VIDEO: SESAME STREET OPENING

FADE IN:

OPENING SCENE

The Count is walking with a clipboard woefully counting the students that won’t be graduating this year.

COUNT …Seven. Seven students not graduating this year. Eight. Eight students not graduating this year. Nine. Nine…wait a second. How could this be??! He has so much potential. This must be a mistake. Hey Big Bird, come here….(wait)Big Bird?

BIG BIRD Hey, Mr. Count! I’m sorry, I was just playing catch with Snuffy. What do you need?

COUNT Can you please call that silly bright red kid to my office?

BIG BIRD Do you mean that pre-school kid that’s always walking around with a goldfish and giant crayons?

COUNT Yes, that’s the one.

BIG BIRD No problem. I think he’s in the bathroom again…potty training, you know. I’ll be back in one minute.

COUNT One! One moment to wait! (maniacal laughter…) waahaaahaa! (commotion stops and he sits wondering what to do with himself next)

Elmo enters the stage and walks toward the desk

ELMO La, la, la LA! It’s me, Elmo! I’m so excited to be here Principal the Count!

COUNT Greetings, my little furry friend, it is I, the Count, and I am concerned about Oscar the Grouch. You two are amigos, correct?

ELMO Oh, you bet. We do everything together…sing songs, play guessing games, watch tweedlebugs have picnics…you know, typical high school stuff.

COUNT Ah yes, very typical. However, I’m very concerned…a little batty told me that Oscar is not on track to graduate this year.

ELMO Well Principal The Count, I haven’t seen him around much lately. He’s been missing a lot of class to hang out behind Hooper’s with some of the bad monsters…the tough ones, like Harry and Grover. He’s been getting into a lot of trouble lately, going near, going far…over and over again. I heard he even stole a capital “I” from the English department.

COUNT Drat, I knew it! Big Bird, you two are buddy buddy—what can we do to help him get back on track?

BIG BIRD I have no idea. You really think a giant 6-year-old bird that can’t fly has all the answers? Maybe we should ask all the people in our schoolhouse how to help Oscar.

Page 4: “HOW TO GET TO JOSTENS RENAISSANCE STREET” · PDF filePage 3 of 21 Elmo enters the stage and walks toward the desk ELMO La, la, la LA! It’s me, Elmo! I’m so excited to be here

COUNT But Big Bird, who are the people in our schoolhouse?

BIG BIRD I’m glad you asked…I just need my special musician friend Sage Folksworthy to help me answer that question.

Guitar line live

BIG BIRD Hi Sage! It’s so good to see you.

SAGE Hi Big Bird, it’s great to be here. I heard that you’d like to sing a little song to find out who the people in your schoolhouse are.

BIG BIRD I sure do!

Well they're the people that you call When you're walking down the hall They're the people that you need each day!

BIG BIRD Thank you everybody. That was fun! I know what we can do to help Oscar get back on track…First thing we have to do is break our schoolhouse up into four sections and have them compete for prizes. It works every time.

COUNT Four! Four incredible competing sections! (maniacal laughter…) waahaaahaa! Sounds like a plan, my bright yellow friend. Let’s get started!

Elmo walks to middle of stage with Count.

ELMO To get started, we need a few of our friends to help cheer on each section. Come on out, Cookie!

Enter Cookie monster with giant cookie jar in hand.

COOKIE Me so excited to be here, Elmo! Me want to do whatever Cookie can to help out his good friend Oscar.

ELMO That’s great, Cookie. You might want to start by brushing up on your own grammar first. This is an educational program after all.

COOKIE Sorry, Cookie just nervous in front of all these people. And when I get nervous I eat…COOKIES! (Cookie takes cookies out of pocket and crumbles them in mouth)

BIG BIRD It’s okay, Cookie. We’re all still learning. Just get ready to get your section fired up for the big game. Now, we need the guy we’re all here for today…Oscar, come on out!

Oscar pops out of trash can that is already on stage.

OSCAR What’s all the commotion about?! I was trying to sort all my garbage. Is this another one of your rotten games, Elmo?

ELMO It sure is, Oscar. The section with the most points at the end of this rally gets a one-of-a-kind FREE Rally T-Shirt! (holds up shirt to audience)

OSCAR Yeah, I’d love one of those…to blow my nose with!

Count and Oscar laugh…

OSCAR Alright, let’s get this garbage over with. Start it off with some grouchy yelling. How ‘bout the loudest section we announce gets 10 free bonus points.

COOKIE Oh yeah. Cookie go first. Let’s hear it loud and proud for me section…”C” is for Cookie’s Monsters!!

OSCAR Big deal. So we’re playing games. What’s the point?

BIG BIRD Oscar, they’re here to tell us all about Jostens Renaissance – it can help you get you back on track to graduate with our class…but first we need to teach you about the four Rs.

OSCAR Oh sure, and you expect us to believe that? Just like your imaginary friend Snuffleupagus? Whatever you say, bird.

