Though you might be fantastic on paper, you are even better in person. Think of all of those Science Fairs, Math Exhibitions, and debates; they were preparing you for this!

Even if the school doesn’t have a formal interview process, make an appointment for an “informative” interview. Though they may not be taking notes, they will remember you later.

Interview Don’ts

Don’t be late. How lame. Get there an hour early if you need to and hang out at the student center, but don’t be late.

Dress nicely, but don’t wear a suit. The admissions officer will probably be in business casual, and you never want to outdress your interviewer.

Don’t act nonchalant or challenge the person about the school’s programs or admissions policies.

Don’t memorize a speech extolling the virtues of said school. It sounds forced, and worse yet, fake.

Interview Dos!

Do be prepared with questions about the school. Examples: Study abroad options, honors programs, residential life, and course requirements.

Do be prepared to talk about your favorite book.

Do be prepared to talk about where you see yourself in ten years.

Do be prepared to get a “feel” for the interviewer. If they are laid back, loosen up a little. If not, stay formal.

Do talk about how your high school differs from others.

Do have a firm handshake and strong introduction. First impressions are key.

Do get their card and write a Thank You Note within two weeks!
