ground. Mr Ollivander comes out, a wand in*12a/7*his hand, which he passes to Harry. *12a/7*

Harry, feeling foolish, begins to wave it, but it is snatched out*12a/7*of his hand by Ollivander. *12a/7*

MR OLLIVANER (CONT’D) *12a/7*No, no - here. *12a/7*

(He passes Harry another *12a/7* wand) *12a/7*

HARRY POTTER *12a/7*Sorry, but what's curious? *12a/7*

Mr Ollivander looks straight at Harry. *12a/7*

MR OLLIVANER *12a/7*I remember every wand I've ever sold, Mr *12a/7*Potter. It so happens that the phoenix *12a/7*

whose tail feather is in your wand, gave *12a/7*another feather - just one other. It is *12a/7*very curious indeed that you should be *12a/7*

Everyone expects me to do as well as the *12d/7*others, but if I do, it's no big deal, *12d/7*because they did it first. You never get *12d/7*anything new, either. I've got Bill's old *12d/7*robes, Charlie's old wand, and Percy's *12d/7*old rat. *12d/7*

Out of his jacket he pulls out a beaten-up, fat, grey rat *1a/8*(Scabbers). *1a/8*

RON WEASLEY (CONT’D) *12d/7*His name's Scabbers and he's useless, he *12d/7*hardly ever wakes up. *12d/7*

HARRY POTTER *12d/7*You must know loads of magic already. *1a/8*I've got loads to learn ... I bet. I bet *1a/8*I'm the worst in the class. *1a/8*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*You won't be. There's loads of people who *12d/7*come from Muggle families and they learn *12d/7*quick enough. *12d/7*

A smiling, dimpled woman emerges at the doorway, pushing a food*12d/7*trolley. *12d/7*

FOOD TROLLEY LADY *12d/7*Anything off the trolley, dears? *12d/7*

Harry leaps up, but Ron mutters something about sandwiches.*12d/7*Looking around, Harry is surprised and confused. *12d/7*

THE TROLLEY *12d/7*

The trolley is fulled with Bettie Bott's Every Flavor Beans,*12d/7*Drooble's Best Blowing Gum, Chocolate Frogs. Pumpkin Pasties,*12d/7*Cauldron Cakes and Licorice Wands. *12d/7*

A LITTLE LATER (AFTERNOON) *12d/7*

Harry and Ron eat their way through what looks like the whole*12d/7*trolley. Ron’s sandwiches lay forgotten. *12d/7*

HARRY POTTER *12d/7*What are these? *12d/7*

He holds up a packet of Chocolate Frogs. *12d/7*

HARRY POTTER (CONT’D) *12d/7*They're not really frogs, are they? *12d/7*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*No. But see what the card is. I'm missing *12d/7*Agrippa. Chocolate Frogs have cards, *12d/7*inside them to collect - famous witches *12d/7*and wizards. I've got about five hundred, *12d/7*but I haven't got Agrippa or Ptolemy. *12d/7*

While he talks Harry unwraps his Chocolate Frog and takes out his*12d/7*card, ‘Albus Dumbledore’, which shows Dumbledore’s name and*12d/7*picture. *12d/7*

HARRY POTTER *12d/7*So this is Dumbledore! *12d/7*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*Don't tell me you'd never heard of *12d/7*Dumbledore! *12d/7*

Harry turns it over and reads the back to himself. *12d/7*

HARRY POTTER *12d/7*Albus Dumbledore. Currently Headmaster of *12d/7*Hogwarts. Considered by many the greatest *12d/7*

wizard of modern times, Dumbledore is *12d/7*particularly famous for his defeat of the *12d/7*dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the *12d/7*discovery of the twelve uses of dragon's *12d/7*blood, and his work on alchemy with his *12d/7*partner, Nicolas Flamel. *12d/7*

Harry turns the card back over. Dumbledore is no longer in frame.*12d/7*HARRY POTTER (CONT’D) *12d/7*

He’s gone! *12d/7*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*Well, you can't expect him to hang around *12d/7*all day. He'll be back. *12d/7*

