Product overview
HP 1910 switches are advanced smart managed fixed-configuration Gigabit and Fast Ethernet switchesdesigned for small businesses in an easy-to-administer solution. The series has 8 gigabit models and 5Fast Ethernet models.
The Fast Ethernet (FE) models are : 8-, 24- and 48- 10/100 non-PoE models and 8-, 24-10/100 PoE+models. The Fast Ethernet models come with additional 2 combo uplink ports . All HP 1910 modelssupport rack mounting or desktop operation. Customizable features include basic layer 2 features like
VLANs and link aggregation as well as advanced features such as Layer 3 static routing, IPv6, ACLs andSpanning Tree Protocols. HP 1910 switches come with a lifetime warranty covering the unit, fans, andpower supplies.This product includes the latest designs in silicon technology that makes the series one ofthe most power-efficient in the market.

Preparing for installation
Safety recommendationsTo avoid any equipment damage or bodily injury caused by improper use, read the following safetyrecommendations before installation. The recommendations do not cover every possible hazardouscondition.
Do not store the switch without power too long due to the storage requirement for the electrolyticcapacitor in the switch.
Take proper anti-interference measures because the switch might cause radio interference as aclass-A product.
Before cleaning the switch, remove all power cords from the switch. Do not clean the switch with wet
cloth or liquid.
Do not place the switch near water or in a damp environment. Prevent water or moisture fromentering the switch chassis.
Do not place the switch on an unstable case or desk. The switch might be severely damaged in caseof a fall.
Ensure proper ventilation of the equipment room and keep the air inlet and outlet vents of the switchfree of obstruction.
Make sure that the operating voltage is in the required range.
To avoid electrical shocks, do not open the chassis while the switch is operating or when the switchis just powered off.
The accessories shipped with the switch, including but not limited to power cables, are intendedonly for the switch. Please do not use them for other products.
Examining the installation siteThe HP 1910 switches must be used indoors. You can mount your switch in a rack or on a workbench, butmake sure:
Adequate clearance is reserved (at least 5 cm or 1.97 in) at the air inlet and exhaust vents forventilation.
The rack or workbench has a good ventilation system.
The rack or workbench is sturdy enough to support the switch and its accessories.
The rack or workbench is well earthed.
To ensure normal operation and long service life of your switch, install it in an environment that meets therequirements described in the following subsections.
Temperature/humidity
Maintain appropriate temperature and humidity in the equipment room.

Lasting high relative humidity can cause poor insulation, electricity creepage, mechanical propertychange of materials, and metal corrosion.
Lasting low relative humidity can cause washer contraction and ESD and bring problems includingloose captive screws and circuit failure.
High temperature can accelerate the aging of insulation materials and significantly lower the
reliability and lifespan of the switch.For the temperature and humidity requirements of different switch models, see "Appendix B Technicalspecifications.
Cleanness
Dust buildup on the chassis may result in electrostatic adsorption, which causes poor contact of metalcomponents and contact points, especially when indoor relative humidity is low. In the worst case,electrostatic adsorption can cause communication failure.

The equipment room must also meet strict limits on salts, acids, and sulfides to eliminate corrosion andpremature aging of components, as shown in Table 4.

EMI
All electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources, from outside or inside of the switch and applicationsystem, adversely affect the switch in a conduction pattern of capacitance coupling, inductance coupling,electromagnetic wave radiation, or common impedance (including the grounding system) coupling. Toprevent EMI, take the following actions:
If AC power is used, use a single-phase three-wire power receptacle with protection earth (PE) tofilter interference from the power grid.
Keep the switch far away from radio transmitting stations, radar stations, and high-frequencydevices.
Use electromagnetic shielding, for example, shielded interface cables, when necessary.
Route interface cables only indoors to prevent signal ports from getting damaged by overvoltage or
overcurrent caused by lightning strikes.

Installing the switch
The HP 1910 switch can be installed in a 19-inch rack or on a workbench.
WARNING!
Before installing or moving the switch, remove the power cord.
Mounting the switch in a 19-inch rack withmounting brackets
To install the switch with mounting brackets:
1. Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap and make sure it makes good skin contact and is wellgrounded.
2. Ensure the rack is securely grounded and stands stably.
3. Fix the mounting brackets on the sides of the front panel with screws.
NOTE:
The mounting brackets are used only for fixing the switch instead of bearing the switch weight. A holderon the rack is used to bear the switch weight.

4. Place the switch on a holder in the rack, and push the switch in along the guide rails until the ovalholes in the brackets aligns with the mounting holes in the rack posts.
5. Fix the mounting brackets to the rack posts with screws.

