Note: Salary reviews are a separate process and not part of the appraisal,
…albeit performance measurement may impact on remuneration.
1 minute praising1 minute reprimands
Catch people doing things well and praise them in the moment.Address non-performance quickly, using a ‘non-personal’ feedback process.Don’t wait for appraisals to praise or reprimand!
Regular short one-to-ones with staff eg monthly or 6-weekly.
Eg “Tell me about your achievements over the last month and how this fits in with the business goals….Tell me about your priorities for the next month and how this fits in with your yearly objectives….Are there any obstacles and if so, what do you plan to do to address these?...”
Rule of appraisals: ‘no surprises’.
Use appraisal process (see the 80/20 Challenge appraisal form for reference)
Set staff annual goals aligned to achievement of the business objectives for the year.
