A good jawline is a key component of the handsome face.
People find men with strong jawlines attractive for biological reasons
we inherit from our ancestors. A strong jaw primarily signals one thing
to women (subconsciously of course): Higher levels of testosterone.
It’s shown that humans in the developmental stages of life who have
higher levels of testosterone will develop stronger jawlines and a
more masculine facial structure.
This is subconsciously attractive to women because higher levels of
testosterone are linked to better genes, or at least, more attractive
genes. Things such as muscle tone, a better immune system, and
more ambition are all linked to higher levels of testosterone. This
frames you as a better mate and provider for her and your potential
children, subconsciously of course. Crazy right?
So if you’re like me, and the genetic gods didn’t bless you with a great
jaw, there are still things you can do to achieve that handsome look.
This comes from years of research and lots of trial and error. If I
suggest it, I’ve tried it.

1.Chew gum
Chewing gum with has been the easiest and most effective way for
me to construct my jawline. It sounds simple but it can have profound
effects on your facial structure.
There was a study done where researchers told participants to chew
gum daily for one year. After a year, researchers took a look at the
before and after photos and saw massive changes in participant’s
jawlines.
There are even women who have chewed too much gum in their
younger years and now undergo plastic surgery because they want to
get rid of their masculine jaws. Some women will get Botox injected
into their masseter muscle to relax it, as this muscle is responsible for
a squarer jawline. The masseter is located on the lower sides of the
jaw as seen below.
Brad Pitt is an example of a guy who has very well developed
masseter muscles…

Chewing gum will work this muscle heavily. Try it out for yourself.
Clench your teeth together tightly for a few moments. Feel the sides
of your lower jaw expand as you clench? That’s your masseter being
worked. Chewing gum will also help develop the muscles around your
cheekbones, making them appear more prominent.
Now in order to get the benefits of chewing gum, you need to chew
something that will give your face a work out. You can go get regular
gum from any gas station as a start, but use enough of it to feel some
burn in your muscles as you chew. A pro tip is to drink a little bit of
cold water when you chew. This will toughen up the gum a bit and
make it more difficult to bite.
The problem I have with regular gum is that besides it not being
tough enough, it tends to soften and deteriorate in your mouth after
6
extended use. You won’t really be able to give your facial muscles a
great workout with standard chewing gum.
There are only two gums out there that I recommend using, Falim
gum (Link) and Mastic gum (Link). Both are tough but still pretty easy
to chew. I use Mastic gum about every other day. I’m actually
chewing some as I write this.
From the picture you can see some of the muscles in my jaw actually
protruding more just from using the gum for about 20 minutes. The
great thing about this stuff is that it will last you nearly as long as you
want to chew it. It’ll feel a little strange at first but once you get used
to it, you’ll crave it.
When you chew this stuff, make sure that you chew evenly on all
sides of the mouth so that you don’t overdevelop muscles on one side
of your face.

2. Exercise Your Face Along with chewing gum, you can use specific exercises to target the
facial muscles. We work out every other muscle in our body to look
better; why shouldn’t we do the same with our face? These are
simple exercises that can be used anytime.
1. Tilt your head back and look up towards the ceiling. While doing
this, take your lower lip and extend it over your upper lip, trying to
touch your nose. You should feel a stretch in your lower jaw
muscles under your chin. Hold for 20-30 seconds
2. Take your tongue and press it firmly against the roof of your
mouth. Make sure that a large part of your tongue is pressed flat
against the roof, not just the tip. Press harder and harder until you
feel your jaw muscles start to burn a bit. Hold for 20-30 seconds.
3. Make a kiss face and pucker your lips. Keep pushing your lips
further and further outwards till you cannot go any further. Hold this
position for 30-60 seconds. You should feel a strain on your
cheeks and the muscles around your lips.
You should be doing these every day. I work these in by just doing
these quickly when I think of them, or during a commute somewhere.
8
I also want to add that lifting heavy weights seems to also help
strengthen the muscles in your face. This could be caused by a
number of factors. It could be that the muscles in your face are being
clenched and tightened as you push heavy weight. It could also be
that lifting weights promotes testosterone production. If a person is
still in their developmental stages of life, this extra testosterone could
have profound effects on how one’s jawline ends up being shaped.
Another theory could be that men who work out tend to have low
body fat percentages. This could help show off their facial features
better. If you look at body builder types, they all have very masculine
facial structures. As far as I know, this is not backed by any empirical
study, just merely an observation.
3. Lose Weight On that note, let’s talk about one of the biggest obstructions to a great
jaw: FAT. This one could be first on the list. A low body fat
percentage is a necessity for a good jawline.
No matter what you do, if you have a bunch of fat covering your face,
you’ll never be able to see a great jaw underneath it. These other tips
will help you if you have some fat around your face, but if you are
significantly over-weight, you need to focus on this step first.
Since you can’t target a specific area for fat loss, you’ll need to get on
a diet and exercise program to lose weight in general. I usually
Pivotimage.com|PatrickKenger 9
supplement a fat burner into my diet when I’m trying to lose weight.
I’ve tried a few but I’ve had good results with Hydroxy Cut (Link). It’s
inexpensive and won’t make you crazy jittery. But you NEED to use it
with diet and exercise.
If you need help putting a diet and fitness plan together I can help you
get started during an Online Makeover Session. But there is TONS of
free information out on the Internet about how to lose weight. Find
something that works for you that you’ll actually stick to. As long has
you have a caloric deficit, meaning you burn more calories than you
consume, you will lose weight.
4. Supplement & Retain Less Water Depending on your diet and lifestyle, your face will retain a lot of
water. When your face retains water, it makes you look heavier and
reduces the prominence of your cheekbones and jawline.
Too much salt in your diet will cause lots of bloating in your face.
Make sure you limit your sodium intake to lean yourself out. Avoid
carbs as well as these will tend to bloat up your face. If you’ve ever
over indulged in carbs for a night, you probably know the experience
of waking up in the morning and seeing that your face has turning into
a puffy balloon. Carb face is no joke.
10
To help curb this, drink more water, a LOT more water. About a
gallon a day is recommended. It sounds counter productive but as
any bodybuilder will tell you, the more water you drink, the less water
your body retains.
And lastly, you can use a Dandelion Root supplement (Link) to help
get rid of some excess water. Dandelion Root is a natural diuretic that
a lot of body builders will use to shed excess water before
competitions. This stuff should be used as the last little push to get
your face as lean as possible. Make sure you drink plenty of water
while you take this stuff so you don’t become dehydrated.
5. Jaw Positioning & Breathing This idea comes from the work of orthodontist Dr. Mike Mew. Dr. Mew
has done extensive work in the areas of facial development. Dr. Mew
states that due to our soft diet, and poor tongue positioning, our
jawlines are “sinking”. Our faces are becoming longer and the centers
of our face are not protruding prominently forward as our ancestor’s
faces were. His work is very fascinating and I encourage you to take
a look at it in order to form your own opinions.
One of the reasons our faces are sinking, he points out, is that a large
portion of our population are “mouth breathers” that is, as we go
about our lives and especially when we sleep, we tend to keep our
mouths slightly open to breathe. When this happens, our tongue and
Pivotimage.com|PatrickKenger 11
lower jaw no longer provide support to the roof of our mouth, also
called the palate. This can cause elongation of the face and a
receded maxilla, the upper jawbone of the face. The maxilla provides
structure and support for the mid-face and can have a profound effect
on overall facial handsomeness. So how do you fix this?
You need to breathe through your nose instead of your
mouth and keep your tongue pressed up against the
roof of your mouth with your teeth nearly touching.
This is the natural resting position your tongue should be in at all
times unless speaking or eating. I noticed that after chewing Mastic
gum for a couple weeks, my mouth tended to default to this natural
closed position. It still took conscious effort now and again, but it was
much easier once those jaw muscles were strong enough to regularly
support this action.
Here’s a great article (Link) and a dramatized graphic about the
negative effects of mouth breathing…