Harry notices Dumbledore comes back, smiling. *12d/7*

HARRY POTTER *12d/7*You know, the Muggle world, people just *12d/7*

stay put in photos. *12d/7*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*Do they? What, they don't move at all? *12d/7*Weird! *12d/7*

Knock, knock. Neville Longbottom appears at the door. *12d/7*

NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM *12d/7*Sorry, but have you seen a toad at all? *12d/7*

Harry and Ron shake their heads. *12d/7*

NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM (CONT’D) *12d/7*Yes. Well, if you see him... *12d/7*

Neville leaves. *12d/7*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*Don't know why he's so bothered. If I'd *12d/7*brought a toad I'd lose it as quick as I *12d/7*could. Mind you, I brought Scabbers, so I *12d/7*can't talk. *12d/7*

(They both look at *1a/8*Scabbers) *1a/8*

I tried to turn him yellow yesterday, but *12d/7*the spell didn't work. I'll show you, *12d/7*look... *12d/7*

He takes out his wand and Harry notices it is chipped in many*12d/7*places and that a bright white hair is almost sticking out. *12d/7*

But someone appears at the door, a bushy-haired someone who is*12d/7*already wearing her Hogwarts robes (HERMIONE GRANGER). *12d/7*

HERMIONE GRANGER *12d/7*Has anyone seen a toad? Neville's lost *12d/7*one. *12d/7*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*We've already told him we haven't seen *12d/7*

it. *12d/7*Hermione notices Ron’s wand. *12d/7*

HERMIONE GRANGER *12d/7*Oh, are you doing magic? Let's see it, *12d/7*then. *12d/7*

She sits down. *12d/7*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*Er - Sunshine, daisies, butter mellow, *12d/7*Turn this stupid, fat rat yellow. *12d/7*

He waves his wand and nothing happens. *12d/7*

HERMIONE GRANGER *12d/7*(Speaking fast) *12d/7*

Are you sure that's a real spell? Well, *12d/7*it's not very good, is it? I've tried a *12d/7*few simple spells just for practice and *12d/7*it 's a ll wor ke d fo r me . *12d/7*

Nobody in my family's magic at all, it *12d/7* was ever such a surprise when I got my *12d/7*letter, it's the very best school of *12d/7*

witchcraft there is, I've heard - I've *12d/7*learned all our course books by heart, of *12d/7*course, I just hope it will be enough - *12d/7*I'm Hermione Granger, by the way, who are *12d/7*you. *12d/7*

Harry and Ron both look, stunned, at each other. *12d/7*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*I’m Ron Weasley. *12d/7*

HARRY POTTER *12d/7*Harry Potter. *12d/7*

HERMIONE GRANGER *12d/7*

Are you really? I know all about you, of *12d/7*course - I got a few extra books for *12d/7*background reading, and you're in Modern *12d/7*Magical History and The Rise and Fall of *12d/7*the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events *12d/7*of the Twentieth Century. *12d/7*

HARRY POTTER *12d/7*Am I? *12d/7*

HERMIONE GRANGER *12d/7*Goodness, didn't you know, I'd have found *12d/7*

out everything I could if it was me. Do *12d/7*either of you know what house you'll be *12d/7*in? I've been asking around, and I hope *12d/7*I'm in Gryf findor, but I suppose *12d/7*Ravenclaw wouldn't be too bad ... Anyway, *12d/7*I'd better go and look for Neville's *12d/7*toad. *12d/7*

RON WEASLEY *12d/7*Gryffindor. Mum and Dad were in it too. I *12d/7*don't know what they'll say if I'm not. I *12d/7*don't suppose Ravenclaw would be too bad, *12d/7*but imagine if they put me in Slytherin. *12d/7*

HARRY POTTER (CONT’D) *1a/8*What? *1a/8*

RON WEASLEY *1a/8*You said You-Know-Who's name! I'd have *1a/8*thought you, of all people - *1a/8*

HARRY POTTER *1a/8*I'm not trying to be brave or anything, *1a/8*saying the name, I just never knew you *1a/8*shouldn't. *1a/8*

