How you can fundraise for St George’s Hospital

Charity

Meet GraceSt George’s Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital are two places where incredible things happen every single day.

The charity’s mission is to raise and use

charitable funds to benefit patients, support

healthcare staff and improve facilities within

the St George’s family.

The money raised by you is vital in helping

St George’s Hospital Charity make a real

difference to the lives of patients and staff

across the hospitals and services that are

provided in the community, all year round.

We rely on fundraising to continue our

valuable work. A significant proportion of this

comes from events and activities organised by

loyal and hard-working supporters like you.

Start fundraising for St George’s Hospital Charity today!

Why we need your support

The beauty of fundraising is that you can do

virtually any activity to raise money for us - the

choice is yours!

To help you decide, we’ve filled this booklet

full of ideas, inspirational stories and examples

of events, as well as advice and tips to get you

started on your fundraising.

Remember, our fundraising team is here to

offer you support and guidance every step of

the way.

How you can help

Why we fundraise...

❝ I enjoyed every minute of my fundraising for St George’s Hospital Charity as it is a cause that is so close to my heart.

The charity have supported me so much over the last year, and that is how I was able to raise such an incredible amount of money that will make a real difference.

The marathon itself was one of the hardest, but most amazing and rewarding things, I will ever do in my life. I was in agony afterwards, but every ache was worth it. ❞

Grace was involved in a serious car

accident, breaking 28 bones amongst

other life-threatening injuries.

Following two years of intensive

treatment and rehabilitation at St

George’s and Queen Mary’s hospitals,

Grace ran the London Marathon for us,

raising over £14,000.

How the money you raise helps

their feelings, or simply having something to enjoy.

❝ It was a given that we would raise funds for such a fantastic hospital and ward that made Zoe’s time and recovery so much less stressful than it would have been, and that is thanks to all the staff. I can’t thank you all enough for saving my daughter. ❞

The Big Orange Fun Day

Why we fundraise...

Lisa organised ‘The Big Orange Fun Day’ to raise money for the Ruth Myles Unit at

St George’s Hospital after her daughter Zoe was diagnosed with leukaemia. With the help

of friends and family (pictured below), Lisa organised a raffle, fancy dress parade, arts and

crafts, tombola, BBQ and more, raising a phenomenal £11,200.

Keep it legal and safe

LICENCESAsk our fundraising team, or your Local Authority, whether or not you need to obtain any

special licences (e.g. public entertainment, collection or alcohol licences) relating to your

planned event. Leave plenty of time to arrange these. If you are holding your event in a

public space, you must have permission from the council or landowner.

RAFFLESIf you hold a small raffle on the day of your activity you do not need a licence, so long as all

tickets sales and the draw itself take place during the main event. Tickets must be sold for

the same price with no discounts applied. You must make it clear who is running the raffle.

INSURANCEPlease remember you are responsible for the activity and St George’s Hospital cannot accept

liability for any fundraising activity or event you undertake. If you are planning an activity

that involves the general public you’ll need to budget for public liability insurance, which

can be obtained from any insurer. If you are holding the event in a venue which has public

liability insurance (such as a village hall or pub) check they have the appropriate insurance

and that it covers your activity.

RISK ASSESSMENTSIdentify any hazards and assess any risks at your activity that you’ll need to consider. Ensure

you have adequate first aid cover available for the scale of your activity. If you’re not sure,

check with your local council.

UNDER 18sIf you are under 18, your parent/guardian is responsible for you in England and Wales. Please

show them this booklet and make sure they are happy with what you’ve chosen to do.

PUBLICITY MATERIALWhen you are writing about your event you need to say it is being held ‘in aid of St George’s

Hospital Charity.’ Please contact us if you wish to use our logo on your own materials.

Other ways to support usBeing a supporter of St George’s Hospital Charity can take many forms. Here are some alternative ways

to support our vital work.

LOTTERYYou can win £25,000 and many other prizes every week by joining the St George’s Hospital Charity

Lottery.

