Mission Into The Future - A Quest For Sustainability

DRAMA, GREECE, 26- 28 February 2013

Presentation made by the Romanian team:

Teachers Ioana Stancut and Lidia Rusu

And students: Diana Mujoiu , Raluca Cuceanu, Raluca Andronoiu

The sun is one of the humanity's most important toolfor survival. It gives off practically unlimited amountsof light that is used by plants to generate energy and byanimals for heat.

Even though technology can be very useful (forexample gas ovens), natural and simple technologieslike solar ovens can reduce fossil fuel use or evenreplace fossil fuels in places that don't have abundantresources, and it's an enjoyable project. The materialsused can mostly be found locally from recycled sourceswhich makes it even more sustainable.

Watching pictures and short

recordings from Germany

The following materials are necessary:- 2 medium to large cardboard boxes that fit inside each other with 3-4 inches or so of space around the sides of the box. Also necessary is a large piece of cardboard for the reflector that is as wide as the widest part of the large box and about 2-3 feet long. - 1 roll of aluminum foil- a piece of glass (or plastic) to be fitted over top of the larger box (since we decided to recycle, we used a piece of glass from an old painting). - razor knife- school glue- black spray paint or black construction paper- enough newspaper that will, crumpled, fill a bottom row and the sides in between the two boxes. This can be found at recycling centers.- duct or foil tape for insulation

This is our Physics teacher , Lidia Rusu, explaining the students how can a device be used to catch the solar energy

and what we are going to do next.

Butter

Wax Aluminum foil

Chocolate

Aluminum bowl

We decided to try melting wax, chocolate and butter.

Black spray paint

Halogen lamp

Before conducting the experiment, we tried to understand what we were about to do. In this respect, we did some energy –related experiments under the supervision of our teachers, Mrs. CameliaLupsoiu and Mrs. Lidia Rusu.

They showed us how to find the focal point and what exactly that was.

EXPERIMENTING

Painting black the small recipient for

melting

Finding the focal point

Melted chocolate

Step 1: Finding Tools and Materials

Step 2: Cutting Off Flaps of Smaller Box

Step 3: Crumpled Paper on the Bottom

Step 4: Spray paint the Small Box Black

Either spraypaint the inside bottom of the small box black or glue a sheet ofblack construction paper, fitted to the size of the box, to the inside bottom ofthe small box. We recommend doing this outside and try to not inhale thefumes.

We chose to spray paint a piece of cardboard which we laterfitted in the small box.

Step 5: Glue Aluminum Foil on Insides of Small Box

Step 6: Insulating the Sides

Step 7: Cut , Install and PutAluminum Foil on the Flapfor the Reflector

Step 8: Place Glass or Plasticon Top of Large Box

8.

Before using this small box, we decided to spraypaint it black for increasing the speed of

melting.

We did this experiment in a cold February day , when the

sun was not so generous to us. So we used a halogen lamp

instead.

Waiting to see what it is going to happen:

Is the wax melting or not???

Thanks for reducing your fossil fuel use, cooking a more natural way, and we

hope you make some scrumptious meals!
