The Psychology of Remote Work
The Psychology of Remote Work
• To be successful as a remote worker, you need to:• Know yourself
• Are you an ”I” or “E”?• Be honest, be open to self-improvement• Know your team
• How do they work? Communicate? Expectations?• Know your surroundings
The Psychology of Remote Work
REMOTE WORK: PROS
What are some benefits of remote work?• You own your environment – make it work for you• Fewer interruptions• No commute!• Less money spent on gas or bus/subway fare
• Increased freedom• Must be built through trust though
REMOTE WORK: CHALLENGES
• Face time is greatly decreased• Less networking, feeling “left out”• Collaboration
• Feeling like you’re starting over• Less freedom?
• Separating home life from work life• Your daily schedule
FACE TIME
• Face time is IMPORTANT• Your work does not always speak for itself• LinkedIn is your friend
• Connect with your colleagues• Set regular meetings with key colleagues• Networking & collaboration should be easy. How?
• Phone, email, Skype, Lync, and on and on• Use webcams (and dress for the office!)• Learn technology – we’re all tech people. Google has all of the
answers.
STARTING OVER?
• If you’re moving from the office to remote, the feeling of “starting over” is a valid one• Don’t discount it – handle it maturely • You’re not re-establishing trust – you’ve earned the
opportunity to build it in a different environment• It’s about the track record• (Over) communicate
HOME / WORK
• Separate your work life from your home life• Establish boundaries – have a work-only space
• Suggestions:• Stick to a strict schedule• Leave your house when you can
• Design a “morning commute”• Work from a local coffee shop or co-working space• Attend events or conferences
