How to remove pen ink from clothes

It’s a real damper to anyone’s day to have a pen—or worse, several if you’re the type who tucks a row of them in your shirt pocket—explode while you’re in the middle of an exam or presentation. Fortunately the solution only requires a few more steps to regular washing, using items you can easily find in the house.

Let’s start by having the items below ready

• Rubbing alcohol

• Shaving cream (an option if the alcohol doesn’t work)

• Aerosol hairspray (the next alternative if the previous two don’t work)

• Washing machine and laundry detergent

PROCEDURE

1. Apply rubbing alcohol directly to the stain.

2. Let it sit for a few minutes, just enough for the solvent to penetrate the fabric and react

with the ink. Do not allow it to dry.

3. Blot the stained area with white paper towels dampened with alcohol, if you see it working and the

stain getting lighter. You can also use water for this purpose.

4. If the alcohol doesn’t work, repeat the first two steps using foaming shaving cream in place of alcohol. Wipe the area with white paper towels and blot using the same dampened with

water to dilute the stain.

5. If the culprit seems to really like sticking to your shirt or trouser pocket, end the love affair using hairspray in steps 1

and 2. Remember, use this only as a last resort and go easy on the nozzle as hairspray damages some types of fabrics. Wipe

the area with white paper towels and blot using the same dampened with water.

6. Again, don’t wait for it to dry! Since the stain is already lightened

somewhat, finish the job by tossing the fabric into the washing machine and

wash as usual.

7. After washing, allow it to air dry so you can see if there are still faint traces of the stain. If there are, repeat the procedure above with a few drops or a thin layer of the product you used previously. Once satisfied of your handiwork, wash and dry the cloth as usual and think

about switching to another brand or type of pen.