ELMO But Oscar, Big Bird is right! You’ve just gotta believe him. Jostens Renaissance can help you, Oscar!

COOKIE Cookie thinks you might be right, Elmo. It’s up to us now. Me start Renaissance right now with a little song I just made up.

VIDEO: R is for Renaissance

ELMO Elmo liked that song. It makes me think about what it would be like to be a famous rock star. Would you all like to meet a real rock star Elmo knows?

ALL We sure do!

ELMO Well, it’s Elmo’s pleasure to introduce you to this year’s Jostens Renaissance Rock Star, [name] of Marine City High School, please come up to join us on Renaissance Street!

OSCAR Oh great, there’s goes the neighborhood.

COOKIE Cookie thinks this recognition thing is really delicious!

BIG BIRD You’re right, Cookie. A little strange, but definitely right. Renaissance is all about recognition of educators and students.

COUNT That is correct! How could I forget? Back in Transylvania, Recognition was something I could really sink my teeth into!

VIDEO: Recognition

COUNT Let’s do some now, starting with one of my favorite numbers…4! It’s not easy to get good grades all the time, but it’s even harder to get a 4.0. Will all of the 4.0 students in the audience please stand up for a round of applause?

Music: ABC-DEF-GHI (Big Bird).mp3

COOKIE Cookie have someone else to recognize. Me always balancing full plates of cookies so me want to recognize students that really know how to balance a full — plate—scholar athletes. Scholar athletes, please stand. Congratulations!

Wait for Ray.

Music: Elmo’s song.mp3

ELMO Ray, one of your fellow Highland Tartans told me that this is your first Jostens Renaissance National Conference…whattya think so far? (wait for response) That’s great! Well, on behalf of Jostens Renaissance, we’d like to congratulate you on 27 years of education and your reward as the 2010 Highland Regional high School Educator of the Year! Let’s hear it for Ray!

Ray exits stage.

OSCAR This renaissance thing is a bunch of garbage. What’s the point? I’ve got another “R” for you…ROTTEN! And Ridiculous. I’m outta here…

Oscar goes into can and disappears backstage

COUNT Poor Oscar, he just has to give Renaissance a chance. It’s as easy as 1,2,3!

media wow award

LUNCH LADY Thanks for having me, lil fella. It’s so great to be here on stage instead behind a vat of steamed carrots and Salisbury steak! I’m very proud to present this prestigious award to the school who has made a name for their Renaissance program in the media. This year’s Media Wow Award goes to ______________________________!

Music: Sesame Street Theme.mp3

Wait for school reps to come on stage.

ELMO Congratulations, [school name], and thank you for helping, Lunch Lady! Say hi to the Swedish Chef for me!

COOKIE Wow, Elmo, Cookie think you need more friends your own age.

BIG BIRD Yeah, maybe Cookie’s right. I think we need to move on before you have more friends come out. Let’s introduce you to another one of my friends. Krista Sullivan, can you please come up to join me?

Page 15: “HOW TO GET TO JOSTENS RENAISSANCE STREET” · PDF filePage 3 of 21 Elmo enters the stage and walks toward the desk ELMO La, la, la LA! It’s me, Elmo! I’m so excited to be here

COOKIE That’s right, reinforcement is very important. If Cookie and friends want Oscar to graduate, me need to reinforce the good things Oscar does instead of always pointing out what he does wrong.

Oscar comes back on stage.

ELMO That‘s right, Cookie. When you reinforce good things, it all adds up to one amazing student. Speaking of amazing students, I’d like to introduce you to another friend from Renaissance Street. Emily Parker! Emily Parker, can you please come see Elmo?

Music: Elmo’s song.mp3

Wait for Emily.

ELMO Hi Emily! I haven’t seen you since you were three! Emily is an eighth grader from Walker Junior High, and she is this year’s Viking of the Year! She was also honored by Kohl’s Kids with a Heart Award for her work with Senior Citizens. Way to go, Emily, and thanks for all your hard work!

OSCAR Alright, alright. I get it. Let me try this game thing. I need some of you stinkin’ audience members to come onstage for my game. Two from each section.

Music: Sesame Street Theme.mp3

Contestants are gathered on the stage.

Cookie sneaks off stage.

OSCAR Okay contestants, listen up cuz I don’t want to tell you twice. Watch my crummy video so you know how to play my game.

BIG BIRD How exciting. And you know what else is exciting? Respecting other people for who they are. Watch this…

VIDEO: Respect

Count sneaks back on stage for 2-40 year educators

COUNT Speaking of respect, I have a very special group that I would like to pay respect to right now. Back when I lived in Transylvania…

ALL We know!

OSCAR Yeah, ya haven’t lived in Transylvania for years. Move on!

