    HOW TO USE SPECTRUM ANALYSER (EXFO-FTB500) TO CHECK THE QUALITY OF CHANNEL?

    This application note is intended to provide the reader with basic understanding of optical spectrum analyzer.

    1. Why do we use a Spectrum analyser?

    Optical spectrum analysis is the measurement of optical power as a function of wavelength. We need to use the spectrum analysis to check the quality of channel in our network. Two importants paramters are verified when using optical spectrum analyser: the power and the OSNR (Optical Signal over Noise Ration).

    2. How to connect and regulations? a. How to connect?

    To use the optical spectrum analyser, you need an optical jumper (SC-LC or FC-LC depends on the nature port of the spectrum analyser) which will enable you to connect the spectrum analyser to the port of the amplifier through which you want to check the channel (Mon Tx). See picture below:

    We connect on this port of the amplifier (MON Tx) because there we have the total signal.

    If you dont have a SC-LC optical jumper (e.g: have a FC-LC optical jumper), you can change the port on the spectrum analyser and put the FC one. See picture below:

    3. How to get measures? First, identify the link you want to analyse. As example, we take the four links below:

    - CE0193--CE0070 (AHPHG 3/4) - CE0030CE0070 (AHPHG 2/6) - CE0213CE0070 (AHPHG 1/10)

    Open the cover an insert the SC port of your optical jumper

    Push and rotate (90) in anticlockwise to remove the port. To put another port; insert and rotate 90 in clockwise. Take care while doing it!

    Turn on the device and click on Toolbox. See picture below:

    After that, you will have a screen displayed like this below:

    - Then select C-band,

    - Verify Preferences settings menu (leave default values).

    After that, click on start. The device will begin to display grap on the screen as you can see in the picture below:

    Now you can gather this results. To save the results, click on save .

    Select THz or nm to be able to see the results with frequency or wavelength respectively.

    You can notice that here OSNR is greater than 14dB and difference between each power doesnt exceed 2 dB. In fact the maximum difference is 0.43 dB. So the power is good balanced.

    A new window will be displayed and enables you to type the name of the file

    and choose the directory where you want to save. Insert your USB key (make

    sure you dont have virus!!!), register the file inside it.

    For the other links, do the same (connect the optical jumper to the suitable port

    on the amplifier and run the measurements.
