This presentation is the slides from the KaiNexus webinar “How to Spread Continuous Improvement.”
You can watch the full webinar here.
• 1846: Surgical anesthesia – Visible, immediate problem (pain)
– By February, anesthesia had been used in almost all the capitals of Europe, and by June in most regions of the world.
• 1867: Antisepsis – Invisible problem that’s delayed (infection)
– Spread quickly? NOPE
1. Lots of one-on-one mentoring
2. Not just evidence, but 7 touches
3. Seven key, easy to remember messages
• Methodology must be – Consistent
– Disciplined
– Simple
• How do we spread Lean, etc. more effectively or more quickly?
• 12/14: Started daily Kaizen in two units
• 4/15: Active in 14 units, 4 more starting now
• Active coaching is key
• Coached initially by Mark in December 2014
• PI lead was trained and coached
• Two departments every two weeks
– Conference call with KaiNexus (technology)
– Ron spends a day with each dept each week
• 14 departments so far – variation in impact
– Half are “rock stars,” other half not as much
• How to prioritize where to go?
– Based on “pull” from department leaders
– Create pull through exposure of ideas, CEO talks
• PI lead is coaching a second coach
– Can now do 3 or 4 departments at a time
• “First wave” of spread through July
– Then, “second wave” to focus on better problem solving skills (not just PD, but PDSA)
• Hypothesis:
– If
• We’ve found and solved a problem
• Or at least made things a little better
– Then
• That problem is likely to exist elsewhere
• And our implemented idea might help them
• Customer: “Local managers don’t see the opportunities for spread as much as I do.”
– PI lead suggests opportunities for spread
– KaiNexus team reviews OIs and sometimes asks
• “Sneaker-Net”
• Spreadsheets
• PowerPoint files
• Emailing ideas around
• Bulletin boards (local & more public)
• Email newsletters
• CEO blog posts (“Ideas of the Week”)
