Outline
1. Data transmission system of MAGDAS
2. Introduction to Africa MAGDAS data DVD
3. Examples of STP phenomena which can see by using MAGDAS data
Our presentation has three main topics.
2ISWI UN/NASA/JAXA Workshop, Helwan, Egypt
About MAGDAS network
MAGDAS is a world-wide ground magnetometer network. It mainly consist of three magnetometer chains: 210MM, Magnetic Equator, and 96 MM chain along the Africa region.
3ISWI UN/NASA/JAXA Workshop, Helwan, Egypt
About MAGDAS magnetometer
Former presentations show the MAGDAS magnetometer system detail. Thus, this presentation snips the detail of magnetometer, and summarized the MAGDAS magnetometer.
Features of MAGDAS: (1) Send 3axes magnetometer data in real time to SERC. (2) Record data on data cards at all times (even during
power failures). (3) Get the precise time and location from GPS. (4) The sampling rate is one second.

MAGDAS near real time plot
• The side panel shows our website for MAGDAS-II stations. All people can see near real time ordinary and diff plot of all the MAGDAS-II stations.
• These plots are supported by your ceaseless maintenance to magnetometer and network.

Network connection between oversea stations and SERC
• There are many differences and difficulties to construct the network connection between each oversea station and SERC.
• The difference of network system at each country.
• For example, Japan is almost covered by broadband network using ADSL or FTTH. However, data transmission by using cell-phone is very expensive and out of global standard (called Galápagos syndrome).

Examples of network connection between oversea stations and SERC
• Direct connection by using broadband network
• SSH protocol is used on background
• This is the standard network connection model between oversea and SERC

Examples of network connection between oversea stations and SERC
• Because of several reasons, MAGDAS cannot send data directly or cannot use SSH protocol

About MAGDAS Africa data DVD• Geomagnetic data
collected by the above methods are released from SERC after some processes for scientific usage (for example, noise reduction, temperature drift correction, and so on).
• SERC announced that we have released Africa MAGDAS data collection as DVD media.
• FTP server is available.

New Africa DVD• In 2010, our teams went
to Africa stations and maintained the magnetometers and networks.
• In addition, we got some of SD and CF media at each station.
• We are processing these media, and updating Africa DVD contents.

STP phenomena in MAGDAS data• In last section, we will
present some examples of STP phenomena which can know from MAGDAS data.
• We can see many Solar Terrestrial Physics (STP) phenomena by analyzing MAGDAS data.
• All of them are very important to understand the complexity of Sun-Earth system. 19ISWI UN/NASA/JAXA Workshop, Helwan, Egypt

STP phenomena: SSC and SFE• There are some sudden
perturbations in the northward component of the ground magnetic fields.
• Sudden perturbation occurred with solar flares is called Solar Flare Effect (SFE).
• The abrupt increase or decrease marked the beginning of a geomagnetic storm is called Storm Sudden Commencement (SSC).
• Side panel shows X-ray plot observed at GOES satellte and SFE observed at MAGDAS stations.

• DP2 is caused by the penetration from polar region. Its origin comes from the solar wind.
• We can observe this phenomenon by MAGDAS magnetometer and FM-CW radar

STP phenomena: Pc3, 4 and 5• Pc3,4,5 and Pi2(focused later) are kinds of Ultra Low
Frequency waves in geomagnetic pulsations. • These are categorized by wave form (Continuous or
Irregular) and period.

STP phenomena: Geomagnetic storm• Geomagnetic storm is a
maximum scale phenomenon in the Solar-Terrestrial Physics.
• Due to a coronal mass ejections (CME), corotating interaction region (CIR), or some effects, Earth's magnetosphere is disturbed.
