For years I had barely any Pinterest Strategy (only pinning from my website) and was getting about 1000 website sessions per month from Pinterest.

Within 3 weeks my traffic had increased 3 times (from 1K to 3K sessions for the month). And within 6 weeks my traffic had increased 5 times (to 5K sessions for the month).

This is when I had 2 pieces of content go ‘viral’ … with over 104K sessions in the next 2 months. All that traffic turned into email subscribers and some buyers of my products.

That is how I know that this Pinterest strategy works. Plus also the chance of content to go ‘viral’ is very cool.

It is where your target market are hanging out. It is a social media platform that is also a visual gallery or portfolio of your work and should be part of your online marketing strategy.

Spending 10 minutes per day or an hour per week can reap big rewards for your sweet business in regards to more website traffic, cake inquiries and orders.

10 Steps for Pinterest

1. Create business Pinterest account (not a personal one).

o Convert personal account to business o Personal is different (separate) to a business o Whether you are starting a Pinterest account for the first time or converting

your account to a business one the process is easy.

2. Add ‘Pin it’ button to your website.

o Make your website (& images) pinnable for anyone visiting your website.

3. Add chrome extension and pin anywhere on the web.

By having a Pin it button in your chrome browser, it give you the added functionality to pin from anywhere on the web. For example you are on someone’s website and you want to pin that recipe and they don’t have a Pin it button available, you can pin using the chrome extension.

4. Pin all images from your website to your boards.

5. Create long Pinterest pins.

The loooong Pinterest pins take up a log more of newsfeed (more prime location).

Makes the images more likely to be clicked, liked and repined.

Aiming for 800px wide X 2000px long.

6. Optimise pins

You want high quality photos (minimum 735 px wide), picture title & description SEO keyword rich (200 characters), add website or logo to photo, give CTA, create long Pinterest pin as well!

7. Aim for 50-70 Pinterest boards.

Optimum number is 50-70 boards total

8. Pin daily 30 pins (minimum).

A pin is when you pin from somewhere on the internet for the first time. A re-pin is when you pin from Pinterest.

50/50 ratio between own re-pins and others pins

Re-pin your most popular

Daily pinning and repining

Pinning at different times of day (use scheduling tool like Tailwind app)

9. Pin different times of the day.

If possible! It can use a scheduling program like Tailwind & they have a free trial). 50% your own and 50% others people pins.

10. Test the results.

Read Pinterest analytics, keep track of how many followers you are getting and measure traffic to website with Google Analytics. Here is how to add GA to your website. (There is a GA training module in Cake Business School.)

Turning Pinterest Traffic into Sales

Getting people to your website via Pinterest is a great strategy for building your sweet

business.

But now you want that traffic to contact you, get inquiries, and give quotes and book in

orders, correct?

There are 3 steps to turning Pinterest traffic into sales:

1. Content. Create cakes + photos of cakes.

2. Capture. Get their contact details, like name + email address.

3. Convert. Into sales!

#1 Content.

Having (good quality) photo’s is essential ‘content’ in a cake business. This is the product you sell, that you want to sell more of and make money from.

#2 Capture

The #1 rule in online marketing is ‘Get Them On The List’.

To make money online, you need to have a list of people you can email. This is done by asking for their email address via your website. Usually a person will ‘swap’ or give their email address via an ‘Opt In’. An Opt In is when you give something of perceived value to your customer in exchange for their email address.

#3 Convert

Now you convert (your email list) into paying customers.

This is when you share your cakes and sell them. Have a weekly or monthly deal to create orders.

By sending emails (and email newsletters) you can ask ‘’can I give you a free quote?’’ as well as share latest creations, what markets or events you can be found at, what shop stocks your goodies plus regularly stay in contact and keep top of mind!

Collect Email Addresses (Contact Info) From Website

Over 98% of people who hit your website will navigate away and not contact you – boo!

Now you have successfully gotten traffic from Pinterest to your website you want to collect contact details. Email addresses is the best form of contact.

You collect email addresses by way of an ‘Opt In’. An opt in is where you offer something of value in exchange for an email address. For example ‘’Get a free box of 6 cupcakes (valued at $25) when you enter your name and email address’’. I explain further here about what is an opt in.

Use an email service provider to automatically collect email addresses from your website, like MailChimp or ConvertKit. Don’t overthink this and don’t put it in the too-hard basket. This is completely do-able and easier than you think. There are loads of free video tutorials on the Google on how exactly to do this.

For putting an Opt In on your website you have 2 options. Either do it yourself (DIY) or get someone else to do it. There are no other options.

Email service provider will automatically collect the contact details, automatically deliver the promised incentive (voucher for example) and automatically add to your email subscriber list. All while you are sleeping!

Then you can contact directly and ask if you can help with a free quote. (That can be done manually or automatically).

And you can add to an email newsletter list where you email out your latest creations, your latest blog post, what market or event you will be at next, what shop stocks your goodies, a deal/voucher/discount/sale, what social media platforms you are on, invite to join your Facebook group, sneak peaks, etc.