But their conversation is ended when three people appear at the*12d/7*

DRACO MALFOY *12d/7*Is it true? They're saying all down the *12d/7*train that Harry Potter's in t his *12d/7*compartment. *12d/7*

Draco looks to Harry, who looks to Crabbe and Goyle who look*12d/7*large enough to be bodyguards. *12d/7*

DRACO MALFOY (CONT’D) *12d/7*Oh, this is Crabbe and Goyle. And my *12d/7*

MINERVA MCGONAGALL *2/8*Welcome to Hogwarts. The start-of-term  *2/8*banquet will begin shortly, but before *2/8*you take your seats in the Great Hall, *2/8*

you will be sorted into your houses. The *2/8*Sorting is a very important ceremony *2/8*because, while you are here, your house *2/8*

will be something like your family within *2/8*Hogwarts. You will have classes with the *2/8*rest of your house, sleep in your house *2/8*dormitory, and spend free time in your *2/8*house common room. The four houses are *2/8*called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, *2/8*and Slytherin. *2/8*

Each house has its own noble history and *2/8*each has produced outstanding witches and *2/8*

wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your *2/8*triumphs will earn your house points, *2/8*

while any rulebreaking will lose house *2/8*points. At the end of the year, the house *2/8*

with the most points is awarded the house *2/8*cup, a great honor. I hope each of you *2/8*

will be a credit to whichever house *2/8*becomes yours. The Sorting Ceremony will *2/8*take place in a few minutes in front of *2/8*the rest of the school. I suggest you all *2/8*smarten yourselves up as much as you can *2/8*

while you are waiting. I shall return *2/8* when we are ready for you. Please wait *2/8*quietly. *2/8*

McGonagall also goes through the right hand doorway (to the Great *2/8*

RON WEASLEY *2/8*Some sort of test, I think. Fred said it *2/8*hurts a lot, but I think he was joking. *2/8*

Harry looks a bit scared at this prospect. Everyone is quiet, *2/8*except... *2/8*

HERMIONE GRANGER *2/8*I wonder which spell we’ll be tested on. *2/8*Maybe we’ll need to - *2/8*

But her eyes suddenly widen. Harry jumps and few people scream. *2/8*

Twenty ghosts, transparent and pearly white in colour, glide *2/8*thorough the wall the wall and through the marble staircase. *2/8*

FAT FRIAR *2/8*Forgive and forget, I say, we ought to *2/8*give him a second chance - *2/8*

NEARLY-HEADLESS NICK *2/8*'My dear Friar, haven't we given Peeves *2/8*all the chances he deserves? He gives us *2/8*all a bad name and you know, he's not *2/8*really even a ghost - *2/8*

MINERVA MCGONAGALL (CONT’D) *2/8*Harry Potter. *2/8*

The hall suddenly goes quiet, then erupts with conversations. *2/8*

Harry sits down on the stool and the hat is placed on his head. A *2/8*small voice can be heard. *2/8*

SORTING HAT (O.S.) *2/8*Hmm... Difficult. Very difficult. Plenty *2/8*of courage, I see. Not a bad mind either. *2/8*

There's talent, A my goodness, yes - and *2/8*a nice thirst to prove yourself, now *2/8*that's interesting... So where shall I *2/8*put you? *2/8*

With all his might, Harry thinks: *2/8*

HARRY POTTER (V.O.) *2/8*Not Slytherin... Not Slytherin... *2/8*

SORTING HAT (O.S.) *2/8*Not Slytherin, eh? Are you sure? You *2/8*

SORTING HAT (CONT’D) *2/8*(To everyone in the hall) *2/8*

Gryffindor! *2/8*

Everyone cheers. Harry looks to Ron as he passes the line of *2/8*first-years still to be sorted and sees him clapping, but looking *2/8*nervous. At the Gryffindor table, Ron’s brothers chant. *2/8*

GEORGE WEASLEY *2/8*We’ve got Potter! *2/8*

FRED WEASLEY *2/8*We’ve got Potter! *2/8*

Harry sits near to the ghost he saw earlier (Nearly-Headless *2/8*Nick) who pats him on the shoulder. Harry shivers as he does so. *2/8*
