Merbau Timber?

The merbau tree, also called the kwila or Pacific kwila, grows in various regions throughout the southeast Pacific rim. The rich brown wood contains yellow flecks. According to distributor Dansson, Inc., merbau is commonly used in boat building, decking and outdoor furniture. A protecting and stabilizing coat makes the resinous timber waterproof and resistant to fading. Routine deck care involves rinsing dirt and dust away with a hose. If stains, such as mildew or pollen stains, form on the deck, a deep cleaning with an oxygen bleach solution should remove them without discoloring the wood or damaging the protective coating.

Instructions

1. Rinse the deck using a hose to remove dirt, dust and outdoor debris. Do not use a pressure washer as it can strip the finish used on merbau timber.

2. Combine 1/4 cup oxygen bleach with 1 gallon warm water. Oxygen bleach is a powdered, chlorine-free bleach, so unlike liquid household bleach, will not discolor your deck. Never use chlorine-based liquid bleach on the deck.

3. Dip a scrubbing brush into the cleaning mixture. Scrub the mixture into any stains. As the oxygen bleach works into the stains, it will begin to bubble. Allow the mixture to sit on the stain for five minutes.

4. Use a hose to rinse the cleaning solution from the merbau timber. Repeat the process until the stains have lifted.
