away the dirt of old year and welcome the new year. It’s a special entertainment activity for the Chinese. On New Year’s Eve, people usually stay up late. On that day there is also a big television program named Spring Festival Party, hosted by

go to visit their relatives, and receive a red packet for the best wishes. People also stick the antithetical couplet on the sides of the door at

antithetical couplet. These all mean the best wishes for the next year.

FoodsIn the New Year Festival, there are a lot of tradi-tional foods that hold long history. In the lunar thirty, all the members in the family stay togeth-er and have dinner. People prepare the best food. For example, in the northern part of china, people always eat dumplings in the New Year Festival because the pronunciation of dumpling is similar to the “change to new” in Chinese. Also the shape of dumpling is like the ancient silver/-gold ingot. When people are cooking the dump-ling, they always put some clean coins into it. When people are eating these dumplings,

This resembles good tidings of wealth in the next year. People also eat the New Year’s Cakes. The New Year’s Cakes are named “NianGao” in Chinese which means to be higher in the next year.In our home, we usually prepared lots of stu before the festival. During the lunar thirty’s

table. We hope we can be worthy in the New

relatives. We organize all the family members into one place for chatting and watch the Spring

Festival Party. We use our best emotion and best behaviors to celebrate our New Year Festival.

CELEBRATING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING

King fought for equality, not only for African-Americans, but for workers who were placed in the lower class because of their economic status. His profession as a pastor led him to become the wonderful, moving speak-er he was when he delivered his “I Have A Dream Speech,” and his eloquence soothed listeners while demanding their attention.

nation he was only 26, and was promoting equality among races. The worldwide percep-tion of race forced him to step up and eventu-ally alter society. Although he was determined to erase racial boundaries, it was race that forced him, among other African-American leaders such as Malcolm X and Thurgood Marshall, to become exceptional. It forced them to take a stand for what they believed in. It forced them to change the world.

Hyde students and faculty spent January 20th the way it was supposed to be spent. Not by sleeping in and playing with friends, but reminiscing on who Martin Luther King Jr. was and his change on today’s society. There is no school on this holiday, not so students can take a break from thinking for a day, but so they can instead think about King and be thankful that he risked his life for something greater than himself. He put this movement above his own well-being, not only by donat-ing his Nobel Peace Prize earnings, but by giving over 2,500 public speeches despite the constant death threats he received. In the end, although King’s life was abruptly ended, the movement is still active today, and that is what King would have wanted.

HYDE’S TOP TEN EVENTS OF 2013

Hyde.edu

Congratulations everyone, we made it! We've survived 365 days of this year, which really is quite an accomplishment when you think of everything that has happened this past year. We've survived a government shut-down (and the seniors survived the disap-pointment in realizing that the world was not over and yes, they still had to do their ethics homework); we've stayed sane through being constantly asked "WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY;" we've accepted the fact that Miley Cyrus really doesn't like clothes or performances that don't involve her twerking; we've instagrammed, facebooked, vined, tumbled (tumblr'd?), and tweeted our little hearts out about every little

We've managed the stress from the piles of work and the weight of responsibilities, and most importantly, we've braved through the mistakes, the dumb decisions, the uncertainty, and the curveballs life has thrown at us. I would say that 2013 has certainly kept us busy. In the considerably smaller world of Hyde Woodstock, we've had our fair share of memo-rable moments during the school year so far. So, just to refresh your memory, here are the top 10 memories, in no particular order, of 2013.

The Halloween Haunted Trail: I'm sure everyone who went on the trail remembers that experience very clearly. With the evil genius of Mr. Jenkins and some students, the cross country trail was made into a terrifying walk that involved screaming, running, and Mr. Jenkins chasing people with a chainsaw. The whole running through the woods in the dark with a fully functional chainsaw really does not sound safe, but it sure was eective.

The Dodgeball Tournament: The fun committee pulled together an awesome dodgeball tournament this fall, held in the Krebs Gymnasium. This event may have been an excuse for Wyand to use his superhuman pegging powers and not getting in trouble for hurting someone, but there weren't many complaints among the great memories that were taken away from that night. Though many competitors walked away with big red marks, everyone who attended had a great time competing against friends and teachers.

Fall Family Weekend PA Show: Hyde's students and faculty showed o their talent in the PA show with a capella and dance perfor-mances by students and faculty, as well as a hilarious dance from the Fair Share Committee. The faculty dance to "Thriller" and the zom-bie-themed Fair Share dance, in which Mr. Felt gave an impressive performance as Dracula,

upcoming Halloween festivities.