Mounting the switch on a workbench
IMPORTANT:
Ensure good ventilation and 10 cm (3.9 in) of clearance around the chassis for heat dissipation.
Avoid placing heavy objects on the switch.
To mount the switch on a workbench:
1. Check that the workbench is sturdy and well grounded.
2. Place the switch with bottom up, and clean the round holes in the chassis bottom with dry cloth.
3. Attach the rubber feet to the four round holes in the chassis bottom.
4. Place the switch with upside up on the workbench.

Connecting cablesConnecting network cable
Use crossover cable or straight through cable to connect a PC or other network devices to the Ethernetport of the switch.

Installing SFP transceiver module and connecting optical fiber
CAUTION:
Hold the SFP transceiver module by its two sides when you install or remove the module. Do not touch
the golden finger of the module. Remove the optical fiber, if any, from a transceiver module before installing it.
To install an SFP transceiver module and connect the optical fiber:
1. Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap and make sure it makes good skin contact and is wellgrounded.
2. Pivot the clasp of the module up. Holding the module, gently push the module into the slot until ithas firm contact with the slot (when the top and bottom spring tabs catch in the slot).
3. Remove the protection covers from the optical fiber and the transceiver module, and connect theLC connector of the optical fiber to the transceiver module.
NOTE:
Keep the protection covers for future use.

Connecting the console cable
WARNING!
Do not connect or remove the console cable to or from the PC if the switch has been powered on.
To connect a terminal, for example, a PC, to the switch:
1. Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap and make sure it makes good skin contact and is wellgrounded.
2. Plug the DB-9 female connector of the console cable to the serial port of the PC.
3. Connect the RJ-45 connector to the console port of the switch.

NOTE:
To disconnect the console cable, plug out the RJ-45 connector of the cable and then the DB-9 femaleconnector.
Connecting the AC power cord
To connect the AC power cord:
1. Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap and make sure it makes good skin contact and is wellgrounded.
2. Make sure the correct power source is used.
3. Connect one end of the AC power cord to the AC-input power receptacle on the switch.
Figure 21shows the power cord connection on the switch.
4. Connect the other end of the AC power cord to the AC power outlet.
5. Check the Power LED. If it is ON, it means the power connection is correct.

Verifying the installationAfter you complete the installation, verify that:
There is enough space for heat dissipation around the switch, and the rack or workbench is stable.
The grounding cable is securely connected.The correct power source is used.
The power cords are properly connected.
All the interface cables are cabled indoors. If any cable is routed outdoors, verify that the socketstrip with lightning protection and lightning arresters for network ports have been properlyconnected.

Accessing the switch for the first time
Setting up the configuration environmentThe first time you access the switch you must use a console cable to connect a console terminal, forexample, a PC, to the console port on the switch.

Console cable
A console cable is an 8-core shielded cable, with a crimped RJ-45 connector at one end for connectingto the console port of the switch, and a DB-9 female connector at the other end for connecting to theserial port on the console terminal.

Connection procedure
To connect a terminal, for example, a PC, to the switch:
1. Plug the DB-9 female connector of the console cable to the serial port of the PC.
2. Connect the RJ-45 connector to the console port of the switch.
NOTE:
Identify the mark on the console port and make sure that you are connecting to the correct port.
The serial ports on PCs do not support hot swapping. If the switch has been powered on, connect theconsole cable to the PC before connecting to the switch, and when you disconnect the cable, firstdisconnect from the switch.
Setting terminal parametersTo configure and manage the switch, you must run a terminal emulator program on the console terminal.
The following are the required terminal settings:

To set terminal parameters, for example, on a Windows XP HyperTerminal:1. Select Start>All Programs>Accessories> Communications> HyperTerminal.

Appendix A Troubleshooting
This chapter lists some issues that you may encounter while using and managing the switch, withcorrective action to take.
If you encounter an issue that is not listed here and you cannot solve it, please contact your localtechnical support representative.

Power LED off
1. Verify that the correct power source is used and the power cordsare properly connected.
2. Verify that the power source side provides power supply normally.
LAN interface LED off
1.
Verify that the network cable is properly connected to the networkport of the switch.
2. Plug the two ends of a network cable into two network ports of theswitch. If the port LEDs are on, it indicates that the network cable iswell. Otherwise, please replace the network cable.
Unable to log on to the Webinterface of the HP 1910 switch
1. Use the pingcommand to check the network connectivity:
a. Ping 127.0.0.1 to verify that TCP/IP has been installed.
b. Ping the management IP address of the switch to verify that themanagement PC is connected to the switch. If not, perform thefollowing check:
For local configuration, verify that the IP addresses of themanagement PC and the switch are in the same subnet.
For remote configuration, verify that the route from themanagement PC to the switch is reachable.
2. Check the LED status to verify that the cables are connectedproperly.
3. Verify that the switch's port that connects to the management PC isenabled and belongs to the management VLAN.
4. Verify that the Web browser is not configured with proxy or dial-upconnection.
5. Disable and then enable the local network after you complete localnetwork settings.