6. Get a Haircut Your hairstyle is a huge factor in how your face shape appears. You
can do a lot with your hair in order to frame your features better. In
order to better accentuate your jawline and cheekbones, you want to
take the bulk out of the sides of your hair. Getting rid of the length on
the sides and keeping them nice and tight will create a squarer
appearance to your whole face.
The goal is to make your face appear leaner, and get rid of the
excess bulk around your cheekbones to create a clean, streamlined,
masculine look.
You want to keep some length on the top and wear it up preferably.
This will make your face appear longer and lean it out.
Next you want to have the sides trimmed close to your face. I usually
have my hair cut between a 1-3 depending on the length of my hair
on the top of my head. Just ask your barber or stylist for a squarer
haircut. Here are some examples…
14
This style of cut will put your
mug’s angles in the spotlight
and make you appear much
leaner than you actually might
be.

7. Trim Your Facial Hair Correctly I always tell my clients: facial hair is to men, what makeup is to
women. Having a little stubble or even a full beard can really create
the illusion of masculine jawline and prominent chin.
First, you need to grow some facial hair. Light stubble will do just fine,
but keep in mind that the most attractive amount of facial hair to
women is somewhere around 8 days of growth, or what is considered
“heavy stubble”). A little stubble also helps add an element of
masculinity to your face. Just as breasts are feminine, facial hair is
masculine. It signals you have good levels of testosterone flowing
around your body.
Next, you need shave away all the hair below your neckline. Anything
below your Adam’s apple needs to go.
Now you’ll want to get precise. Follow along the natural curve and
angle of your jawline and remove all the hair below it. Take a look at
some examples of what this looks like…
16
Now that you have your neck and jawline cleaned up, you need to
add volume within your facial hair where its needed, and take away
bulk where its not. Take a look at both Ryan Gosling and Justin
Timberlake with some facial hair…
Notice how keeping bulk around the chin area really adds to the lower
half of the jaw and creates a masculine chin.
Pivotimage.com|PatrickKenger 17
Our goal is to add volume around the lower area to create a more
masculine chin. Everything around the sides of your jaw near your
ears should be kept short to keep that square appearance.
When you trim you facial hair, trim all over evenly. Then trim the sides
near your ears short, and work your way down to your chin, trimming
your lower jaw a little longer than the sides, then finally ending around
your chin, keeping that area the longest.
Here’s an example that works with men with about a week to two
weeks of stubble:
• Trim all facial hair using a 3 guard
• Now trim up around the sideburn area near your ears using a 1
guard
• Work down around your lower jaw near the masseter and lower
cheeks, trimming this with a 2 guard.
• Finally trim again around your chin, blending this area with a 3
guard.
This is just an example so use different guards to achieve the look you
want. I use a few different electric razors but I like this Remington (Link) the
best. The reviews on this thing are amazing. I’m trying out new razors all
the time but so far I’m very happy with this one.
18
So there you have it gentlemen. These steps have helped me achieve a
much better jawline than I thought possible. A well-structured, masculine
jawline is one of the most important elements of a handsome face. With
these tips, you’ll be well on your way to having the attractive face you want!
