#e o$ering given for the sake of God are [meant] only for

the poor and the needy, and1. those who are in charge thereof, and2. those whose hearts are to be won over, and3. for freeing of people from bondage, and4. [for] those over burdened by debt, and5. for [every struggle] in God’s cause, and6. for the wayfarers;7.

[#is is] an ordinance from God, and God is all knowing, wise.”

-- Surah At-Taubah 9:60

MPAC’s work is applicable in the following zakat categories:

#e third category contemporarily applies to the public relations work that is done in building bridges, and in winning over the hearts and minds of decision makers who have a be%er understanding of Islam.

#e fourth category is justi"ed by MPAC’s advocacy on freedom related issues, examples of which are our work on Palestine and Kashmir.

#e sixth category as indicated by a majority of jurists is not limited to the issue of physical struggle, but for every e$ort to establish Islam and defend the rights of all. Our work in "ghting against discrimination of immigrants, and lobbying the US Treasury Department to unfreeze assets from Muslim charitable organizations, while standing "rmly against those who would like to tarnish Islam, and marginalize Muslims are all examples of this work.

#e seventh category contemporarily refers to the problems of the homeless and refugees, at home and abroad. MPAC has consistently lobbied for an end to homelessness, and the right of return of all refugees.

Understanding this verse through the lens of our current time and place, zakat should be used to:

directly support the poor and needy1. alleviate the administration cost of the 2. administration of income and expenditureprovide for public relations campaigns to 3. win the hearts and minds of others and to neutralize the animosity against Islam in the media, entertainment industry, think tanks, and in academiahelp liberate the enslaved and oppressed in 4. all their contemporary manifestationshelp those who are crushed under debt 5. (almost all African countries are under this category).for every e$ort to serve the cause of God 6. in establishing justice, emanating mercy, and guarding the freedom and dignity of all humankinds.help those who have been deprived of the 7. dignity and security of a home (e.g. homeless, refugees, and the seekers of political asylum)
