● Be realistic (do not put skills you do not actually have)

● Customize the CV based on the position/company you are applying to

● Review your CV, maybe involve someone else as well

How to build a successful profile

● Use the profile builder tool

● Select the basic, free profile

● Use the summary section to give an overview of what your degree and skills.

● In the summary, focus on what type of position you are looking for – be flexible.

● For your specialties, list only those technologies you consider yourself well versed in.

● List your positions and briefly explain your responsibilities; provide examples of achievements

● Limit positions to jobs related to your field of interest; no need to include retail or restaurant work

● Include your educational information; you can make many connections through former classmates.

● Start with fellow students and alumni and build from there

● Gain credibility for yourself

● Only ask people who can truly speak about your work or studies to be a recommendation

● If possible, get 1-2 recommendations for each position you have held or project you have participated in

● You can choose to accept or reject a recommendation from someone

● Offer to write a recommendation for someone you know well.

Privacy Settings

● You can adjust your privacy settings by clicking on “setting” in the top right hand corner, under your name.

● You can hide your connections from view by other users.

● You can select the types of messages or invitations you are willing to receive.

● You can choose a setting which will not let users know if you have viewed their profile. The down side to this is that you can’t see who viewed your profile.

● You can manage your preferences for advertising.