HYDE’S TOP TEN EVENTS OF 2013

Fall Family Weekend Pep Rally: The pep -

ble moments of the year as the Wolf Pack

joined by their families, to show some Hyde Pride and get pumped for the family weekend games. The teams had some pretty interesting cheers, getting us all energized and ready to

games.

The Reopening of the Wolf Den Cafe: Thanks to Devin Peterson and student sta members, the Wolf Den Cafe reopened and now supplies the Hyde community with snacks during the free time between meals.

-cant dierence on campus since it has drawn many more students to the lounge, making it one of the most popular places for people to come together and hang out with friends.

The Grand Opening of Krebs Gym: This

was a gift from the parents of the 2013 graduat-ing class. The whole school attended an open-

were made by coaches and players.

First Release of the Newspaper: Maybe including this in the top 10 moments of 2013 is a bit biased, but many would agree that the newspaper is a great edition to Hyde's commu-nity. It is an easily accessible way to share fun memories with members of the Hyde communi-ty, as well as parents and friends outside of Hyde. Lots of students were surprised to see themselves featured in the newspaper, and it is also a great way to get to know the new students and faculty who are featured in each edition.

Football Game vs Bath: As this was probably the most important game of the football season, and since we also won this game, the last football game against Bath is

moments of the year. Lots of fans turned up to support our team with signs and sideline support as we watched our team win against our sister school.

School Meeting on Overcoming Obstacles: One of the most important parts of a student's experience at Hyde are the school meetings, where many important topics are discussed and looked at in order to improve our community as a whole. The meeting concerning overcoming

reasons; we were all very moved by the greatly inspirational story of Team Hoyt, a father who ran many marathons with his disabled son so his

son could feel like he could do the impossible, as well as many other stories of amazing willpower and strength. I think what possibly made this meeting have such an impact was the openness and genuine emotion that everyone showed while sharing life experienc-es of setbacks and the struggles to get back up on their feet. Mr. Felt's speech about the challenges of sobriety really inspired so many people in our community, and the heartfelt emotion he showed while speaking got through to many and really moved the audi-ence.

far. Many were skeptical when Mr. Labeef's Discovery Group announced that in return for donations, Labeef would shave certain parts of his head/face. Of course we were determined to see the mystery face under all that facial hair, and sure enough, when Mr. Labeef shaved it all o and was left short-haired and clean-shaven,

had fun convincing everyone that he was a new student and maybe a little less fun trying to convince everyone that he actually was Mr. Labeef.

The number one movie for 2013 is “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” partially due to its incredible plot structure; the twists and turns made the movie interesting. The Hunger Games grossed $158 million dollars on open-ing weekend.

Dylan’s number one movie of 2013: “Prisoners.” With a cast consisting of Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Mellissa Leo, how could this movie not be a hit? The director kept the audience intrigued throughout the whole movie with an advanced plot line that made people ask themselves "what will happen next?"even after

Number one song of 2013: “Royals” by Lorde. The message helps people hear about the other side of life, where people are not rich and struggle to make ends meet. The voice of Ella Yelich-O’Connor’s number one single kept people intrigued with the wild beats in the background.

Dylan’s number one song of 2013: “Get Lucky” by Daft punk. The combination of Pharrel Williams and Daft Punk made beats that felt as if you were in the 1970s; it also had a modern rhythm that made it appealing to listeners.

Number one viral video of 2013: “Harlem Shake.” The video originated from a group on YouTube called the Sunny Coast Skate. Many people after this started creating their own Harlem Shake videos. The most famous Harlem Shake videos are the Miami heat basketball team, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon crew and the Norwegian Army. What is a Harlem Shake? It starts o with the song Harlem Shake by Baauer, then a bass drop followed by the sound of a lion roaring.

In the video there is usually one person danc-ing for around 15 seconds while other people are doing their own thing. Then the bass drops and it changes to everyone dancing, possibly

Number one news story of 2013: Tie between Snowden Leaks and Boston Marathon Bomb-ing. The Snowden Leaks showed the world the secrecy of the government, and made people more conscious of what they say on the phone. The United States was tapping into

could tap into anyone’s phones which was an invasion of privacy. Some people wanted Snowden dead, some thought he was a hero; for now he is in Russia in an asylum hiding from the United States Government. The Boston Marathon was a tragic day in American History. Two terrorists on Patriot's Day explod-ed two bombs at around the 4th hour into the marathon when they believed the most people would be running and watching. This is usually a day for celebration but was changed to fear and breach of security. In the end, 3 people were killed including an 8-year-old boy
