    How to write the Tibetan script

    Introduction

    T i betan bl ock-l etter scri pt (gzab ma), general l y known as the headed, dbu-can [pron: "u-chen"] scri pt, i s tradi ti onal l ywritten using a hand-made bamboo or reed pen cut at an angl e. Steel ni bbed cal l i graphi c pens desi gned for l eft-ha nded wri ters of Roman i tal i c scri pt are sl anted at asuitable angle for a right-handed pers on to use when wri ti ng the T i betan dbu-chan s c r i p t .

    T o produce the proper thi ckness of h ori zontal strokes, the wi dth of the pen ni b shoul d be about 1/12th the hei ght of l etter ka.

    T he pen i s hel d between the thumb and i ndex fi ngers so that, as you wri te, the pen may be rotated to obtai n the proptansi ti on between thi ck and thi n strokes. T he other fi ngers are drawn up i nto a fi st, though some peopl e extend thel i ttl e fi nger to form a surface for the hand to rest on and provi de greater stabi l i ty. Hori zontal strokes are wri tten from l

    to ri ght and verti cal strokes from the top down.

    T he top ("head") strokes of T i betan l etters shoul d al i gn wi th each other. T hi s top or head (mgo) stroke i s al ways drafi rst. It shoul d ei ther resembl e a rope that has been cut di agonal l y at each end as i n the exampl es bel ow or be di ago

    at one end and bow-shaped at the other.

    Other strokes are executed proceedi ng from top to bottom and l eft to ri ght.

    Shoulder (dpung) strokes shoul d descend at an angl e, curvi ng from l eft to ri ght, starti ng thi n and i ncreasi ng i nt h i c k n e s s .

    Abdomi nal (sbo) cross strokes shoul d resembl e the bl ade of a curved kni fe or a crescent moon, thi ck i n themi ddl e and thi n at both ends.