For just £1 per week you’ll be allocated a six digit lottery number which is yours for as long as you

play. 50p of every £1 goes directly to St George’s Hospital Charity. The remaining 50p will be used to

provide prizes and cover administration costs.

You can join via Unity Lottery online at

https://www.stgeorgeshospitalcharity.org.uk/hospital-lottery/hospital-lottery

or call 0870 050 9240 (please quote St George’s Hospital Charity).

You must be aged 16 or over to participate.

GIFTS IN KINDHelping us to help the hospitals doesn’t always have to involve giving money. We welcome gifts in

kind for patients that help provide a little extra - helping staff, too.

The Playroom at St George’s Hospital specially welcomes such gifts. You can donate toys or

vouchers for Amazon or Argos so staff can purchase items which are most in need.

What the children love:

c Brand-new or nearly-new toys are preferred

c Toys which are wipeable (for infection control) and

are in very good condition

c Board games and jigsaws

c We can only accept soft/stuffed toys which are brand

new. These will be given to patients as presents that

they can take home with them

c We accept Play-Doh (brand new and sealed)

We can not use:

c Second-hand soft toys

c Board games and jigsaws with missing parts or

broken pieces

c Items that cannot be wiped clean

Please send your gifts to: St George’s Hospital Charity, St George’s Hospital, Blackshaw Road, Tooting, London SW17 0QT

Please make sure that you include a note with your details, name, address, email and phone number

so that we can write to you to thank you, and tell you how your donation has made a real difference to

the hospital.

GIFTS IN WILLSLeaving a gift in your will is a valuable and lasting way that you can support us – and it’s easier

than you may think.

Whether you’re making a new will, or if you already have a will and would like to consider changing it

to incorporate a gift to St George’s Hospital Charity, you can find a solicitor or will writer in your area to

provide advice and assistance online:

http://www.rememberacharity.org.uk/making-a-will/find-a-professional/

If you would like to speak to someone about leaving a gift in your will to St George’s Hospital Charity

get in touch via [email protected] or call us on 020 8725 4522.

CELEBRATE A LIFECelebrate the life of a loved one by raising funds to support our work.

Many people choose to commemorate their loved one by raising funds in their memory. There are

different ways to do this:

COLLECTIONS

You may want to encourage people to make a donation in lieu of flowers at a funeral. Some people

also choose to have envelopes available to make a donation.

We can support you by providing donation envelopes and some wording about the area of the

Hospital in which you are supporting. Email us to request envelopes at [email protected]

SET UP AN ONLINE FUNDRAISING PAGE

You can also fundraise online in memory of a loved one by setting up a personalised online

giving page. You can make your page at Justgiving or through Virgin Money Giving’s Someone Special page.

Fundraising through these online sites is quick and simple for you and your contacts. You can also use

the site to upload photographs and memories.

https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/giving/someone-special/

https://www.justgiving.com/

A GIFT IN CELEBRATIONIf you have a special occasion coming up such as birthday or wedding, you could ask friends and family

to make a donation to St George’s Hospital Charity instead of gifts.

You can do this online through Justgiving or you can ask friends and family to give cash donations. We

can provide you with some donation envelopes if needed. Please do get in touch and let us know.

MAKE A REGULAR GIVING DONATIONYou can set up a regular donation by clicking on our web site Donate button, followed by Regular Donation. Next, go to Make a monthly donation and follow the simple instructions.

https://www.justgiving.com/stgeorgescf/donate/

You can also contact our office on 020 8725 4522 and we can send you a standing order form along

with a freepost envelope.

❝ Having retired from full time employment I felt as though it would be good to give something to the community I live in.

It’s been a great experience. I have been involved in various fundraising activities from participating in carol service collections at the Royal Albert Hall to cheering runners in the London Marathon.

Part of my time is spent in the fundraising office where there is always something new and challenging to keep me occupied. ❞
