Program the Smoke sensor board with the RL78/I1D firmware. The code is the Code\Smoke_sensor folder. You will need IAR Workbench for RL78 to open the project. Run IAR Workbench and go to File>>Open>>Workspace. Browse to the above folder and select *.eww file. Connect to the sensor board with E1 debugger and download the code. Pin 1 of the E1 cable is marked with a different color (usually red or blue) and it should match with the pin 1 of the CN01 at the edge of the board. Make sure the CR123 battery is not inserted in the battery holder at the same time as the E1 flash programmer.

Once programmed, disconnect E1 debugger and power up the sensor board by inserting the CR123 battery. The smoke sensor board can be tested with either (a) smoke (or simulated smoke) or (b) reflection of IR light (for example using white paper) between the IR emitter and photodiode . Once the Smoke is detected an alarm will sound with a cadence of 6 seconds of alarm On and 3 seconds of alarm Off, repeating every 9 seconds as long as there is reflection of InfraRed light between emitter and photodiode. If the test is done in high ambient IR light, it is better to place the Smoke sensor inside a larger box to shield the detector from external IR light. Otherwise, inside a room with fluorescent lighting, with little/no incident IR light, the sensor may be tested without shielding.

Method (a): with Optical smoke chamber left in place on sensor board.

Simulated smoke from an aerosol can (examples: Esl/Interlogix brand – “Smoke in a Can”, or HSI Fire and Safety Group Model No. 25S – “Smoke Check”) works well by spraying directly into side vents of the black optical chamber vents. Usually, 0.5sec to 2sec of simulated smoke spray will trigger the alarm.

Method (b): with Optical smoke chamber removedPlace a piece of stiff white cardboard or paper at the reflection point shown on the PCB stencil as shown in picture below. When IR light from the IR emitter LED on the left is reflected to the IR Photodiode on the right side, then the Smoke Sensor will sound the alarm for as long as IR light is detected.
