In papers describing work on animals or humans, has the workbeen approved by the appropriate ethics committee? Avoid criticising the paper because it does not do what you mighthave done. J udge it on its own merits.

Theory: Is the theory sufficiently sound and supported by the evidence? Isit testable? Is it preferable to competing theories?

Ethics:

Reasoning: Are the logic, arguments, inferences and interpretationsappropriate? Are counter-arguments or contrary evidence takeninto account and discussed?

Remember that papers from overseas authors can be a special case. Here, ifthere are difficulties in the writing, you will have to concentrate initially on the

content and not let such difficulties cloud your judgment. If you think that thepaper is interesting and worthwhile, then you might either make suggestionsthen and there about the writing, or indicate to the editor that the paper mightrequire careful copy-editing ata laterdate, if it is accepted.

Try to help the author(s) to improve the paper. If the authors are, say, American

and they include no references to relevant British work (or vice versa) it mightbe helpful to say so and to give one or two easily accessible references. Ifyou do suggest the need for additional references, always give the full citations.Nothing is more infuriating for an author than to be told by a referee that youhave omittedkeystudies butnotto be told whattheyare!

Complete your report as quickly as you can, but do not rush it. The editor will beindebted to you if you respond promptly, and so will the author(s). It is appallinghow long some referees take to do the job. Indeed, as noted in Chapter 4.3, tocounter this, the J ournal of Interferon & Cytokine Research has started to payits referees for speedy replies. Keep the content of the manuscript and yourreport confidential, and do not cite such privileged information in anything that

you are writing.

Writing a journal paper can be a difficult process,

but breaking it down into manageable tasks can

make it a very routine task.

Often, different languages and cultures write in

different styles and with different organization

Papers Format

In formulating the outline it is important to know that most engineering orscience journal papers have a well-accepted general format. Each of the

following sections are included, usually also in this order, though specific

papers may disguise them under different section titles that relate closer

to the actual contents of each section. These sections are

The Abstract of a paper

The abstract is a single or two paragraph that

precedes the paper and summarizes the content.

Many times, the abstract will be published by itself

in an index to the paper and often only the words inthe abstract can be searched using library databases;

hence, the abstract is a critical element of the

research paper.

It is shorter than the summary and conclusions

section of the main paper and is less of an outline

than the closing paragraph of the introduction.

IntroductionFirst paragraph:

start with a broad statement and become more detailed until finallyidentifying the specific problem that the paper addresses.

The purpose of the first paragraph is to interest the reader in the

paper, to clearly identify for the reader what the paper will address,and to quickly bring the reader to the edge of knowledge in the field

the paper addresses.

The paragraph should end with the general problem addressed by

the paper. The next sentences of the introduction narrow the topic.

Introduction

Middle paragraphs:

Functioning as the literature review part.

The beginning of the literature review should cite the mostimportant historical contributions that build the foundation to

the topic the paper will extend.

The goal is not to cite everything, as in a review paper, but tocite the seminal contributions that directly lead to the problemthe paper addresses.

The remaining paragraphs should focus on the state-of-the-artknowledge base and the significant differences between whathas already been published and the new contribution that yourpaper is presenting.

Middle Paragraph Sample

(Literature Review)

The sediment phase is treated as a continuous medium in Eulerian coupling models.

However, its constitutive law is different from that of the clear water. An Eulerian model

expresses the bed-load transport, if the bottom shear stress is small. This model,

nevertheless, sidesteps probabilistic characteristics involving the motion of sediment

particles. Significant deficiencies are, therefore, associated with Eulerian models at high

bottom shear stresses, where such a probabilistic nature becomes important. Among

others, Kobayashi and Seo (1985), Bakker and van Kesteren (1986), Asano (1990), Dong

and Zhang (2002), and Hsu et al. (2003) have contributed to the Eulerian-Eulerian

approach. However, the sediment interparticle forces were estimated based on Bagnolds

(1954) relations in a simple shear flow system. Alternatively, Jenkins and Hanes (1998) and

Hsu et al. (2004) employed the kinetic theory of granular flow to consider interparticle

forces of dense sediment motion. Most of the aforementioned studies assumed clear-

water conditions or oneway coupling approach, i.e., it was assumed that the fluid forces

act only on the sediment particles/phase, while forces acting on the fluid due to the

interaction with the sediment phase were neglected.

The Methodology of a Journal Paper

This section should tell the reader clearly how the resultswere obtained. They should also make adequate referenceto accepted methods and identify differences.

Describe all of the techniques used to obtain the results in

a separate, objective Methods section .

In the case of a paper that develops both an numericalmodel and laboratory results, it is common to writeseparate methods sections for each.

At the end of the methods sections, the reader should beable to form an opinion about the quality of the results tobe presented in the remaining sections.

The Results

Main purpose of the results is to provide the data from your

study so that other researchers can draw their ownconclusions and understand fully the basis for your

conclusions.

Where applicable, results should be illustrated in terms ofnon-dimensional variables.

The results section and discussion section allow the most

flexibility in terms of organization and content.

A common format for the results section is to present a seriesof figures and to describe them in detail through the text.

Often the results are combined with the discussion section inthe research works, hence there should be a clear distinction

between a result and discussion.

The Discussion To interpret the results to reach the main

conclusions of the paper

This section allows you to highlight theconclusions you think are important.

Most of the experts reading your paper willdraw their own conclusions anyhow.

Often writers will combine the discussion andresults sections to avoid repetition and so

that they can give their conclusions parallel

with the results.

The Conclusions

The summary and conclusions section tells the reader whathas already been read and draws the important conclusions;

hence, keep it short and make it as specific as possible.

If the reader wants to know specifically what aspects of aproblem your paper will address, he will often read the

introduction and then the summary and conclusions section.

It is important that all of the significant findings aresummarized and united in the significant conclusions.

It is important to remember that this paragraph should notpresent new information.

This section is longer than the abstract and generally includes

more specific conclusions.

The acknowledgments are given at the end of a paper andshould at a minimum mention the sources of funding that

contributed to the paper.
