How to make CAMS outputs
more useful for users?
2
Topics
• Products
• Presentation of products
• Organize the way we interact with users
3
Topic 1: Products
• Offer a new product: air quality index
• Opportunity: DG-Environment is working on defining
an European air quality index
• Offer more support on downstream service
development especially downscaling air quality
products
• Various approaches available including some very
simple ones, e.g., model output statistics
4
Topic 1: Products (cont.)
• We should provide more information about where our
CAMS products do not require downscaling (maps
depending on different pollutants)
• Investigate a new product: contribution of natural aerosols
(dust and sea salt) to PM (both global and regional)
• Importance of adding nitrates in the aerosols represented in
the global system (ongoing)
• Offer combined solution for air quality and weather
products
5
Topic 2: Presentation of products
• Review the timeliness of products, daily and delayed-
mode products (survey the users)
• Investigate a personalized catalogue so that users can
easily find out their preferred products
• Organize hackathon or challenge to stimulate
development of smartphone apps using CAMS data
• Looking into development of CAMS games, e.g.,
educational games or more ambitious by approaching
large game developing companies
6
Topic 2: Presentation of products
• Improve visibility of existing applications of CAMS on the
web site, e.g., SDS-WAS, ICAP
• Take opportunities of exceptional events to give practical
details on CAMS products which are used to generate
information
• Intermediate users
• Investigate a notification service that users can customize,
e.g., define area and threshold and receive email/text
• Review color scale of air quality maps, especially PM
7
Topic 3: Organize the way we interact with users
• Target user groups and organize side events at
meetings they are attending
• For policy users, this exists
• Target agriculture, health…
• Approach WHO on the contribution of CAMS global
maps of air quality especially PM
• Keep a good connection with the user uptake activities
that are funded separated by EC
