TCP/IP Troubleshooting Tools and Strategies
Many network troubleshooting tools are available for Windows. Most are included in the product or theWindows 2000 Server Resource Kit. Microsoft Network Monitor is an e cellent network!tracing tool. "he fullversion is part of the Microsoft Syste#s Manage#ent Server product$ and a #ore li#ited version is included inthe Windows 2000 Server product.
When troubleshooting any proble#$ it is helpful to use a logical approach. So#e %uestions to ask are&
What does work' What does not work' (ow are the things that do and do not work related' (ave the things that do not work ever worked on this co#puter)network' *f so$ what has changed since it last worked'
"roubleshooting a proble# fro# the botto# up is often a good way to isolate the proble# %uickly. "he toolslisted below are organi+ed for this approach.
IPConfig Tool
IPConfig is a co##and!line utility that prints out the ",-)*-!related configuration of a host. When used withthe /all switch$ it produces a detailed configuration report for all interfaces$ including any configured serialports R/S . 1utput can be redirected to a file and pasted into other docu#ents&

Tra!ert is a route!tracing utility. Tra!ert uses the *- ""4 field and *,M- error #essages to deter#ine theroute fro# one host to another through a network. Sa#ple output fro# the tra!ert co##and is shown in the*,M- section of this docu#ent.
Ro#te Tool
Ro#te is used to view or #odify the route table. Ro#te print displays a list of current routes known by *- forthe host. Sa#ple output is shown in the *- section of this docu#ent. Note that in Windows 2000 the current
active default gateway is shown at the end of the list of routes. Ro#te add adds routes to the table. Ro#tedelete re#oves routes fro# the table.
Routes added to the table are not #ade persistent unless the -p switch is specified. Nonpersistent routes lastonly until the co#puter is rebooted.

N$TStat Tool
N$TStat is a useful tool for troubleshooting Net:*1S na#e!resolution proble#s. N$TStat -n displays thena#es that applications$ such as the server and redirector$ registered locally on the syste#. N$TStat -! showsthe Net:*1S na#e cache$ which contains na#e!to!address #appings for other co#puters. N$TStat -R purgesthe na#e cache and reloads it fro# the 4#hosts file. N$TStat RR new in Windows 2000 and N" 7.0 S-8re!registers all na#es with the na#e server. N$TStat -a name perfor#s a Net:*1S adapter status co##andagainst the co#puter that is specified by name . "he adapter status co##and returns the local Net:*1S na#etable for that co#puter and the #edia access control address of the adapter card. N$TStat -s lists the currentNet:*1S sessions and their status$ including statistics.
Nslook#p Tool
Nslook#p $ added in Windows N" 7.0$ is a useful tool for troubleshooting ANS proble#s$ such as host na#eresolution. When you start nslook#p $ it shows the host na#e and *- address of the ANS server that isconfigured for the local syste#$ and then displays a co##and pro#pt. *f you type a %uestion #ark ' $nslook#p shows the different co##ands that are available.
"o look up the *- address of a host$ using the ANS$ type the host na#e and press %nter . Nslook#p defaults tothe ANS server that is configured for the co#puter that it is running on$ but you can focus it on a different ANSserver by typing ser&er name name is the host na#e of the server that you want to use for future lookups .
When you use Nslook#p $ you should be aware of the do#ain na#e devolution #ethod. *f you type in Gust ahost na#e and press %nter $ nslook#p appends the do#ain suffi of the co#puter such ascswatcp.#icrosoft.co# to the host na#e before it %ueries the ANS. *f the na#e is not found$ the do#ainsuffi is devolved by one label in this case$ cswatcp is re#oved$ and the suffi beco#es #icrosoft.co# . "henthe %uery is repeated. Windows 2000!based co#puters only devolve na#es to the second level do#ain
#icrosoft.co# in this e a#ple $ so if this %uery fails$ no further atte#pts are #ade to resolve the na#e. *f afully %ualified do#ain na#e is typed in as indicated by a trailing dot $ the ANS server is only %ueried for thatna#e and no devolution is perfor#ed. "o look up a host na#e that is co#pletely outside of your do#ain$ you#ust type in a fully %ualified na#e.
/n especially useful troubleshooting feature is debug #ode$ which you can invoke by typing set de #g $ or foreven greater detail$ set d( . *n debug #ode$ nslook#p lists the steps being taken to co#plete its co##ands$as shown in this e a#ple&

)i!rosoft Network )onitor
Microsoft Network Monitor is a tool developed by Microsoft to #ake the task of troubleshooting co#plenetwork proble#s easier and #ore econo#ical. *t is packaged as part of the Microsoft Syste#s Manage#entServer product$ but can be used as a stand!alone network #onitor. *n addition$ Windows N" and Windows 98include Network Monitor /gent software$ and Windows N" Server and Windows 2000 include a li#ited version
of Network Monitor. Stations running Network Monitor can attach to stations running the agent software overthe network or by using dial!up re#ote access to perfor# #onitoring or tracing of re#ote network seg#ents."his can be a very useful troubleshooting tool.
Network Monitor works by placing the N*, on the capturing host into pro#iscuous #ode so that it passes everyfra#e on the wire up to the tracing tool. "he li#ited version of Network Monitor that ships with Windows 2000Server allows only traffic to and fro# the co#puter to be traced. ,apture filters can be defined so that onlyspecific fra#es are saved for analysis. ilters can be defined based on source and destination N*, addresses$source and destination protocol addresses$ and pattern #atches. 1nce the fra#es have been captured$ displayfiltering can be used to further narrow down a proble#. Aisplay filtering allows specific protocols to be selectedas well.
Windows N"Hbased co#puters use the Server Message :lock SM: protocol for #any functions$ including fileand print sharing. "he s#b.hlp file in the Net#on parser directory is a good reference for interpreting this
protocol.