COUNT I’m sorry, it’s just so dear to my heart. Now where was I? Ah yes, without these people, we wouldn’t be here today. It’s time for us to honor our educators! Will all educators with 2-9 years of experience please stand for a round of applause?

BIG BIRD Yeah, congratulations, educators. Now we need educators between 10 and 19 years of experience to stand up. Way to go!

ELMO Oh, oh! Elmo have a good idea! If you have been in education between 20 and 29 years please stand for some applause!

Page 17: “HOW TO GET TO JOSTENS RENAISSANCE STREET” · PDF filePage 3 of 21 Elmo enters the stage and walks toward the desk ELMO La, la, la LA! It’s me, Elmo! I’m so excited to be here

OSCAR Oh yeah? 29 years? Big rotten, hairy deal. Let’s see if there are any old timers in the audience. Hey teachers – if you’ve been trying to torture me with school for more than 30 years, please come up and join us on Renaissance Street.

COUNT 30, more than 30 years in education. Wa-ah-ah-ah! Come up and join us.

Music: Sesame Street Theme.mp3

Teachers come on stage

COUNT These fine people have brought us all together to celebrate academic success. Without all of you, none of this is possible. On behalf of Jostens, thank you for your years of dedication to education. Shall we strike a pose for the paparazzi?

Pose for pictures

OSCAR Okay, okay. It’s time to leave the stage, but if you’ve been in education for 40 years or more, please stay on the stage. If ya haven’t been teachin’ for more than 40 years, SCRAM!

Music: Rubber Duckie.mp3

Educators leave and one 40+ teacher is left standing, Frank Palatucci.

OSCAR Oh great…it figures it’d be a fellow trash man from New Jersey!

Characters present Frank with award and hug/high-five/whatever and gush about how great he is and let him speak.

OSCAR I gotta admit, that’s pretty cool. I think I might give this Renaissance thing a try. I just gotta raise some of my F’s to B’s and I should make the grade.

Page 18: “HOW TO GET TO JOSTENS RENAISSANCE STREET” · PDF filePage 3 of 21 Elmo enters the stage and walks toward the desk ELMO La, la, la LA! It’s me, Elmo! I’m so excited to be here

COUNT Ahh, very nice! That is all we can hope for, Oscar!

ELMO AND BIG BIRD We’ll help you, Oscar!

Oscar leaves stage with Elmo and Big Bird.

COUNT You know, he has a rough road ahead of him, but I believe in him. But as we all know, it’s not easy getting B’s. Just ask my friends Sage Folksworthy and Kermit the Frog.

Sage and Kermit appear at the brick wall to sing it’s not easy getting Bs

Guitar line live

KERMIT AND SAGE Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here, and I’d like to tell you a little bit about what it’s like to try to raise your grades from Cs and Ds to those hard to get Bs. It's not that easy getting Bs Having to spend each day improving Cs and Ds When I think it could be nicer getting Cs, or Ds or Fs or something easier to accomplish like that It's not easy getting Bs I seem to struggle with so many other ordinary things And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're Not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water Or stars in the sky But Bs are close to As And Bs can be cool and friendly-like And Bs can be big like an ocean, or important Like a mountain, or tall like a tree When Bs are all there are to be It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why Wonder, I’ll get Bs and it'll do fine, it's beautiful And I think it's what I want to be

Sage stays on stage and Lunch lady enters to help with game.

COUNT Delightful! One delightful little frog! He is right, you know. It takes time to improve your grades. It also takes time to do my favorite

Cookie and Elmo and Bird come back onstage with caps and gowns on.

ELMO Great news, principal the count…Elmo and Cookie are going to graduate!

COOKIE Yes, me so excited, but me also worried about Oscar. We don’t know if Renaissance help Oscar make it to graduation.

BIG BIRD We’ve done all we can do. It’s up to him now, but no matter what happens, we’ve still got a lot to celebrate.

COUNT Yes, congratulations, little monsters, but indeed it would be dreadful if Oscar cannot graduate. I know he has been working

his can off.

ELMO Before we can graduate, we need to find out who won the big Renaissance street competition!

COUNT Calm down, Elmo, for it is I, the Count, and it is time to announce the winning section of the Renaissance Street competition. Before I announce the winners, remember to bring the winning card from your chair to the registration desk to receive your prize T-Shirt! Okay, let’s reveal the winning section…congratulations!

ELMO Well, it’s time for our graduation ceremony and still no sign of Oscar.

COUNT I still have faith in him. After all, with Renaissance, you can achieve anything. But it’s up to him to work hard and find his own success.

COOKIE Me so sad I lost my appetite, even for cookies. Let’s go…maybe he can make it next year.

Oscar enters from backstage with cap and gown on.

OSCAR Hey, where’s everybody goin? (pause for applause)

ALL Yay! You did it! Way to go, Oscar!

OSCAR That’s right, I raised 3 of my F’s to B’s and I’m ready to graduate. In fact, I like math so much now, I even wrote a song about it.
