FACEBOOK TIMELINE

So, the new Facebook timeline is here and brands are redesigning their presence to adapt

to it. Facebook’s timeline provides a plethora of new features to increase candidate en-

gagement and tell your brand story in a captivating way.

Timeline is the reverse-chronological display of your brand’s history on Facebook. With

timeline, Facebook has introduced some optional (and non-optional) features. In this

book we will cover the new features that come with timeline and how they can be utilized

for recruitment purposes.

So, let’s get started!

1. COVER Now brand pages can display a huge 851x315-pixel banner at the top of the page. This

banner is the first thing that visitors will see when they arrive at your fan page. This is

the place to tell who you are and to deliver your brand message to your fan page visitors.

Here are 2 great examples of how to do this:

A) The Home Depot Careers

B) Intuit Careers

2. PROFILE PICTURE

The profile picture is shown in your timeline in a 125 x 125-pixel area. A 32 x 32 thumbnail

of the same picture is shown next to all of your updates in your timeline, and in your fan’s

news feed. A colorful logo can be a great choice here! Choose an image with 180 x 180

pixel dimensions. It will also look good when scaled down to thumbnail size.

Here are 2 examples of profile picture:

A) eBay

B) McDonald

3. ABOUT SECTION

The About section is just below the cover page. This is where you can include a brief

description about yourself or your company. Visitors can click through the About link to

view a map and view other basic info. Maximise on this by filling out a short, powerful

description of your employer identity.

A) EMC about

B) The Home Depot About

4. PAGE TABS

Tabs are now shown on the right-hand side in a bigger 111 x 74-pixel thumbnail. (It was

previously on the left hand side) There are four app tiles with the first permanently

occupied by Photos. The remaining three can be customized to include the tabs you want

to show when candidates arrive at your page. So now you can have a thumbnail showing

an interesting picture – or a call to action – for a tab.

You should put the native or custom apps that are most crucial, which can be career tabs,

Videos or any contests or events you are promoting. Display the Likes panel if you have

some good social proof. Here are a few examples of this:

A) Here is how The Home Depot is utilizing it.

‘+’ icon to import your custom apps, and then hover over them. Click the pencil icon to

5. MESSAGES

Facebook has now introduced messages for fan pages. Your visitors can privately message

you from the fan page by clicking on the Message button located next to the Like button on

your timeline. This is a great opportunity when candidates might want to ask questions to

you, without necessarily having to discuss them publically.

The message button is enabled by default, if you want to change enable/disable this

feature. You can find this setting in the edit page. Check/Uncheck the checkbox for

Messages accordingly to show or hide this button.

6. FRIEND ACTIVITY

On the right-hand section of the timeline feed, Facebook now displays visitors’ friends who

have Liked your page. Just below that, Facebook shows one latest update from the friend

mentioning your brand. This is really engaging.

These activities are shown automatically, but be careful to delete negative posts about your

brand so that they don’t get coverage in the Friend Activity section.

7. PAGE POSTS

Now you can pin any of your post to the top left of the timeline and it will stay there for

7 days. So if you have an upcoming recruitment event, a hot job opening, or are running a

contest or competition, this is the place to show that off. Using pinned posts, you can

control what your visitors will see when they first arrive at your timeline. So, always keep a

link pinned, and pin content to drive traffic.

Another thing you can do is highlight important posts to have them appear the full width of

the page. Using this, you can highlight pics, videos, positive user posts, or job posts,

through the timeline.

To highlight a post, click on the star next to the edit icon. To pin a post click on the pencil

icon and click on Pin to Top.

8. MILESTONES

With timeline, you can publish special stories or milestones about your brand. For example,

when it was founded, a significant product launch, an acquisition…or any big

accomplishment.

Milestone posts are automatically posted in the expanded view, and are visible to everyone

by default. You can also post a 843 x 403-pixel picture to go with the milestone.

You can add a milestone by clicking on milestone on your posting bar –

9. ADMIN PANEL

Facebook’s Admin Panel now appears just above the timeline when clicked. Admin Panel

provides a quick view of new notifications and messages you have received. It also gives a

snapshot of your reach data. Using the Manage button on the Admin Panel, you can

configure all of your page’s settings.
